It's usually around this time when we are in the pits of despair that some numpty produces a positives thread to try and stoke a bit of happiness

Well here is the thread (and the numpty)

The year is finished , most think it's another wasted year down the chute, but there are always some positives;

Ridley: blossomed into a gun player, intercepter, distributor, competitor. Most of us knew he could play but this development so quick was still a surprise. We have a ten year gun on our hands

Draper: what he's doing as a rookie ruck off a knee reco is astounding, this guy could be a top 3 ruck in the league guy and very soon, another ten year player sewn up in a generally problematic position

High draft pick: we have a good look at the top end of the draft this year and by law dodo can't trade it off

McGrath: blossomed into a hard running midfielder, still not the finished article but a positive none the less. Next captain no doubt.

Langford: it took time but he's found his niche, a smooth moving wingman who has time in traffic, is strong in the air and can impact forward, a unique player and a positive this year

Ok now it's getting tough...

I'm hesitant but I think Stewart's return has been a positive, especially in light of his effort last night as a back, keen to see him off a full PS. Seems to attack the ball in the air and take grabs more than he ever used to

Lastly I think us curling our toes up so quickly this year is probably the main positive.... Stay with me, if anything forces change its putrid performance. If we'd snuck finals of played well for mid table absolutely nothing changes, least now the big hitters might agitate for decent worthwhile change from Inside out, new coach, fresh start.. let's see if the club takes the lead. If a % of 79 dosent point to flawed club (onfield at least) nothing will.

Ok fellow board dwellers, any positives from the year at your end? Or was it a total doom and gloom waste of time this year..

None of what i say here was enough to the lift the side to get close to finals, so i'd say even with these positives it wasn't collectively consistent enough over full games to give us any sort of edge. Though i blame that mores on our senior group and their lack of form.

Hibberd, has a lot of potential, good to see him getting games.
Clarke, needs some time, but clearly has a heap of upside.
Snelling & Guelfi, both play with a lot of desperation and want to win possession.
Ham, very quick and was great on the wings and half forward, improved his game.
Draper, very natural player, enjoys competing and does it very well.
Stewart, found some form at the end of the season.
McGrath, very good all season.
Shiel, if he can improve his poise with the ball, can play better.
Townsend, i like his work ethic, and he has premiership experience. Upside.
Parish, a naturally good midfielder and can kick goals.
Mosquito, when he's fit, poised, kicks goals.
Ridley, A grade!
Saad, solid and confident player.
Redman, up and down season, but can play.
Lavarde, was hitting his stride before injury.
Merrett, gets a lot of ball, just needs to improve marking and forward entries.
Langford, much more comfortable with the ball.

Daniher looks like he has recovered from the injury. His kicking may still be shit but doesn't look to have lost his athleticism or leap. Should at least get a decent pick if he goes.

Top 5 in no particular order.

Draper looks like he will be a ruck version of Aaron Hamill. Stewart looks like he will fill a KPP spot somewhere. McGrath is trending in the right direction. Ridley. Big changes looking imminent.

Dodoro has been sacked.

Nah just joking, he’s been given another 20 years to build an unbalanced list and draft back flankers

McGrath, Langford, Ridley, Mozzie, Ham, Snelling all showing decent improvement on previous season form

Daniher, Stewart, Draper all showing relative success coming back from injury

And most of all, the ability to post this meme again:

Asterisk season over, hopefully never to return. I found the season difficult to follow, at times not even knowing what round we were uo to when the compressed rounds started. Hopefully 16 minute quarters are done with as well.

Really pleased with progression from Ridley, McGrath, Draper, Mosquito, Langford and Parish. Great to see Daniher, Stewart and Heppell back on ground.

Draper could be a top 5 afl ruckman.
ridley great season.
mcgrath took a step forward- I would make him captain next year.
langford had a greater effect on games unfortunately not as a big bodied inside mid.
adam saad should win our best and fairest.
stewart and Laverde showed enough to retain I reckon.
the biggest positive is what we should have learnt from this season. The remaining peptide generation need to be moved on as quickly as possible. They are simply not winners.
bellchambers and zaharakis delisted
hooker and Heppell should be kept around for a transition year.
hurley should be offered for trade. you won’t get much for him but you will get salary came relief and time to move on. Hurley deserves a chance to go to a good team who are in the window.
the other positive is we should know who are no chance to be winners at our club moving forward.
daniher should have been traded Last year and must be traded this year- if you could swap him for papley you would do it in a heart beat. He can’t kick and he has no hunger to his game. Imagine what roger Merrett would have done to him at training back in the day!
martin Gleeson has played 80odd games.he has put on no size and cannot defend one on one. Time to go and make a tough call. Interestingly no one has mentioned him though he is an unrestricted free agent.
i would seriously look at trading Zac Merrett. He has currency because he can win the ball but hurt factor with his disposal and pressure on the opposition is minimal. He is not going to change. The power traded chad wingard and got some youth into their side and made a clear statement about one way players.
you cannot afford to have players like snelling, hibberd cutler your list let alone getting games. They are this generations Ben Haynes, Marc bullen And ricky Dyson. List cloggers going nowhere.
it is time to invest in youth and aim to be competitive in 2024.
that sort of strategic planning I would view as a big positive!

Looking forward to a backline with Ambrose (only just turned 29) Hurley (only just turned 30) leading out defence next year.

McGrath, Ridley, Draper huge positives this season as has improvement in Langford.

The prospect of fully for Joe is massive

The way we clawed victories over Collingwood and Hawthorn. Each game implementing the game plan this season was like a yank of the pull cord. Mostly we'd splutter out, but when the motor got going...

It's what's kept me from complete resignation.

Oh yeah, and Richmond having to cheat to beat us. Staging pricks.

We have consciously elected not to have more positives this year.

Crauford could have feasibly played 6 weeks ago, Bryan and Jones probably more recently but Bryan as a more athletic second ruck against Port would have been fine, is going to play a lot of footy with Draper and there’s no time like the present.

Clarke has sort of found a groove but he already had a groove last year as a tagger. Francis hung out to dry with a couple of huge assignments he’s not necessarily suited for and in and out. Mosquito seemingly held back because Dreamtime was a good story.

Hibberd not really given a good crack at cementing himself in position. Nothing necessarily bad would have happened if we gave McQuillan and McBride a run.

Seeing all that would have made poor results more palatable.

This was my premise of the weekends game. We had 9 guys under 50 games versus port and of those, only 1 could be considered a winner (Ridley) on the day.

Sure, some have credits in the bank (Draper, Snelling 50:50, Ham 50:50) but to top it off, of the 9, most are older than a first/second year player, that's the most disheartening thing

And given who those 9 were, the fact that we didn’t have many strong winners there is completely fine.

Over the course of the year I would have liked to see more of Ham, Mosquito and Cahill instead of Zaharakis and more of Bryan and Crauford instead of McKernan.

Great idea to try Stewart in the backline but capitalise on the opportunity ffs, I’m not making that move to shoehorn Phillips into the team, I’m doing it to give Jones a run.

Rumour has it from blitz that truck is challenging the older players.

Line in the sand moment hopefully. Some players don’t want to play his game plan.

Those aren’t massive positives I don’t reckon

When given a chance, most of the younger guys have shown little to suggest they are 100+ game players let alone if they become star players.
