So yeah I spend more time on here than I should, mostly procrastinating. Why is it so? Why do I care about reading pointless arguments on topics that ultimately make no difference to my every day life?

Is there some science behind it? Uni taught me one thing - how to procrastinate real good.

Humans are social animals. Communicating with/being 'included' (by virtue of the fact you can read them) in the arguments of other people helps fulfil that need, irrespective of medium.

Plus there are some genuinely funny/interesting posts on GD.

Probably this. It gets me my social fix but without having to physically interact with actual people.

I'm gonna go risk/reward/motivation concept. For a start big footy and posting is fun. Reading and posting the threads are enjoyable. Hence you go on it. It is short term as well. Log on and away you go.

Work/Study is not fun. It sucks most of the time. The reason for doing it is the pay off at the end which leads to enjoyment. For the most part this is money. Do well at work get paid, get a promotion get more money, buy and do cool things. Get a degree which leads to more lucrative opportunities down the track.

Where the struggle for motivation comes from is when no benefit can be seen. Sure rock up to work and try but you may get retrenched/lose the promotion, study and fail your exam, get the degree but find yourself without a job anyway. Adopting a long term strategy like this (similar to an AFL club rebuild) requires a degree of faith things will go right and luck the pieces fall into place. A poor result, lack of enjoyment and even tiredness can easily lead to procrastination.

If that's the ugly cousin to you then you're going to the wrong websites..

A cautionary tale for those who propose spending 3-odd years of their lives studying something they hate, so they can spend the rest of their lives working at something they hate. All of which presupposes that they would even complete a course in something they hate.

I have two assignments due tomorrow that I haven't looked at. I didn't go to a lecture last week so I have 10 to catch up on in the next few days.

Yet I've spent the last hour looking up obscure football stats. Did you know Brent Guerra's never lost to Carlton in 14 different games? Crazy stuff

Yeah, I have ridiculous amount of lectures to catch up on, and ergo, study to do. But, considering I won't leave the house until, probably, Friday, I have heaps of time to... Continue reading shit on BigFooty.
