guys, my first new thread i've decided to conduct.

don't get me wrong i loved the win on the weekend. it was great to see the form that we were displaying against a very disappointing port adelaide team.

but the old sayings that we are told when we are young so often are true and this is needed to be said.

BAD KICKING IS BAD FOOTBALL.

i was working on the weekend and heard some, but not all of the game. but to hear at one stage, 4.7, 8.16 and then 12.22 by three quarter time is terrible in a way.

is the problem the shots we were taking, ie. difficulty.
is the problem mental?
is the problem physical? technique.

long story short, we need to be better in front of the big sticks in order to become a better team. and make other sides be punished even more.

how do we get this polish factor?
thoughts please.

The "polish factor" is exactly what we're missing.

With so many young players, we often lack composure at key moments. Examples include when one of our young guns gets the ball, sprints away at full pace, and then utterly sprays the kick, or our many talented players who are lousy set shots for goal.

I think a lot of that will come from pure game-time and experience, and you can see it happening.

Look at a guy like Grigg and the difference in his play from even just the start of this season - he looks far less like a deer in the headlights, runs in fewer circles and launches less clangers off his hoof than just ~4 months ago.

This sort of improvement is happening all across the side, in young players like Grigg, Armfield, Jamison, Bower (before he was hurt), and even some more experienced players who appear to be finding a better rhythm in their game, like Wiggins, Walker and Waite.

Even guns like Murphy and Gibbs have plenty of room for more composure and class and development, and it's happening before our eyes.

Exactly, it will happen with time.

No doubt our skills from last year have increased a lot, and hopefully Ratts works on this again over the summer.

Think back to Hawthorn two years ago, and they were probably where we are now....it will come :thumbsu:

The polish will come I have no doubt, as guys like Murphy are too skillful to not get their kicking right. It's pretty obvious that the areas in which we need to improve, and i'm hoping that Ratts and co will work on this over the Summer.

These points might depend on the individual -

For Instance Fev missed 4 shots from the pocket on his non preferred side for a right footer, all missed narrowly to the right i think, but he has no problem with technique or mental pressure, so my thoughts are - Dont lead to that pocket in the first place if you can help it, this might be a planning/structure problem, also think Fev was a bit anxious all day and was bursting for a big day which suggested that he was more focussed on the Coleman race instead of winning.

Brad Fisher - Definately technique issues along with mental pressure and low confidence, needs work in all of those areas.

Kade Simpson - Technique issue (has too much of the Buddy/left footers arc, even on the run) and he doesnt steady when on the run and therefore is executing poor technique at too fast a pace, needs to learn to slow down and straighten up.

Andrew Walker - Technique is a little worry but like Simpson he generally is running too fast at the point of kicking, but has shown a little improvement the last 2 weeks.

Eddie Betts - Tries to kick the amazing goal at times too often, gets a little bit like Milne at times and panics into unnecessary situations at times by outsmarting himself or trying to be too clever which makes him look indecisive and not play on instincts.

Cameron Cloke - Tries to kick the bladder out of the ball too often.

Marc Murphy - technique issues, needs to run straight at goals and not kick across his body.

Heath Scotland - Again another who tries to be too clever at times for his own good. Needs to thump the ball through goal post high and stop trying to look for shorter options which are not on when he runs to or inside 50, He has been very frustrating the last 2 games with indecision and not just thumping the ball through, even had 1 touched on the line Saturday from 45 out on the run.

Jordan Russell - Definately has confidence and technique issues, doesnt run straight at the goals and guides the ball too much instead of thumping it through with some penetration.

Just a few thoughts.:thumbsu:

Yes your right. It cost us the game against adelaide. 6 Straight behinds in the last term. I think its composure. Slow down ya pace a touch get ya balance right and kick. Steaming in flat out and bombing is rubbish football. Also set shots......go back give yaself plenty of room and kick through the ball....dont stab at it or kick the leather off it.

Straight kicking wins games.:thumbsu:

Agree very good assessment.

Jordan Russel and Marc Murphy both have huge confidence issues in front of goal. Brad Fisher just cant kick

If its the polish factor we are missing, maybe we should go for David Wojinski at seasons end

Here's a little polish factor:

:)

If we kick like we did on the weekend we will lose games. As the team gets better though, so will our kicking, both field and goal kicking. Considering this is your first thread, you've done quite well.:thumbsu:
