While we all know we have a young and relatively inexperienced squad, last week showed we also have a very inexperienced coaching staff.
A..3 debutant's
B..Astbury at chb
C..Conners as our sub
were all grasp at straw decisions

A..While Conka as a 1st rd draft pick warranted selection, and performed well, Bachelor and Hellbig were at best hit and hope selections, and, while both boys did ok for their first game, neither had any real influence on the game
B..Astbury at chb, is now becoming a concern, not only for the club but for his development, while there is no doubt he is a good prospect with a good football brain and skills, the hype and expectations on him are astonishing.
Drafted as a forward where he couldn't get his hands on the ball, now sent back where he can't get his hand on the ball is a real worry, anyone who believes he could line up on Franklin, Brown, Goodes, and such is delusional, we need to take the pressure off him and let him develop
C.. Conners as a sub was beyond ridiculous, Conners is a wide seagull type player, and while he works hard to get loose, run off and rack up possessions, the last thing he is, is an impact player, does not win contested balls, take contested marks or lay tackles, you would think a sub player has to hit the game head on and have an immediate impact, very much the wrong selection
Carlton's backline was very week, and the game was win able, we let one slip with poor decisions lets hope rd2 is a better coaching effort

fair assessment SPOCK.

Rather than blame our developing kids, I'd like to think there were some critical errors at selection as you point out as well as selecting Axel (which Dimma has admitted was an error).

I'm keen to see our team V the aints and how you assess that.

Ok, looking at our selections who would you have gone with? CHB if not Astbury? who instead of Batchelor and Helbig? I agree there are risks of actually hampering development of young kids by putting them into a contest that they'll most probably lose, the thing is our list lacks experience, so who else could the selection panel choose? The kids have to play, if only to make the senior players challenge for a call up. I'm happy to back them in, Conca, Batchelor and Helbig will be much better for the experience, Astbury is being exposed because Moore's not playing. It's the old debate, development or winning, I think they're trying to do both. Just gotta sit back and enjoy the young guys development at this stage.

The main selection mistake was not including Tuck... which is well documented in another thread.
Helbig and Batchelor both had good pre-seasons and warranted selection and deserve another game. Astbury is a player we need to fast track so he must play also....
Conca looks like he will never play 2's.

The other mistake was Foley... In hindsight he shouldn't of played, but if it is true that he felt fine then the risk was worth it.
Connors as the sub was a bit strange also..... then again who else did we have??

Only poor selection was Foley which was really a medical thing not a selection panel mistake.

Connors was coming off injury and was underdone, hence sub. Astbury played third tall as a developmental role, and deserves to be left a while there. McGuane and Rance took the main posts.

We lost the game because of uncharacteristically poor performances from our midfield for various reasons (Foley - sick) (Deledio - no match fitness) (Cotchin - don't know why, just poor for a half) (Martin - don't know why, just poor - possible second year blues as teams work him out).

Helbig and Batchelor earned their games - we're in the middle of a rebuild here. Blooding youth is very important.

drawing a long bow suggesting any of that is a poor reflection on the club, as spluff says , rookies needed to be introduced at some point, all of those boys had done enough to warrant an inclusion. perhaps a case could be put for tucky...obviously the requirement for cleaner users of the ball is an acute one. Astbury at CHB , poor move, pffftttttt...he needs to settle in a spot and grab it with both hands...give him some time. There's no-one else pushing him out

If we hadn't played Foley then the conspiracy theorists would have been out in force claiming that he was not over the injury and that was the reason he didn't play.

Really a dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

LOL mate you do realise we are trying to develop kids still?
We played terrible for a half and were lucky Carlton played just as bad and kicked so many behinds, or it could of easily been 10 goals, have you had a look at the inside 50 stats? In saying that... It was a good experience for the kids. As dimma has stated many times "it is not about how many games we win this year but about getting games into the kids and watching them develop",

Connors as a sub was a strange decision in my books. If not fit enough for a full game then he shouldn't have been named. Nason or White should be our sub throughout the year.

Foley, why was he selected? FFS the bloke was suffering a gastro virus. He should have been home in bed not running around in such an important game for our club.:thumbsd:

Deledio......... if he shows the same endeavour/interest this week then he should get on the next plane and follow Taylor. He lacked any real go in him and when the side was looking to someone to show some experience early in the last when we were still in front he just faded away.:thumbsd:

Yes, I agree some odd decisions rnd 1. We needed to be competitive and have a real go against our arch enemy and we did take it up to them for 1 qtr. The pressure is now on the coaching group to get the lads to regroup and take on the saints this week.

1 or 2 debutants would of been enough in my book. Tuck should of certainly played and Farmer if he was fit ( I understand that he wasn't) in saying that

Conka and Batchelor were the 2 best debutants I've seen for the Tigers in uken years.

Very surprised with this weeks change Rance out King in. Surely they can't be serious. It should be Rance out Thursty in , Hellbig out King in

Connors not fit shouldnt be rewarded

Exactly Tuck should have played like for like

The selection committee ballsed it up and im not so sure that they fixed it for this week

did you know angus graham is some sort of player so is whitey sheesh all i can say is delusion is grand.
we performed as bad as previous yrs yet the ferals are all happy because the scoreline in a perverse way was closer.
the fools are actually looking at scorelines for improvement and you can bet mpost of the fools are looking at the win loss lrdger as well.

ya know we werent good enough despite the team carlton had. we all knew it before hand.

Terrible post. The only one i agree with you on is the Connors one. Although it is only round 1 and the coaches are still trying to figure out the best way to utilise the sub rule.

Clearly Batchelor and Helbig earnt their spots in the pre season and got the chance to play. Fair enough they didnt have a huge impact on the game but how many first gamers do? They are only going to improve.

Astbury has played 20 games of footy and is still learning the game. I dont think he has done much wrong since moving to CHB. Plus we have no one else at the moment.
