ICONIC Brisbane band Powderfinger announced this morning that they will split after a final Australian tour.

Australia's biggest band said in a statement: "We have always maintained that the important factor for us as a group is that our music remain relevant and that we continue to have fresh ideas that inform our new songs. With the completion of our last album, Golden Rule, we feel that we have said all that we want tio say as a musical group.

"We firmly believe that it is our most complete and satisfying album and can't think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we believe in an also with, hopefully, our best tour to date.

"Following the release of our last few albums there has been speculation in the press that we were breaking up. We have only come to this decision to disband following our run of festival shows this last summer and even toyed with the idea of delaying this announcement until our tour was over. Finally we decided that it was much better mannered, and made a lot more sense, to give people the opportunity to come and celebrate with us as we make our way around the country one last time.''

The band will be supported on most of the tour by Jet, with The Vines as the opening act at the first three shows.

Will probably cop a lot for this but one of my fav bands and will be missed by a lot of people..

This is a great moment for Australian music.

I don't mean to offend, but once less bunch of rock poseurs can only be a good thing.

The Internationalist and Oddysey Number 5 are both great albums.

I don't think that they have reached that standard since then but at their best,I rated them highly.

I am not surprised. I have loved their music for years but only saw then live for first time at big day out Auckland 2010. Their set absolutely sucked, no motivation left and I was disappointed as they were one of the few acts I went to see. They have lost their mojo and it is time to wrap it up before they embarrass themselves further.

Good on em. No doubt their last few records were laboured. Still put on a quality gig though, and will go see 'em with bells on for their final show. Double Allergic and Internationalist are absolute jaffas.

Could only be bettered by Fanning losing his voice permanently, or having his tongue cut out.
While I don't wish the latter on him, I will continue to pray for the former.

I agree here.
At their best they made some really good music. At their worst it was repetitive and much like a lot of the other stuff on radio.

Vulture Street and Oddysey are very good albums.

I'll agree with that.

I'm not the biggest Powderfinger fan, but those albums (In Particular ON5) are decent.

Not a big loss otherwise..

oh great... triple j loses its biggest band it built up...

how are they going to move on without playing this midtempo adult contemporary easy listening music?

Used to be a big fan of their early stuff. Still listen to it occasionally, but hate their new shit for the most part. It's a good thing, no doubt.

agree with that

will also add that Bernard Fanning is a poor man's Bono or Eddie Vedder :p

although he has modeled everything on his hero, bowie. can see a connection to being a poor man's bono though, by thinking hes bigger than the band whilst being an arrogant **** big noting do-gooder wannabe at the same time.

their last 2 albums have been absolute trash.. especially golden rule.. ive tried to spin it, tried to listen to it. but as pjcrows said, it sounds very laboured.. and very boring. there were a couple of good songs to my ears on dream days, but not much else.

DA and inter however, are still on regular rotation in my car. absolutely brilliant albums.. virtually flawless on my aural accounts. good time to get out by the band.

looking forward to a nice outdoor gig with hopefully a mixture of tunes from the catalogue rather than the stock predictable sets theyve been pumping out since the VS tour.

Same with most people here, liked their earlier albums, ie. Double Allergic, The Internationalist and Odyssey Number 5.

Odyssey was definitely my favourite Powderfinger album, great album and probably their peak creatively/musically. Actually bought it when I was overseas in the UK. A few people back home were raving about it and I managed to track down a copy at HMV. Was on high rotation on my discman after that, this was pre-iPods of course.

Kind of been all downhill for them since then though. Had the odd good track here and there but album wise they were pretty average. Probably doing the right thing calling it quits before they deteriorated any further.

Agre with much of the sentiment on here. Was at the Icehouse the other day and the video of Passenger came up on the big screen. I realised how good they could have been, and how average they were after that album.

Fannings solo stuff is woeful in my book.

Best music news for ages.

Hopefully they all retire from music permanently and there are no side projects or reunions.
