Cheapest country on the Euro, I'd say. Really love Lisbon. Nearby Sintra is a must see too. I missed out on Porto, but apparently it is quite worthwhile. The Algarve is superb too.

Have a few Superbocks for me :thumbsu:

Loved Portugal.
If you like nice beaches and a great party town, don't miss Lagos. Fantastic place to laze around during the day then enjoy some great food at night before checking out the full on nightlife.
Also if you're not one of those that hates meeting other Aussies while overseas, Lagos is jampacked full of travelling Aussies.

Lagos is worth seeing. Its season is pretty short though, don't bother going unless it is between late May and mid September.

a few years ago i travelled lisbon , sintra , up to obidos - fantastic ancient walled town
sao martinho de porto - beautiful harbour - great clams!

portugal is very cheap - ran out of time rather than money

people really friendly and because of their old alliance with england more tolerant of english speakers than other countries

they hate the spanish so don't try speaking spanish to them

The ones that scream Aussie Aussie Aussie as a group down a street?

I don't mind meeting Aussies overseas, they are my country(wo)men, I just cringe at the obnoxious types no matter if I'm in Australia or not.

Those types flock to Lagos unfortunately.

Regarding Portugese Chicken (Nandos style). You can get it at restaurants in touristy areas but Portugese food traditionally is not spicy. Spicy food was introduced by the African population in Portugal but most restaurants/cafes are not owned by Africans and typically serve traditional Portugese food which usually consists of Salted Cod, Chicken with rice and a kind of gravy and stuff like that, but not spicy.

Nandos also isn't spicy.

Don't leave your kids in yuor room on their own.

Like that stupid nurse from England ha ha it's so obvious they should be looked up lol.Imagine that going out to do their sinful crap and leave the kid in the room. I would have gave them 15 years for doing that.

Ill be in Lisbon with the family for New Years and we are hanging around for 4 days (before heading to Barcelona then Morocco). Just thought I would refresh this thread and see who else has been there and any advice??

Looks and sounds like a lovely city and while we wont be out partying till all hours because of the little one (yes believe it or not we aren't leaving her alone in the hotel room :D) we will still be out to see the sights and get into some wine and seafood.

I found the surf beaches around Portugal were great and even in mid-October whilst I was there this year, the weather was still perfect.

The nightlife was a tad quiet in Lagos in October, but was still buzzing in Lisbon. Would imagine it to be fairly busy during the May-September period.

Food and travel was cheap and I found accommodation at hostels to be the best value for money around the Mediterranean.

The only downer for Portugal was sleeping overnight in Lisbon airport. Was bloody uncomfortable with the plastic chairs, but a small price to pay in getting back home from London.

Spent a few weeks in Portugal a few years ago, was probably my favourite country in Europe. Great beaches, great beer (Superbock is one of the best lagers around), great nightlife and very friendly people.

Lisbon is a pretty cool city, there's the old historic areas in the centre of town with little cobblestone streets and newer areas down on the waterfront with trendy bars, restuarants and nightclubs. From memory there's also a tram you can take up to an old fort/castle on top of this big hill which gives you a great view of the city.

Not sure if you have the chance to go elsewhere but Lagos on the Algarve is definitely worth checking out, especially in summer. The nightlife there is awesome, with some great bars and nightclubs and there's a number of great beaches nearby too. Probably more of a place for young singles though than families, as it tends to be a magnet for the drunken Aussie/Kiwi/English yobbo element.

I'm travelling to the U.K in November and was wondering what steps I needed to take in applying for a Portuguese passport.

I researched on the internet for the last hour or so, but their's a frustrating lack of information.

My Grandpa was born in Portugal and his only decent is Portuguese. My dad was not born in Portugal but lived there for over 10 years. I was wondering if anyone knew if I was eligible for it and what documentation I needed?

Regards.
