"I always thought the Bombers were making a statement, but if the deal was right they would take it," Lloyd told Nine's The Trade Off.
"I was told today that they wanted a player from Hawthorn. A player who was established, and they didn't get that, so it had to be something significant.
"I don't know how to look at it. I can't sit here and say they did the right thing or not.
"The Bombers aren't going to play finals for a significant period of time. I still think they're a long way off.
"Some would say 'why not take the first rounders and rebuild yourself', but others will say those first rounders, they're not top 10 picks and you'd rather have your best player. That's what the Bombers landed on.
"The gap between Zach and the next best player (at Essendon) is so big. They didn't want to lose their best player, but he's going to take a long time to get over this.
