Review Post match v Eagles

Possibly the best thing out of tonight's effort is that we can potentially strengthen our team so much in the coming weeks with the likes of Steven, Fisher, Schneider, Lee and Billings. That said, Gilbo and Hickey are injury concerns. We do have options for both though in Roberton, Simpkin, Bruce and also Longer.

I thought we had a real crack. For me Dunstan our best. A real 4 quarter effort by him. I thought our back line was solid considering the size difference. Gwilt, Dempster, Dealaney, Wright and Webster all solid.

The Eagles kept Roo, Joey and Ray quiet in the second half which changed the game. Hickey looked sore and was monstered in the ruck. I thought Stanley looked a bit better contesting against Nic Nat and Cox.

Gilbert will miss injured and unless Hickey has a very good week on the track I'd bring in Longer for him giving him a rest. savage looked alright in the first half but made a few mistakes in the last. He's on this ice.

Very pleased with the boys but we need to get some games into a few more players. I'm of the opinion that Lee needs some faith and some game time. Billings looks like he's earned a recall as well. Savage, we need to give him at least 1 full game to either settle down or give him a break from the team to re-capture his confidence. Longer needs to be included, not necessarily at the expense of Hickey (who looks like he might use a rest) but he needs some game time.

I asked this in a previous thread; is White likely to see any action this season?

The bad:
Certainly dropped off in the intensity and confidence in the final. Too many bombs resulsting in turnovers and tackles that didnt stick etc.. this mostly coming down to fatigue from young bodies, a warm night and a long ground.

Jones still has the dumbest disposal moments I have ever seen.

Eli's unfortunate straight as a rocket point. Purely a novice thing though and expected at times.

The good:
Great intenstity from everyone for three quarters against a bigger and stronger side.
Dunstan another great game
Eli just has such good skills all round.

Lost by four goals which was what i predicted. Not "Good" but lets be honest about our position in the ladder hierachy.

Go saints!

Couldn't win a damn clearance last year to save ourselves. I think this is the third week running we've come out on top in that stat. Maybe that has a little bit to do with Sir Luke Dunstan (might as well knight him now and save ourselves the trouble later).

I'm really enjoying having a proper defence this year. Just having Delaney in the team takes so much pressure off Dempster who can play a bit more loose. It really hurt having Gilbo go down though, but still reasonably happy with the way our defence has looked this year.

Loved the pressure and intensity in general, but our smalls (Templeton, Jones and Saunders particularly) did a great job applying the pressure in the first half to keep the ball in.

Just overall seeing a lot of improvement from 2013 St Kilda to 2014 St Kilda, despite only being 3 rounds in. Great to see.

Not much to add to yours. Fatigue and lack of class.

Main positive is that we forced them to play the way we wanted them to, which is ultimately what stopped them running away with it earlier in the game.

Delaney's kicking and decision making are just so bad...Clint Jones shanks it pretty bad but he at least seems to be aiming at the right target. I know it's not his job to be a dead-eye but it's definitely a concern. Was pretty great last week but can't be that far ahead of Bruce.

Maister wasn't terrible, but you'd have to think Lee comes in now if he's fit enough.

Savage just has no faith in his own abilities at the moment.

Richo has come out and said White needs to have a good month or so in the VFL first. Might get a look in the latter half of the season (although would want to give a better effort than his Dev Squad performance first). There's no need to rush him, we've got plenty of time.

People are criticising Savage for his game tonight??
He started as sub which is never easy. Managed to get 18 touches, with some being fantastic kicks.
Also put in a great effort in on the wing to create a contest.
I thought he was good this game as he works his way into the season

Didn't white kick five in Dev squad today? That's a pretty good start IMO :thumbsu:
Very bloody happy with the Saints effort V the West Coast Rubber Chickens tonight. That's 3 games for 3 good efforts. Big pat on the back for Richo:thumbsu:

Really REALLY proud of the lads tonight; a great effort after a long travel on a hostile oval against a decent team in good form, with some pretty handy unavailables.

We're going in the right direction.

Delaney was good for mine. Hardly lost a contest, kept Kennedy to 2 goals and a few of Kennedy's opportunities were as a result of turnovers up the ground. His disposal is poor though, he needs to handball more.

Nope. 5 disposals, 1 goal

Composure

Ei thinks ahead and executes.

Wow Dunstan is clean.

Hickey isn't the traditional ruckman and makes good decisions.

Webster has a lovely kick.

(Imagine when billings comes in)

He only had 5 touches mate.
oops my bad. I thought I saw on twitter he kicked 5 goals, but when they said he got 5, it was obviously 'touches' not goals :p:p
That's what happens when you go around to your brothers to watch the footy and have bucket loads of beer then try to read the Sandy stats on a tiny phone screen while you are half cut:D
Still happy with the Saints effort though:thumbsu: You cant cut me down on that one :p
