Intresting to see our Drafting was not Terrible we got some Player who played in the 1990 Flag team in:

  • Craig Kelly
  • Scott Russel
  • Tony Francis
  • Grahem Wright
So the drafting for the 80's for us was at least better then the 90's

Dave we got four out of how many picks?

Anyway drafting in the 80s wasnt an exact science and you will find most of those players were tied to collingwood before we read their names out

Really how where they Tied to the Pies?

Well francis for instance only nominated on teh proviso we drafted him, he had already signed basically

Just like north initially signed buckley before he was drafted, every club basically tampered so everyone got who everyone went after if you had the money ofcourse

Dave, didn't you already start this thread or very similar a few weeks ago?
And get the same answers?
Or am I somehow having reverse de ja vu?

Yeah i remember either posting something similar or reading similar info only recently to pie eyed

Don't know who was in charge of recruiting at the time, but there was a huge obsession with Tasmanian players in '88.

And south australia before that especially norwood

Graeme "I can handpass accurately 50 meters in any direction while being tackled" Wright would be one of our pickups around that time no?

From Tassie I mean.

Dave , I think OPti hit the nail on the head. They were very compromised drafts in those days. I had heard that Tony Francis told every other club that if drafted he would not leave South Australia.

I remember a Collingwood official told me they were going to draft Paul Williams in the uipcoming draft and that at the age of 17 would be a walk up start the following season(IIRC,Williams won the U17 National Championships medal from no less than Gavin Wanganeen).

Williams was indeed a walk up start, in a premiership side no less, and announced his arrival with a brilliant goal in his first game. Given his brilliant form and the fact that we took him so late in the draft, I refer you back to Opti's post.

Intertesting that most of our really good draft picks came late in their respective drafts( aside from the superb Graham Wright who IMO never got the recognition he deserved)

^yeah, Wrighty deserves more recognition for sure.

Many here may not realise that he started out as a small forward goal sneak. I remember in his first season or so it seemed that he was incapable of missing a set shot. However, it was when he was moved to the wing that he really shone. His run and carry through the middle, using his great pace, really opened things up and caused havoc with the opposition.

His career was relatively short lived, or shorter than it could have been, due to him getting a couple of freak rare diseases that cut him down. The most serious one (and i can't remember its name) effected his heart and layed him low for a while. He never regained his old form after coming back from this episode.

He was runner up in the Brownlow in 1990, our premiership year. That says it all really.

Wright, another fantastic cog in that great 1990 machine!

Was my very first favourite player.

Fast, skillful and a joy to watch.

Runner up to the worst Brownlow medal winner in the history of football.

1990 was a super year for him, with the exception of being baulked by Stephen Kolyniuk!

No it was wright

and i still remember my old man and brother calling him wright lighting (possibly was his nick i dont know)

He was definetly a smooth and blisteringly fast player and one of the fw after the early 90s that you knew would never miss a target

He should have won the 1990 Brownlow, but some little dog got 3 votes in a game where he wasn't considered in the sides best 6.
I'm sure he preferred the prise he got 5 days later. :)

Anyhow, Wrighty was a great player.

There was a game at VFL Park, I forget what year, in which GW was absolutely killing Hawthorn as a small forward, albeit a small forward with an amazing vertical leap. Hawthorn,as good as they were, could not find a way to stop him. He'd easily outmark their smaller backman and was far too mobile for their KPBs.

It was funny too as I was seated next to 2 Victorian cricketers and mad Pies fans in Rodney Hogg and Brendan McArdle. They were continually saying "How good is this guy", " God ,we've found a beauty", as they jumped around with rest of us. IIRC, we lost the game but it was one of the first sign posts on the way to a premiership.

Another Graham Wright would be mighty handy in '09.

So the point of this thread is to tell us that our drafting in the years before our 1990 Flag was "Not Terrible"?

errr....thanks for the revelation....
At least now we FINALLY know! The reason we won a flag in 1990 is because our drafting was Not Terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe we should Try to Not have Terrible Drafts Again? Maybe Then We could Win another flag Then?
