Just thought I would get a feel for the players we might expect to be around when we have our first pick (most likely to be in 11-15 range).

Draft watchers, who do you think the club will be targeting? Is there a chance of Selwood being available after an injury interrupted year?

I think there are three areas we need to look at:

1) Ruck
Josh has proven to be a capable ruckman, but he will be even better if he can work in a tandem with another one. Richards just doesn't stay healthy, Fanning has gone missing and Cam Cloke's shoulders are a worry.

Sam Jacobs from SA is worth a look. He is 200 cms and 99 kgs and a genuine ruckman who played in the Championships in June.

2) Midfield
Licuria and Burns will retire within in the next 2 years and I think Shaw, the Booch, Davies, Rowe and maybe the rookies can take their spot. Buckley is irreplacable. We really need a tall midfielder with excellent skills and blistering pace.

Selwood would be a good pick, but I'm not sure if he will be available at our first pick. We could look at Daniel Connors who plays for Bendigo Pioneers, Ricky Petterd from QLD, Shaun Grigg from Ballarat

3) Key defender

With Wakelin on his last legs and Jason Cloke's failure to cement a spot (although he played well last week), we need to look at getting a key backman. I think we need a CHB. Presti takes the FF, Clement on the dangerous small forward and Nick Maxwell another tall forward, we need someone to take on the Brown's and Pavlich's of the league. I also prefer T.Clo at CHF.

Therefore we should look at Nathan Brown. He made the AA team at the U18 Championships. He is 194cm, 89kg from the North Ballarat Rebels.
Bit from the Hun:
'Left-footed tall defender, Brown can also go forward. Cool under pressure, he was voted MVP for his state and topped off consistent championship with 20 possessions and six marks in trying conditions.'

bradrowe, any ideas to where these draft prospects will go in the draft.

I'm not an expert but I predict that Selwood would be top 15. Connors, Petterd and Grigg would be froom 15 to 30. Brown will be first round and I'm not sure about Jacobs. Probably mid first round to mid second round.

So your saying unless we trade for picks, we can only get one of them?

-Jack Riewoldt
-Tom Hislop
-Nathan Brown
-Eric McKenzie
-Brock O'Brien

Hey v_v, first congrats on the mod duties. Was wondering if you knew where i could get some footage of the U18 champs, or if you could keep an eye on a couple of others for me. Ive liked some of the stuff ive heard about them.

Bachar Houli and Leigh Adams

Also, there was a mock draft done last nite on the draft board, and Leuenburger fell at pick 11, is this roughly where you think he will drop, i think he would be perfect to fill our ruck stocks, or should we try and get meeson from adelaide ( victorian kid).

Houli is good, but to me, at AFL level he is somewhere between a Mitch Hahn and an Adem Yze-style HFF, which we don't need more of.

Leigh Adams seems to be one of those solid kids, but I don't know much about him.

And I didn't even include Leuenberger on my mock draft because I'm almost positive that he'll be gone before pick #10.

If we got the chance to trade for John Meesen, I'd definitely consider it. However, I don't think we will see him traded, and I don't know that I would give up our first pick in this draft for him at this stage.

It's difficult to say with the draft being so even. We might get one or we might get three. That's just how close it is.

I have faith in our recruiting team though. The last two years has been pretty good.

early days, but assuming we are pick neutral for any Aker/ruckman trades, and that we finish outside the premiership with one more year of window open:

1. pick 1 - playmaker - Proud, Connors, Hislop (slip Selwood?????)
(if none available, best back/forward KPP available - eg Riewoldt? NBrown? or best ruck available - though Leuenberger for us is a loonnng shot and next is not likely to be in rnd 1 calibre yet)

2. pick 2 (assuming we have it) - assuming we got an A grade playmaker above, time for dual spine player (NBrown?, McKenzie,, Jarryd Allen? Reid?? - less likely for the untried and now less fashionable surname of Tarrant,R?). If we clinched our dual KPP in rnd one, rather than playmaker, then we'd at least need a clearance king here (eg Fielding? Urquart? Moss? Hurley? Y. Another?)

3. pick 3. (assuming we have it, and assuming we have above some combination of playmaker/dual KPP/clearance mid), then time for the next best available ruckman after Leuenberger and rnd 2's exits. No idea. Jacobs? Renouf? (likely gone); the big Tipper? X. Another?

4. what a draft - any slipper, utility; so many names to choose from to build a list's potential. If nothing else obvious, then someone to replace/supplement Lockyer and our bleeding on the superquicks in the BP (as opposed to Lock's handling of the mid-cruisers such as Ablett)?
