Pretty poor performance on our part, pendles was sublime. Others showed glimpses throughout but on the whole pretty wasteful. The big positive for me is that again we were able to win ugly and stick at it when it mattered most

Well, I’m watching the game again now with a cool head and keeping a specific eye on the umpiring and I have to agree with Swanny - just finished watching the 1st quarter and umpiring ok so far, a couple of missed HTB calls on Ess, specifically Stringer. Nothing to complain about but noticed the flogs were up and about booing already during the 1st quarter.

So, 2nd quarter ... again nothing much to complain about. Dodgy in the back free against Grundy gifting Guelfi the Bombers their second goal. One high free to Tippa where he fell over and Maynard grabbed him on the shoulder about 30m out from goal missed but that is cancelled out by the dodgy gift to Guelfi earlier in the quarter. The only other miss was the run down on Thomas by Saad but that turnover lead to Stringer’s goal straight after so no cause for complaint there either.

So, that’s 3 quarters with nothing to really complain about for either team.

The booing has distracted us from a very entertaining game that had some valuable lessons.
Callum Brown is on the improve. He is likely to make it.
Phillips should have his detractors silenced by now.
Two goals as a small forward means Thomas did his job, but the arrogant checkside (successful) and the attempts to run around or away from a very fast opponent should penetrate his consciousness. He is not as good as he thinks he is.
Cox is now an established forward pocket and change ruck. It is no longer potential.
Varcoe may not get much of the ball, but he is enormously valuable.
Mihocek is now an established key forward who demands the constant attention of his defender. He gets a lot of the ball if not respected, and drags a good defender with him if he is.
Howe is an outstanding defender, and Moore looks it too. Roughead is solid.
Our midfield has work to do, particularly in the centre square.
Grundy is beyond price.
De Goey is a good full forward, despite his set shot problems.
Stephenson is working back into the form of last year, after a first few weeks where he seemed to believe his own publicity.
Crisp and Langdon, with support from Maynard are very hard to score against, and they look to attack as well.
Hoskin-Elliott is very valuable.

The umpires were awful. They cost us a several of goals, and gave Essendon several. As luck would have it, we didn't goal from the errors in our favour, while Essendon did, but the bad decisions on marks ( Langdon was the worst) cost us, while the around the necks not paid to Tipinwoudi (is this how you spell it?) cost them. The trend in holding the ball decisions is good, but too many are missed, and there sis a subjectivity in the decisions that seems to favour some players over others. The more skilled players seem to get less time (think Treloar and Sidebottom) while the bullockers (think Caddy or Stringer) get more.
The crackdown on players being thumped seems to have been closed out by the chorus from the media.
There have been many comments as if this was an easy game and we should have thrashed them It wasn't. They are very hard and very fast. We had chances to blow them away, but they pressured us out of them. We had to fight tooth and nail for the win, and it was a very meritorious one. At teh end of the game, WE were pressing for another score, not them.

Good approach. I disagree with a few of yours, and have a few of my own to add.

Not convinced Callum Brown will make it yet, and didn't show anything of that sort yesterday in my view.
Phillips' detractors often call out his panic when with ball in hand, and he did nothing to show that he has fixed this area of his game (his main weakess).
J Thomas only kicked one goal, so it was a below par game in my view, but I still have him in my best 22.
Varcoe needs to do more to keep his spot - which I don't think he has when we are at full strength. Can't survive on a handful of tackles and few possessions.
Mihocek is on the right path, but needs to do more also. Was unsighted after quarter time yesterday. Goes missing for too long too often at this point.
De Goey is a good full forward, despite his set shot problems, I agree, but we need him more in the middle where our mids are consistently beaten.
I don't think Stephenson's problem was arrogance as you suggest, more that he became almost too unselfish and was asked to play higher up the ground.

The biggest issue with our game yesterday in my view was that our handballs kept just missing our targets. So often clean in this area (and that has been what has got us to win games) we were off in that regard yesterday, and therefore couldn't start chains that resulted in goals.
Second biggest issue obvioulsy was set shots. If WHE nails that shot from 30 out on slight angle, then we go to 20 in front late in 3rd quarter with the wind out of their sails, rather than only 9 in front when they zip it up the other end from that kick out with them having genuine belief. Just like the Weagles match, we need to break their hearts when we have the opportunity.

In the last minute or so Pendles was asked about the players stopping when they thought it was a free kick.
Pendles said it was noisy and then said it was pretty funny.

Definitely not disagreeing with you mate. This whole debacle hijacked the real importance of yesterday. I wasn't born in Australia and I do not have any Australian heritage. But I am damn proud and grateful! If we want to talk about respect on Anzac day, how about the fans who get piss drunk and abuse the players/other fans (I've experienced it first hand). How quickly we forget! But I think we're talking about two different issues.

The uproar is about booing star players (Ablett, Pendles, Goodes etc), that's what I was referring to. We are a PC society now. I didn't watch it but heard Mark Robinson said he lost faith in humanity after Pendles got booed. Last Sunday, 300 people died in Sri Lanka. But people have lost faith in humanity because of noise being made in the crowd. Get a grip!

To be fair, Mark Robinson is a monumental tit.

High tackle to Tippa by Grundy on wing not paid, Langdon mark at 10:15 on the def 50m not paid, Stringer caught but not paid and he goes onto kick a point, and let’s not forget the Baguley/Langdon holding each other free that gifts them a goal. Last goal to Daniher courtesy of a Tippa throw not called and then we come to Pendles kneed in the head when reaching down to get the ball - nothing controversial in that. The Stephenson tackle was a 50:50 line ball, umpires hadn’t paid those iffy ones all game so no reason to do so with 1:30 left. The Brown in the back for his last shot on goal was technically there, I would have been filthy if that was paid against us up the other end but that’s footy - you win some, you lose some.

All in all, watching it back in retrospect and in the cold light of day there’s no way it was a horribly biased, umpiring shitshow that the game was made out to be. The standard was on par with the usual and Bombers supporters are just spitting chips they just couldn’t bring it home in a close game. Suck it up, get over it and move on.

We were the better team. We probably weren't the better team for the majority of the match, but we were better across the entire game.

Bombers fans aren't wrong, they are ultimately entitled to have a sook if that's what they want, but the rest of us reserve the right to call it out for what it is: an almighty but mightily amusing dummy spit.

A funny thing happens when teams allow the opposition to get the jump on them; it means they need to spend the rest of the game clawing their way back into the contest, and that inevitably means that their fortunes are more vulnerable to the vagaries of the game, like the small mistakes of their own players or the moments of fortitude from their opponents or the decisions of umpires.

But instead of lamenting the shitfulness of their own mob early on, or the waywardness of them throughout the game, some Essendon supporters decided to focus their angst on the umpires and to 'vent' their bile at an inappropriate moment. That's called a tantrum, and it's f****** pathetic.

The game was good as over when we were 33pts up in the 2nd running all over them. They pinched a couple then Daninher roosted one from 65m on the 1/2 time siren and all of a sudden it's game on. It was the dons accurate set shot kicking that kept them in it. Likewise it was our poor conversion that gave them a sniff.

We showed great maturity to hold firm in the 2nd half when the game wasn't on our terms. Our midfield as a unit still has plenty of growth in it. I'd love to see a fit Wells, even if it's just for this season. He would add so much class to the midfield group. Not sure who he replaces though.

Elliott will replace Brown, who does a lot right in terms of clean hands and is strong in tight. Unfortunately he's not a penetrating kick but he will be decent depth as the season rolls on.

Just quietly, how bloody good is our backline?!

Big few weeks coming up. Power, Blues and Saints. 3 wins really cements a top 4 position. No easy games but we'll go in hot favourites in each of them.

I wouldn’t call it a flop, but he certainly made sure the umpires saw the play in the most favourable possible light for us.

I personally applaud it, ****ing everyone else in the competition does it, if we had a few more players showing a bit of guile at the right times, we could have been the reigning premiers going into this season.
