You know the drill.

+
  • Naitanui, the complete game - did he step up as a leader without Cox?
  • McGovern - a marking forward, what's that about?
  • Wellingham's job for first 3 quarters on Ablett (scooter who?), plus hurt him going the other way
  • Kennedy's first half
  • Lycett - strong mark, decent taps
  • Gaff - showing more guts, backed into a pack for a mark
  • Hurn - marshalled the press and took mark after mark
  • Bennell - bargain of the year
  • winning a close one
-
  • Our fitness staff - whatever we were doing pre-season, don't do it again
  • Darling - not sure what his role is now
Agree with all that. Also sheppard dat shep.
They have the last 2 minutes on the afl website the sheer desperation is nice to see, Schofield going head in at the goal square was lovely.
Also Hutchings proving he has talent people are a little harsh give him a chance.

I really like Simmo. Once he settles he's going to be a very good coach
I think you are on the money there.
We tend to forget that he is playing a learning game also.
He strikes me as an intelligent, clear thinking person.
I think that an inner strength lurks beneath the measured exterior.
Thumbs up.

NN easing back in....like a train!
Mcgovern down front and the King in the guts and whatever else he was doing? seems a good tactic, maybe they could rotate -seem same build?
Kennedy back finally, minus the twinkletoes too...and a smother-blanket. keeps him in touch.
Yeo - cant believe this guys misfortune, now a broken hand? we need him.
Bennell,Ellis.. a cut above at times.
Swellingham did a days work, kicked his flashy goal...is he a primadonna, time will tell.
Gaff was visible today, did some unusual for Gaff things that were good - marking!
saw some good pinpoint kicking, including priddis..
(also saw a couple of standard straight up and down rainmakers from priddis...how did he learn to kick like that? its an amazing trick.everyones looking around for where the ball went, and it lands 2 metres away..cracks me up.)
did Hutch actually look a bit classy today?
Lecca seemed...quiet.
a win is a win...the last i heard thats a good thing. 4 points.

negatives= we didnt lose.
Yeo.
bad sound and vision at sportsbar..so left thinking we're ahead by about 6 goals, probably get reduced to a 3-4 goal win, so i missed the heart attack ending..thats a positive!

A big positive for me is the prospect that this close win could be the turning point in our season.
GC got closer than they should have but we weathered that storm and that is the big win for me.
All the leadership group stood up in the absence of Glass.

Masten's everything.

Seriously - that easy goal Charlie Dixon got in the second quarter was classic Masten. Gave a piss-weak, half-hearted effort. All he had to do was punch it through for a rushed behind from 2m out and his limp wrists couldn't even make it that far. No wonder he kills it in pre-season, the games don't mean a thing. If the West Coast Eagles were the Wizard of Oz... he'd be our Tin Man for sure.
Are you actually serious?

You need to watch it again and see what happened - he was doing the exact right thing and the ball took the most erratic bounce and went over his head - seriously watch it again.

There's lots of things you can criticise Masten for, he has become a very outside player when we have the ball (to the point where Simpson doesn't even start him in the middle when Selwood and Shuey are out) and there were some contests today where he got pushed off a bit easy, but he can kick the footy. Every time in the open he hits a target, and can actually vary his kicks dependent on the situation. We've only got only 2 or 3 that can do that.

He's playing as a high HFF again, but he has the run to go right back to defence.

Think he is doing the exact job asked of him ATM.

A WIN!! OMFG

Positives:
NN, absolute beast mode. Hopefully back to full fitness.
JK accurate again. Would be good not to only do it against the expansion clubs though.
Some new bloke, McSomething did pretty well.
Sheppard was impressive, that bullet pass to JK sticks in my mind.
Beating a side above us.

Negatives:
Yeo No teeth and a broken hand.
Almost blowing a 39 point lead.

Positives; All our bigs look good, apart from the woeful Darling. He even got a run in the midfield today and spudded that up royally.

Negatives; hardly breaking news, but our midfield just makes me want to punch something. VERY nearly replicated the epic Carlton choke. When the going gets tough Masten/Gaff/Hutchings/Rosa go missing. At least Wellingham earned his money today. Taking hack Selwood's place was a blessing in disguise.

Nup, he short stepped that incident instead of attacking it and running the risk of getting dirt in his hair. Bloke is dead to me. Trade bait or at most a depth player from next season onwards.

injuries - yeo, butler, hopefully shuey and scoot are fit soon.
that collapse - looked like a fitness issue to me. too loose, intensity dropped.
too much bombing it in during the second half. i thought the quality of our entries was like day and night between first and second half. got worse as we got tired, we stopped lowering our eyes and started with the Hail Mary crap. much more patient and precise in the early going.
heaps of yelling at the telly. the cat's still in hiding.

+ives

beautiful first half. good to see the boys playing with some passion. it was a team effort to keep ablett under control. jk looked a certainty for another 10+ bag.
overall, not too many passengers. masten was poor-ish i thought.
lycett, mcgovern look like keepers. dunno what to do about cox next week.
i bagged him last week so should acknowledge a much better game from hutchings. much better use of the ball, even if looks slow out there.
darling didn't see a lot of it but always works hard to influence contests. he'll be alright.
hurn had a couple of uncustomary turnovers but was strong in the air and all over the ground all day.
schofield played his best game in a while, without starring. looking more confident though and is impressive when he takes the game on.
nicnat. that was a memorable 100th. hope he strings a few more like that together to remind us all how important he is and how good he can be.

Impressed with Bennell and Sheppard in the backline this year.
McGoverns impact.
Naitanui proving the haters wrong
Wellingham made use of his call up

-
Masten quiet again. Personally think he should be dropped.
Darling is a bit lost at the moment but will come back
2nd all of the above. Sheppards improvement is extremely promising - just want to see this type of game against the big boys & I'll be convinced that I was wrong about him.

Also would add Mckenzies decision making in regards to disposal at times, seems to overrate the depth of his kick too often.

Overall I was disappointed by Masten's game. As a number of other posters have mentioned, he seems to look for the cheap 15-20m sideways kick possession too much. Being at the game and sitting quite high up, I noticed that he doesn't seem to use his gut-running to advantage enough. He covers the ground well, and works well back in defence, but doesn't do that searching full-speed 100m sprint to really burn off an opponent and gather possession. One play that really stood out for me was late in the second quarter when he sprinted from one wing to the other (fat side), and hence received an easy ball in space as his opponent was trailing well behind. This allowed him to play on and use his precise kicking skills to set up a mark inside 50 in the pocket, from which a goal was scored (think it was Lecras). Wish he could pull off plays like this more often.

Don't know what game you were watching but Hutchings was one of the guys tackling everything in sight in that last quarter, making sure there was pressure. Rosa and Gaff were also working hard in the packs trying to win the ball. We lost two of our mid rotations due to broken hands etc, so we were bound to start to slow down. I agree about Selwood as he doesn't deserve to be best 22.

We had a few starting midfielders out so I'm not surprised they got back in it.

Most of the positives/negatives have been mentioned so far, but will add a few...

1) Butler actually played ok as a sub. I don't think we have had any sub come on and be any good this year, so that was good.
2) Some young guys stood up really late in the game with some big marks. Almost a passing of the batten from Cox.
3) 7 goals from Kennedy was obviously good, but what I liked most was his kicking action was A+

Negatives
1) When the commentating team just flat out barracks for one team, it's embarrassing for our code.

Butler did some really good team things that I haven't seen us do much at all this year such as running to put a block on when someone is picking the ball up or he has handballed to them. Such simple things we have yet to do for each other yet.

there were so many positives!

Some things less mentioned

+
Brown two weeks in a row doing a wonderful job on smalls
Wellers as a tagger
8 Contested marks between the new kids on the block, The Gov and Lycett. That's silly good.
Thought hutchings was great and kicked really well today

-
Darlings form is pretty poor (he's still putting in effort though)
Cripps did his job to an extent but 7 possies in two weeks not as the sub is poor
Yeo injury
As good as kennedy was he hasn't taken many contested marks and has gone missing at times
The midfield class of gold coast threatened to blow us away (abblett, prestia, swallow, O'meara, Bennell) they all lifted and we didn't really know how to respond.

simpson can surely no longer deny that our fitness is not up to scratch.

i suppose its arguable that our fitness is on par with other teams, but because we carry so many players with poor skills, our skill levels drop WAY off late in games allowing opposition to make up ground on us.

probably a combination of both.

I'm not so sure. I'm not surprised we got over run against gold coast with two mid fielders going out late, us losing a midfielder to injury during the game and then Butler getting injured so we were down a rotation. Gold Coast also have good run. We have won 8 first quarters, 7 second quarters, 6 third quarters and 6 fourth quarters, so it's not drastic. And are skills are shit most of the time against good teams, not just in the last.

I think it's more the fact we don't have a good midfield, we have a slow midfield and it's not really a fitness thing. You can't train explosiveness.

NN playing 4 quarters of good football
McGovern and his marking
Wellingham being used in a role he played at the Pies, the sort of tagger you won't, can hurt his opponent when he has the ball.
Brown locking down players each week.
Simpson being prepared to try different players in different positions
We won
Hurn and Bennell's marking under pressure in the backline.

-
Cripps 8 possies and 2 tackles in two games is ordinary.
McKenzie's kicking
Yeo's injury.
Last quarter fade out's.
