As far as Australia goes, we need a government with nuts (could be ovaries also)
The answer is to tap into the Ord river...tidal power that could supply most of the country's power needs, irrigation for huge increases in food supply.
It will take considerably investment sure but it will create a sustainable future (energy and food) and actually make city folk to relocate to cash in on the spin off businesses etc that it would create.
Just need a government to start the ball rolling and put the plan in place (like a 20 year vision). Investment would then flow and we could have the richest pocket on the planet without a gram of iron ore being moved. Along this path also develop an industrial/manufacturing industry off the tidal power in the NW of WA, where we can make our own steel from our own iron ore, crazy thought I know.
Australia has a massive imbalanced ratio of city: country and you can't blame people moving to the city for education and work. Time for the government to step up and have some forward vision...
