Has the potential to do an Egan: come from nowhere and win AA.

Let's not go overboard. Megan was a virtual loner in the position of traditional CHB and routinely beat the power forwards (Riewoldt, Brown, Pavlich etc). I doubt Prismall is going to be outplaying the dozen or so midfielders who could be though of as 'elite' in the competition.

I think they are keeping Prsimall cause of the salary cap issues they will have...if ome of the other guys wants to leave...then Prismal will slot straight in...

Personally id have the skill of Prismall ahead of the speed of Byrnes in our team this year...

From the GF team IN: Egan, Blake, Ablett and Prismall

OUT: Byrnes, King, Hawkins and ?????

I think N Ablett retiring and King and Gardiner leaving helped clear this list a bit but we need to insure for the future.

Man we have some depth...Look at the guys missing out. D Johnson, Gamble, Varcoe.

I doubt there were many two years ago who'd have thought Joel Corey would get into an AA team, and personally I think Prismall has the potential to be much better than Corey. AA is to large extent a matter of attracting the attention of the judges when it counts.

Having said that having the potential and getting enough games to demonstrate it are two different things, so barring something going wrong during the season, or him getting into absolutely blinding form, I can't see him playing more than 10-11 games this season.

He's saying all the right things too.

Premiership dream spurs Prismall

GEELONG midfielder Brent Prismall says watching his teammates claim the 2007 premiership will forever spur him on to be part of a team which reaches the same lofty heights.

The combative midfielder showed he’s worthy of a place in Geelong’s highly rated engine room in the Cats’ opening NAB Cup clash against Melbourne, racking up 35 touches in a display that had many commentators singing his praises.

Prismall told the press after the game that he’d still like to refine his game in the next few weeks before the season proper.

“I got a fair bit of the ball which was encouraging, but I probably didn’t use it as well as I would have liked, so I’ve got to look at improving that,” Prismall said.

“I thought I made some good attacking decisions, but it’s probably a little hard to analyse straight after a game, so I’ll sit down and have a good look at it this week.

“[Geelong] has shown they’re willing to give the young blokes a go. I got a fair bit of game time this week, so hopefully I can get the same amount of game time next week and I can build on that.”

Like coach Mark Thompson, Prismall conceded the Cats didn’t quite hit their straps on the day, despite the scoreboard showing a big win.

“It’s something to build on. There’s obviously some good things and some bad things to come out of the day,” Prismall said.

“I think from a team perspective, we played some good footy, but also some pretty ordinary footy.”

Prismall played the first five games of 2007 and looked to be on the verge of cementing his senior position before being rotated into the reserves. Then, just as he was ready to return to the fold, he broke his wrist.

Similarly to Tom Lonergan, he would eventually stave off the effects of injury to play a part in Geelong’s premiership-winning VFL team, but not in the AFL.

He says the prospect of being part of a trophy-winning team at a senior level has offered some serious motivation on the training track over summer.

“It’s definitely something I want to be involved in, and there were probably times last year where I pushed myself and my arm a bit too hard to get back too quickly.”

“But when I did eventually get back, I definitely felt like I could get back into the senior team and that I could contribute.

“It was just a frustrating year from my point of view, and I don’t want to dwell on it.”

Thompson said that missing out on the Grand Final side would be something that Prismall could use as a factor to lift his game in 2008.

“Yeah, I think it should be, and it has been for him. He’s trained very well [over summer],” Thompson said after the match.

“He was very very close to being in our best side last year, but unfortunately he hurt his arm. We’ve certainly got plans for him.”

Other clubs were rumoured to have plans for Prismall, too, but while he knew he was some way down the pecking order at Skilled Stadium, he never thought about asking to be traded.

“I definitely knew it going to be hard to get a go, but I never thought about looking elsewhere,” he said.

“It’s a good position to be in when the club has so many good midfielders like [Cameron] Ling, [Jimmy] Bartel, [James] Kelly, [Joel] Corey and [Gary] Ablett, the list goes on, and they give you something to learn from.

“I’m coming up against those guys every week in training, and it’s going to be a great challenge every week to hold my spot.”

very encouraging words from the kid. I have no doubt that he will play the majority of games, even if it's mostly off the bench. I see him in a rotation with Chapman, Kelly and Stokes as the 2nd midfield rotation changing on the the forward line.

No point asking about Prismall on this board.

95% of posters here grossly overate him and do so last year aswell.

Competing with Kelly,Selwood,Ling,Stokes,Bartel, Corey, Enright for a spot. Not easy, I seriously thought he would have sought opportunity at Essedon or another club.

5-10 games in 2008.

I think he'll be aiming for 10.

Then, depending on injuries, he could play 15-20 if he's lucky.

I think if he has a good run with injuries but only plays 5 senior games, he'll certainly be looking for opportunities elsewhere. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Very impressive game by Pris. Again his only problem is that he has 4 All Australian midfielders in front of him and a NAB Rising star just for good measure. Certianly on that performance he deserves a spot in the midfield rotation but who he replaces will be a tough one for the selection committee.

given the gfc had a dream run with injuries last year, he should get more opportunities this year, and i don't think chapman will be rushed early in the year due to op,

I heard Chapman is meant to play next week. I think he will play 15+ games. He should have played 15+ last year but for injuries. Prissa may take Rooke's spot or Chappy could play closer to goal and Byrnes/Varcoe booted. I don't rate Prismall as an option at small forward.

Is Rooke on the long term injury list or something? I dont think Pris is gonna get selected before someone form the leadership group. Rooke is an integral part of our starting 18 and although i love Pris, he will not get the nod ahead of Max.

Also, people saying that Byrnes should be dropped for Pris are a tad misguided. Totally different roles; the competition for Byrnes' spot are Djerrkura, Gable and maybe Davenport but not Prismall.

We will unfortunately need to get a couple of injuries to key mids to see Pris this year i think or they will need to reinvent his or someone from the midfield's role to fit him in.

According to Rookie, he was being rested.

no, thats not what bombers been doing. Everyone knows Prismall is a better player than Byrnes forssy, nevertheless Byrnes continually gets selected before him... why, because he plays the role of 'forward line defensive pressure' and 'goal sneak' better than Prismall, whose best skills are long kicking and in and under play.

(I'm not a huge Byrnes fan either but there is a reason he was selected ahead of Pris in the GF last year)

It seems that some people think Pris is a good player but because our team is so damn good he would not be able to cement a spot in the seniors.
It has been said a few times that he is a better footballer than Byrnes although they do play different roles. Do you think Pris will have to "re-invent" himself in a different position to get a spot in the team?

I was thinking more along the lines of someone else reinventing themselves to allow Pris entry into the engine room. Perhaps Kelly could play more in the forward line??? Im not sure how much longer Linga will be running with players, in a year or two he may play more in the forward line opening up a spot?

Having said all of that however, i have noticed Pris is handy around goal, perhaps he could swap between the half forward line and the midfield.

Mmm yeah, I didn't even think about that. I don't know how Kelly would go in the 'more' forward line. I would rather play Pris up 'more' forward but then thats still a problem. Ahh I'm glad I'm not in the selection committee but I really REALLY want Pris to get a good go this season.

I'm confused... did what i write not make sense ...

According to a recent report Selwood has been improving some of his defensive skills in a bid to be able to play a defensive role in the side...if need be...

Bomber has said already he has plans for Prismall this season.

I think the bottom line out of all that is Geelong doesnt want to be too predictable...everyone will be coming after us this season as we know and we have to be ready to change things up a bit if that need arises. The midfield is where we are most versatile and Bomber should be looking at how he can extend our mix and depth given he has the resources to do so.

I think Geelong wont just be looking at the ins and outs of the side this season as a means of development but which players can also develop and expand their possible positioning on the field of play. Geelong might also look to a rotation system that allows certain quality mids a week off here or there during the season especially the older ones like the Coreys and Ling. This will all be based on who we are playing and what the structure of the team needs to be that week. The reality is if we have the depth we should exploit that every which way we can. If that means including a guy like Prismall, who anybody could see Saturday is ready for the step up to regular senior footy...then so be it. This can only create more headaches for the opposition if we have the luxury of slipping Selwood back for instance and Jimmy, Kelly and Gaz forward at different stages. If we also have the ability and resources to keep our mids relatively fresh during the season then we should be striving to achieve this also. It all counts in the end.

On that basis I think 10-15 games for Prismall is reasonable.

Can hardly call Joel old...

Because that means he is old so am I! He is really just entering his prime.

Looked good on Saturday - I'd think he'll play a good ten or so games this season, depending on injuries and such. Some of his skills were a little suss on Saturday but he is a ball magnet and his skills are fundamentally good - did some very nice things and to pick up 35 touches is a fair effort first go back.

Will be keeping an eye on him, he could become very good pretty quickly.
