Technically, sex is sex but it has an emotional element so I wouldn't dismiss it as just harmless fun. Extramarital sex is a dangerous game.

The illegality of SSM, polygamy etc. is the reason people aren't just having ceremonies and calling themselves 'married' now.

Not much point being 'married' to 17 wives when 16 of them aren't recognised as next of kin etc. Better off just getting a silk robe and a mansion.

Another human invention - the law. Things like property law, child custody etc. Two people can share those rights but the other half a dozen wives or husbands would be screwed over.
