Crazy thought here, maybe every team should get to play in the opening round of the season.
It seems the blocker to this is the Victorian requirement for Carlton and Richmond to open the season with their now ‘traditional’ skid mark.

Port start the season with a string of Sunday games in the Auskick time slot anyway. We’re not stopping Northern clubs dominating the prime time slots.

It was to compete with eyes on their opening fixture extravaganza

Except that was last week this year, which completely negates the whole point of the ****ing experiment
Last night’s game aside, the stands weren’t exactly overflowing so they’re not even getting bums on seats anymore with nrl starting a week earlier. Has to be the last time.

Nick Daicos said internally Harry Perryman would be BOG for tagging Nas..

Cause cricket and footy don't get along
Footy by the AO legislation, don't get access to AO until 15 March and have control of AO until midnight 7th of October.

The government has to intervene to change that, and both SANFL and AFL and SACA have to agree to any flexibility to allow dates outside those legislated dates.

Big game tonight in woman’s soccer
Iran Vs Philippines, should be a cracker.
????

That was last night. Because those 2 teams are in the same group as Oz and South Korea, the final games in each group are played at the same time to avoid manipulation of stopping/helping a team progress from that group, like we saw at the men's world cup in either 1982 or 1986 WC.

Someone the other day posted about us having 8 All Australian players in the last 6 seasons.

Made me think how do we compare with other teams given so much media and even club debate that Ken never had the squad to win a flag.

Below is who got picked in the final 22. At some point I will get around to do a similar chart for the other 18 and then 22 players who made the 40 man and then 44 man squad.

Given players are only selected for their minor round performances, I've highlighted who finished top 4 every year.

Hey here's a novel idea - how about all 18 teams play in opening round, and we call it round 1? It removes the need for unnecessary byes in the following few rounds.

It would be so easy to fix the opening round issue without even taking away from the QLD/NSW clubs too. Give them the primetime Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday night slots in standalone games. Fit the other games in around those slots. Everybody gets to watch their team play in Round 1, but QLD and NSW still get the special attention we've apparently decided they deserve. Easy, fixed, thanks. Do that next year.

If you are going to have Bullshit Round continue, then;

1 in Rd 1, the 8 or 10 teams that played in Bullshit Round, have to play each other that round, and
2 in Rd 2 have 6 teams have the bye if it was 10 teams in BS Rd, or 4 if it was 8, they then play each other in Rd 3, and
3 in Rd 3 the other 4 teams that played in Bullshit Round get the bye and come Rd 4 those 4 teams play each other.
There is no need to stretch the byes out over 3 rounds when 2 does the job.

That way at least its fairer if the overpaid and underbrained executives at AFL House insist on continuing with Bullshit Round for the almighty $$$ in the northern markets.

Its not that hard if you put the Essendon v Collinwood game first in its ANZAC day slot, the 3 holiday Monday games next, then put Freo 1 week at home or away, and WCE the opposite and rinse and repeat that over the next 23 rounds and then fill in the slots for what I have suggested above.

If you want the "traditional" Carlton v Richmond game the first full round, then neither team plays in Bullshit Round or both teams play in Bullshit Round.

Its not that hard to get this bit right, up front, and then get the computer program to manipulate and other 190 odd minor round games.

Same sort of rules apply when there are the mid season byes. 6 per round not stretch it over 5 rounds, stuff the broadcasters wanting 7 or 8 games per round, not 6 during that period and teams who had a bye, have to play another team who had the bye.

The AFL wanks on about equalisation, but a draw at the start of the year where 1 team played last week and the other team had a bye, isn't equal. And its not much better mid season when they can't get the scheduling balanced and equal then.

One of the most infuriating things about this tin pot comp is the Vics banging on about supposedly iron-clad, unbreakable contracts for dumb shit like the MCG GF, preventing Port wearing the Prison Bars, and locked in blockbuster fixtures.

But then things that actually affect the immediate integrity of the competition, like the FS/Academy bidding process, priority picks etc. are as mutable as the moon.

Sometimes it feels like the whole charade is a red wine fever dream of what the country would look like if Ed McGuire were king.

Carlton and Port Adelaide are bracing to give up a record amount of draft capital to acquire top father-son and academy prospects this year as the AFL fine-tunes measures to increase the number of top-rated players available to clubs that finish near the bottom of the ladder.
Under the system being refined following last Wednesday’s AFL Commission meeting, the amount of points a club has to hand over under the recently revised draft-value index (DVI) is likely to be weighted according to where a club finishes on the ladder.
Clubs will also only be allowed to use two picks to find enough points to match the bid under the complicated bidding system, although the proposed changes have an option for them to go into deficit. The intent is to protect the integrity of the draft, which has moved away from the most talented youngsters being available to the clubs finishing on the bottom rungs of the ladder.
The system will make it extremely difficult for teams that finish high on the ladder to have enough points to secure players who attract bids at the top of the draft – unless they have given up existing talent. The move is an attempt to decrease the likelihood of clubs being able to win a premiership and acquire a top six selection in the next draft.
The Brisbane Lions have done so in the past two seasons when father-son Levi Ashcroft and academy prospect Daniel Annable joined their list after the Lions matched bids at picks five and six respectively. If the proposed weighting had been in place in 2025, the Lions might have had 25 per cent extra in points added to Annable’s price, making it harder for them to match the bid that came for him at pick six. They may have had to therefore trade out a good player to get another high draft pick to have enough points to add him to the list.
