Got both tips wrong tonight by a total of 6 points :( Was agonizing over those two games right up until Thursday.

But if the footy's going to stay at this kind of quality, what does it matter if you get a few tips wrong? I still think the AFL made a big mistake having GWS/Sydney as a standalone game in Week 1. Pretty much all the other games have been of a much higher quality.

I think they had to do it as part of the marketing strategy.

Just streamed the game and watched it (am overseas). What an absolutely ripping contest. Plenty of great contests and a few moments of individual brilliance.

Freo looked sensational, few things that really stood out as positives:
- they looked really strong around the contest. Not only did they put their head over the ball but as a team they looked really fierce. As the young kids have grown up and filled out and with a few kids with some mongrel theyre looking like a really physically hard team;
- the over head marking they seem to be really strong all over the ground. Seem to have a lot of players around 190cm and shorter which are good overhead marks and that gave them a real strength in the air
- the midfield was really courageous particularly without Mundy, Barlow not playing a full game and Morabito still to come in. Geez if those 3 can get fit (particularly the first 2) and play full games there will be even more improvement. You boys should be salivating at that prospect;
-the performance of some of the mid tier players like Ibbotson, Duffield, Michael Johnson, Mellington, Zac Clarke, Mzungu, Crowley. I dont think Pav and Hill played their best footy but these guys really stood up. I think Ross is renowned for getting the best out of the so called Non A grade players but I reckon he has a lot more to work with here than at the Saints;
- Fyfe, one word: star.

I know its only round 1 but with Mundy, Barlow (full game), Morabito, Silvagni, Jack Anthony waiting in the wings plenty to be excited about for you blokes.

1. Contested marking - especially Sandilands, Fyfe, Clarke, Mcpharlin, and De boer.

2. Cleaner clearances - spread seem organised and less kick in hope. Will improve.

3. Ruck compo - Sandilands and Clark worked well. Clarke contesting alot of marks and bring the ball down. Sandilands dominating the air.

4. Forward line pressure - Mayne, Clark, De Boer, and Mellington all great chasers.

5. Kick outs - mainly due to our contesting marking.

Like a few others, just wanted to register my pleasant surprise with MJ's effort.

But also wanted to say that I really liked De Boer's overhead efforts. He has often been good, but last night, managed to stick a number of marks that I thought he had no hope of plucking.

Bit Hase/Bartell-esque.
Am I being too kind?

Looking forward to SNOS returning.

I was very pleased with our one-touch handballing and player positioning behind the ball in contested situations and stoppages. Stone and Lyon should be proud.

Middle-tier playing their best collective game ever, seriously I've been a massive critic of some of these guys before but I don't think Ibbotson, Johnson, Duffield and Mzungu have ever played this well in the same game before.

Johnson in particular was MASSIVE and I don't like him one bit.

This was critical... Spot on :thumbsu:

1. Toughing out a match against the league experts of toughing out matches

2. Not being too reliant on our veterans (although Sandi was massive in the first 15 mins)

3. Good performances from some youngies (Fyfe (better than good), Zac C, do Boer, Mellington)

4. Apparently good performances in the WAFL from a few (van Berlo, Griffen, Roberton)

5. Some more to become match ready in the next 2-3 weeks and create pressure for spots (Mundy, Silvagni, Lower, Anthony, Groves)

May I add;

A great game of footy-lot's of yelling at the tv in Kaatman's house.
Fyfe is a star
Really pleased to see Barlow back playing footy
I think the Cats will be ok this year.
Great win by Freo- (tip's hat)

Thanks Kaatman. I have a soft spot for the Cats - I supported them before Freo came along.
Could have been a different result though if a couple of your boys had kicked truer. Pods and Hawkins missed a few very gettable goals.

Yes Johhnomac- Dont forget Stokes ! (and Selwood)

But it's like golf-you have to hole the putts.

Pavlich 's effort was like a chip in.

On Deboer really suprised by his marking
couple of times i thought it was Fyfe until i looked around ground an saw the real Fyfe elsewhere.

With the hair he looks abit like Fyfe from a distance
Get a freaking haircut Fyfe :P

1. Pressure
2. Contested possession
3. A more team orientated effort.
4. Players to come in
5. I recorded it, so can watch it again!

You couldn't of asked for a better first game. Great preparation for next week. One real positive was the great effort over four quarters in an ultra high pressure, competitive game. Under Ross I reckon we might finally be able to thrash a few of the weaker teams instead of narrowly winning.

Dont say that! This is all part of his/my Brownlow plan. Long hair=Easily noticed, by umpires, taking possession in traffic. Fyfe+Brownlow=Ghost Pig bathing in a cold ticklish bath full of Veuve Cliquot.

Fitness
The ability to run back and cover players especially after turnovers was the best i've seen from a Fremantle team. I'm not certain that we were the fitter, faster team out there, but we were definitely not out of our depth. This enabled us to stay in the game all night. The preparation over the preseason will pay huge dividends, we'll give a shake in games where we wouldn't have been able to compete in before, and there'll be a couple of other games where our opponents won't have a chance in hell of keeping up.

Contest
Ferocity and courage all night. There was one spoil in particular from Michael Johnson where he got full body on body contact, I don't remember him doing that before. He was good all night. Matt de Boer's contested marking was a highlight for me, he must have put a lot of work into that over the summer. He was never a slouch but he just kept snaffling them.

Gameplan
The guys knew where to run, and generally knew where their teammates would be. Between this and relatively clean disposal, we saw some of the most fluent and fast play we've had in a long time. Quick clean hands around packs were boner-inducing.

Matt De Boer's marking was superb! We managed to keep Enright to basically having no impact on the match, was is incredibly rare for him to be shut out.

Totally agree.. Matty De Boar's marking was elite.:thumbsu:

I thought Stephen Hill did some pretty good in and under work which he is not renowed for. He is on path to becoming a complete player.
Let's not underestimate his value in the side in getting the main tagger which frees Fyfe up .

I've said De Boer is overrated on this Board.
I need to eat humble pie! He was awesome, as were a couple of other whipping boys Johnno & Mayne. Both were very good.
Watched a replay today, and the positive is we made a lot of mistakes and we beat the Premiers.

Don't forget Barlow and Mundy once they come back. I fully expect the tag to come off Hill and go to Mundy once he starts carving up.
