Whilst the win was fantastic and one we needed badly the game the blues played worries me greatly.
Here is a Collingwood team missing over 7 of their top players and we get up and beat them by only 8 goals.
For once we kicked straight in the first quarter and the Pies kicked poorly. Otherwise it could have been a lot closer. They seemed to have the ball on a string in the second quarter and we couldn't get our hands on the ball. If it wasn't for Judd we could have easily lost the game. The margin flatters us.
I think we still have a long way to go before we are anywhere near a top 4 team.:(

Dont think Collingwood were any chance of beating us today and i think we dominated enough to smash them by 80 points...

Still need to beat undermanned teams like today and we did enough to do that!
Happy with a win.

Gotta love negativity after a win. Seems we had plenty of solid efforts today. 2nd and 3rd qtrs were filled with stuffing around with the ball but am happy with Kreuz Judd Gibbs murph Simmo Betts Robbo Waite Bower and others.

I thought the margin flattered the Pies actually. The game got ugly in the second quarter and the Pies got more of it but we still contained them with intensity at the contest.

Gotta love negativity after a win.

Just as some look to find positives in a loss, others look to see if there are any negatives after a win...

I don't care about the margin, im only concerned about our effort after last weeks performance. I don't think we put in a 4 quarter effort today - win or lose, I will be criticising this everytime if it occurs.

Yet the Collingwood team was on average, per player, 6 months older than ours & had 6 more games, per player, experience. We had 12 players with less than 50 games experience, compared to Collingwood's 11. Each team had 6 players with more than 100 games experience.

Although Collingwood were missing some good players from their forward line, we had a backline containing Jamison, Bower, Austin, Joseph, Browne, who between them have played a total of 88 AFL games.

People forget that we go into all games lacking experience & have relied on a ruck combination of Kreuzer (28 games), Hampson (14 games) & Jacobs (4 games) so far this season & are sitting on 4-4 & could easily have been sitting on 7-1, for the sake of an extra 3-4 goals.

FWIW, there are very few of us Carlton faithful who seriously believe we are a Top 4 team this season. Our losses against Essendon, Hawthorn & Freo have demonstrated that we are still a little bit short of Top 4, because Top 4 sides would generally get over the line in games such as them.

The pies never looked like kicking a goal outside of 5mins in the 3rd when davis played forward, our boys rarely got out of training mode until we had to for 5mins to ice the game.

Agree however in our losses to Ess Syd and Freo we did not play 1 single good qtr let alone 4 so I think there were plenty of positives today and we never let them back into the game even though we did not pulverize them!

I must say I wasn;t that confident going into this game, yes they had players out, still some not a bad side, Lockyer, Davis, Anthony, Swan, Pendlbury, Shaw (spud), Clarke, Presti. all these players were well beaten by our boys (bar Presti). Injries are no excuse.
They came at us in the 2nd we held our ground.
I am quite pleased with a 51 point win, there is constantly negativity when we win, we're not Geelong or St. Kilda...coming away with a 51 point win against that side is in my opinion is good. Stop complaining, get real, and be proud of 'em not bag 'em.

Perhaps I am putting too much expectations on the boys but that only stems from my belief in their capabilities - personally I was a little disappointed if our 4 quarter effort so thats why I raised the point. Im certainly not one to harp on about negativity though win or lose so I'll leave it at that.

Certainly plenty of positives - but just also making the point that there should be nothing wrong in constructive criticism after a win just as there is nothing wrong with looking for the positives after a very poor performance...of course, the problem with raising constructive criticism on these boards win or lose is that it ultimately gets lost amongst the endless criticism that gets raised for no other purpose than to be negative.

The old 5 is back

ps I have mellowed and only used the small book :D

Just a rough guess but isn't this about our 3rd highest winning margin since our fall from grace?

We have to remember where we came from and realise that the cycle is reversing and we are the ones dishing out the floggings more often these days.

You should keep in mind that Collingwood did flood back in that 1st half, making scoring pretty hard, given that's not how MM tends to line his team up. It wasn't until after half time when the game was more one on one that it started to open up a bit.

And really, a 51 point win over Collingwood is a pretty good effort.

I agree HBF :thumbsu:

We won every quarter, even the second where they seemed to win the clearances. We kept them goalless for 45 minutes and only 1 goal to half time, and that was not just their poor kicking, as Ratts said in the press conf, the pressure we applied caused them to bomb it in high, which makes defending easier.

We have the 3rd best attack in the comp (Stkilda has only kicked 9 points more than us) with Fev kicking 1 goal in 2 games, 3rd best defence so naturally 3rd best percentage, and we have lost 3 by less than a goal, character building and will happen to young up and coming teams. We have so much upside it is rediculous. These close games even out eventually.

We have beaten 2 top 4 rated sides. Nearly everyone would have had the Pies and the Dogs in their top 4, but lost to 2 bottom 4 rated sides. This stuff happens but 4/4 is a good place to be. Many of us (not me but I am an eternal optimist) did not rate us a genuine top 4 chance, so I would say we are sitting about where most of you predicted we would be, so what is the issue?

Cant we just rejoice in the win without picking holes in it?

Who is asking/wanting for a top 4 finish ???

For Crying out loud, I just want carlton to make the finals once again ...
Some people can't be satisified at all, a 51 point margain did flatter the Filth, and in context, it was better when u consider that Fevola didn't kick a goal today ..
No need to nit-pick after a big win against the old enemy IMHO.

Am quite happy to be PP and win by 51 points every week. What would you prefer-to play well and lose by 4 points every week??

Well said :thumbsu: its seem not matter what the margin is they all seem to bitch i'd rather win by what ever margin then lose by any margin.

least we got the 4 pts they bitch when we lose and they still bitch if we don;t win by big margin I'd take any margin .
