We all here have heard about the Premiership window - that is the time frame that a club has to win a flag before they fall into the realms of the wooden spoon.

on the radio it said that Port had just started a dynasty that could last 4-5 years ( this isn’t a crack at Port just the commentator really) however hasn't their Premiership window been open as long as Brisbane’s

i realize the crows window closed last year. so it isn't that much of a deal

teams who's window of opportunity is opening would be St kilda and Geelong
a team who's window is closing would be Essendon

Collingwood's window (or Mick's Premiership clock) is nailed shut.

West Coast, Geelong, St. Kilda and Port's will be wide open for at least the next couple of years.

I would think another 2 years for the Power.....without having the stats I'd say that would see the end of Primus, Francou(no influence this year granted), Wanganeen, James, Wakelin, etc. - given their personnel - they probably should've had a couple of flags by now.

Hawthorn/Richmond/Collingwood - shutters up and curtins drawn

Essendon - personally I think they are going no-where

Freo - next 3 years with this batch I think

Brisbane's transformation will be of most interest over the next 3 years

I fear the Crows may have a double dip over the next 4 years but I pray I'm wrong

drafting is just so important. Sides that can keep ahead of the clock will obviously do best

I actually think Poor Power has about 2 years left and doesnt it depend if Williams remains as coach? If Poor Power lost this weekend would he remain in the job?

Geelong and St Kilda I agree have opportunities to win but Geelong need a better forward to take advantage of their midfield ..

I think a lot of teams are waiting for Brisbane to fall over and IMO that will be next year.

Essendon are gone as are Collingwood .. Fremantle and West Coast are interesting as I feel Fremantles list is great but the coach has no idea and West Coast like Geelong need a forward to stand up.

Sydney are Sydney ..maybe the game plan isnt good enough to win a flag but to stay in the 8.

Primus and Francou - we have seen the impact of them missing the past 2 seasons (ie minimal) prefer them out there but we have reasonable cover.

Wanganeen - a fading star. Last season was tops granted but really is only a bit part to the side now anyways.

James - concerning departure but can't see him leaving within the next 3, he really is only peaking at the moment.

Wakelin - the sooner he leaves the better.

We should have a flag already. Hoping to remedy the situation on the weekend. ;) We have a good bunch of kids coming through, another good draft and we'll feel even better about it. Whilst we have Tredders down one end and Cornesy down the other we'll always be in reasonable shape.

Port's premiership window won't end until Tredrea is done (assuming no gross mismanagement).

I do expect we'll have a down year while we usher in a new defence though, though this could be lessened if we actually start playing young defenders while the old ones are still around.

Troy Chaplin y'all. The beast unleashed in '05.

see i'm not saying Port will get worse, dont get me wrong but they have been the front runers for 3 years now, if you look back ( assuming they win on the weekend - pleasse nooooo)but other teams are catching up.we can see that St kilda and Geelong have caught up, Sydney is kind of floating and teams like Melbourne seem to able to play extremely well ( ok in periods)

essendon had three years (only 1 flag)and then the comp caught up
Brisbane have had three years but Port were better team in the minor round for two of those three years so is this ports third year ???
North Melbourne had three years (maybe 4?) at he top the crows only had 2

these days teams dont get worse other teams just seem to get better ( either at what they do or how they do it ?)

you could even say that Hawthorn was the same as last year its just the comp got better - or changed making Hawthorn look worse ?

mate dont talk about not playing younger player here we all know where that leaves you !!

Porthos is pretty much spot on, as long as Chad and Warren are around, they are a chance. And there will be some teething problems when Wakelin, Bishop, Wanganeen, Montgomery and Hardwick (going this year) leave, and the likes of Chaplin and Pettigrew take over.

Port have a very good young midfield group as well - K.Cornes, Salopek, Ebert and Cassisi with Carr still 24.

I disagree that Collingwood's chances are over - I still think they'll be top four next year. They had a lot of injuries this year, and as long as Buckley is around, with Rocca and Tarrant up foward, they're a threat, IMHO. They have a number of dud youngsters, but they have Didak, Cole, Johnson, Richards and C.Cloke as well as Rowe, Morrison and B.Shaw in a couple of years who are all quality.

I don't think Port's premiership window is shutting tight, but they've now got the oldest list and they are gonna' have to perform some very clever list management over the next year or 2 to remain the 'power' they have been.

Don't forget, even with Hardwick's departure, there are still 8 30+ players on Port's list for next year. Montgomery (32 next year), Wanganeen (32), Francou (31), Wakelin (31), Bishop (30), Primus (30), Kingsley (30), Schofield (30).

I'm pretty sure the Power won't want that to happen. Therefore, at least a couple of these will be forced into retirement. Probably Montgomery and Schofield, if I was to guess.

Personally i think the 'premiership clock' is kinda fickle. It relies completely on the relative age of the players, doesn't take into account how quickly certain young players take to AFL football, the competition or any other factors.

He was actually talking about Port :)

2 years tops. In two years James, Monty, Kingsley, Wakelin, Wanganeen, Primus, Francou, Schofield, Lade, Wilson, Pickett and Bishop will all be 30 or 30+. Tredders, Cornes and Burgoyne will be 28+ and nearing the end of their prime. Carr will be packing his bags and heading home. People mention they have alot of promising youngsters, but there is a huge difference in being promising and being a consistently good AFL player.

Actually when you look closer, next year they will have 10 players who will be 30 or 30+ they will take over our mantle as the oldest list competition, if not, the oldest starting 22 in the comp.

If port dont win the flag this year the window slams shut 4.30 saturday afternoon or hopefully it slams before half time

Big difference between Port and the Crows, and say Essendon 2000, is that the talent pool is spread across all ages with no gap, and in the right percentages. Not sure how to word that differently, but if you have a think about it, it makes sense.
Our tall stocks appear to be more than good atm. We have our best prospects in the midfield, and the only thing missing wrt youngsters is a couple of tough nuts and a young ruckman. Keep getting conflicting reports about Ackland.
Also, players like Tredrea, Chad Cornes and Pickett still have many years to go, and wrt to Tredrea and Cornes, their best years are yet to come.
I'm expecting our team to get better over the next few years, not worse.

Now as far as Brisbane's premiership window goes.
That has been opened for a long time. From the last few Bears years. They had trouble winning in Melbourne, and also went into the finals with injuries early on.
Then they had a hiccup, but the top up they had with Fitzroy player, and the extended playing list that followed allowed them to filter their players so well that they eventually went bonkers.
Anyone that thinks it only opened up once Matthews went there has got a bad memory.

I tend to disagree with your comment that the Power midfield are very good.

K Cornes - tagger,
Salopek - Promising, but is denied opportunities,
Ebert - Looks more like a good small forward then a midfielder,
Cassisi - 2nd tier midfield,
Carr - Homeward bound, but if not, tagger ( not a game breaker in the Black/Judd/Del Santo mould).

The above will win the midfield battle on a couple of occasions but they are hardly in the Francou, Stevens, James, P Burgoyne mould. When you stack them up against the young midfields of West Coast, St K, Geelong, I know who I would rather have. I do not see a Judd/Kerr, Ball/Del Santo, Kelly/ Bartel/Ling amongst that lot. I also think that people write off the future chances of the B Lions at their peril. Charman, Hadley, Brown, Powell, Black, Copeland, Brennan are not a bad bunch of under 25's from where I sit.

Pickett will be 28 next year, I doubt his body will last much longer than 2 years, 3 years tops. How many good games did he play this year, it would be less than 6 ( including the first final against Geelong ). I think his days of cowardly scouring the outside of the packs trying to take out an unsuspecting ball player are just about over. When was the last time you saw him on the bottom of the pack hunting the hard ball?? This is where the truly tough players are found. As Robbie walls has stated a couple of times, he is starting to look over his shoulder wondering where the payback will come from.

I understood he had re-signed but I was more concerned with backroom( Alan Scott particularly) moves than any perceived coaching weakness. How do you satisfy major sponsors and still keep the faith with the supporters?

I think Alan Scott's only concerned was not reaching the GF while they finished top 2 years running.
I dont think it matters how Port go on Saturday, Williams will be safe either way.
They have stepped up this year from previous years, enjoyed their best season and they are playing arguably one of the best teams ever in the game, it would be pretty harsh to sack a coach after that but stranger things have happened I spose.

K Cornes, for just a tagger, got more possesions than everyone else at the Crows except for Roo and Mcleod. Not bad for just a tagger.

You have a go at Carr and K Cornes for being just taggers, you have a go at Cassisi for being second tier....but you praise Copeland?? And what has Brennan exactly done??

Ebert looks like just a small forward. Are we talking now or future? Salopek starved of oppurtunities...agreed NOW...but we were talking future midfield.

From where im sitting your post seems extremely tainted by your anti-Port bias.

I agree with you again. This is becoming disturbing.

KCornes is going to be a star. Josh Carr already is.

Salopek and Ebert I am not sure about, but Port's midfield is certainly very good

Good enough to roll Brisbane? Time will tell.

will Port have enough defenders to Hold Lynch, Brown and bradshaw especially if the start sending keating down forward the man is a mountain ??

and i dont like the idea of sending hardwick in the centre to "ruffle a few feathers" that could be the biggest mistake of the game - annoying the likes of aker and voss makes them play better not worse !!

I think the only thing Port have that will stretch the lions are small forwards
eg Burgoyne and logieneen they may cause some discomfort for the lions back men
