Is it just me or does he never seem to get runs when we need them?

I always see him batting the shit out of the ball when we're 200 in front on a flat deck at home, but when the team needs a captain's knock he's nowhere to be seen.

The Ashes were probably another example of that.

Michael Clarke, Hussey, Watson, North . . . all these guys stood up. Ponting fell by the wayside.

Thoughts?

No.

05 Ashes, countless others. The knock at Trent Bridge (I think) was one of the greatest innings by an Australian. He's been out of form in recent years, but still turns it on at the start of the series to set the tone.

He's past his best there's no doubts about that, but when he was at his best, he's in the best all time Aussie XI.

So no, there is no way in hell he is overrated.

I agree there have been times when he's gotten important runs, but for the most part he's been a flat track bully imo.

I've welcome the times when he got vital runs for Australia, and applauded him for it. Too often though he's amassing huge totals against poor teams.

Just my opinion.

He's comfortably in the best all time Aussie XI if he retires tomorrow.

He's certainly the best Australian batsman I have ever seen (been watching since the mid 70's).

Outside the fact there are barely any decent bowlers in cricket and he's had a team of a grade batsmen supporting him (hayden, langer, waugh, waugh, glichrist) he's clearly in the top echeleon of batsmen in the last 20 years.

Lara and Tendukar aside, who are absolute elite class and by far the best bastmen we've seen in a very long time, there are a bunch of players who are A GRADE - Ponting and Kallis lead that pack.

Laughable.

You may like the "pretty" batsmen but give me a fighter every single time.

Ponting is more consistent than Lara and averages more than Tendulkar against quality opposition.

What a series load of Bollocks. Batting at 3 he comes to the wicket and dominates an innings and controls it.

Perhaps the concept of never getting when there needed is because they were always bloody got in the first dig to set up many a match from the beggining. Where most matches are won from.

Franky Hodgepodge what you said was a load of BS.

All time great, Punter.

Whilst i do think the attacks were very average from 03/04 onwards, you can only make runs off what your up against.
Has always had a weakness going hard early in his innings, and it seems to be getting exploited more and more especially against the new ball.
If he really wants to play for another 3yrs, no doubt he should drop down to number 5 and he would plunder attacks against the old ball.

Out and out champion.

Also, in the first innings of a series, he sets the tone - can't forget the 196 against England up in Brisbane in 2006, the 150 this year at Cardiff, the century against India in 2008. He is the most important wicket in the team, bar none. When we needed about 500 to win the Ashes this year, when he was there and we were two down, we could have done it (had about 300 to go), I may be deluded but he was the one who I felt could win us the game, thats not disrespecting Hussey, Clarke, North and Haddin. But the moment Ponting was run out, I knew we were gone.

has made the majority of his runs batting at number 3, who was the last batsman to dominate that position like Ponting has?

Tendulkar never batted their, Lara (40 tests) and Kallis (49 tests).

Ponting has played 100 tests batting at number 3 with his average still just over 60.

cut the guy some slack would you

I don't think Ponting is overated but he is well past his best form.:( I think during this year's Ashes series he will call it quits.

He's one of our all-time greats but I don't think he is good as a guy from the 70s like Greg Chappell despite most putting Punter ahead.

its funny cause i know a few people who have watched both play and their criticism of Chappell was also he never made runs under pressure when Australia needed it.

Everybody, including the Poms, knew it.

He's been our best player since Bradman and this is a ridiculously stupid thread when you consider he is after years of brilliance is coming back to the pack.

Some people have very short memories.
