I just got a ps3 after owning a ps2 for about 6 years.

I have only got one game for it so far which is assasins creed.

But i notided that now i only have 30gb of space left after setting the ps3 up and instaling one game?

So when this space runs out does this mean i wont be able to play any new games i buy? Are you able to buy more memory?

Sorry to ask but i just wouldnt have a clue about any of it so ithought i better ask you guys

games dont take up memory on the ps3's hard drive. the game is just the disc, when you save game files it takes up hard drive space. but not that much really.

so basically, you wont really need to buy more memory if you're only using it for games.

When some games install they can eat a fair bit of hard drive space. This is different to saved games (i.e. progress in a game) which doesn't use as much space.

So if you fill up your hard drive, you can delete install data of an old game you no longer play while still having the saved game data. If you go back to that game at a later stage, it'll simply re-install itself. The same rule applies if you have full games which you downloaded. You can delete them and they'll always be available online to download again (you only pay once for them, and you may re-download them free).

If you find the 40GB hard drive isn't big enough, you can easily upgrade to something bigger. The hard drives are basically laptop SATA hard drives, so you can easily put in a 160GB or 250GB or whatever is available depending on what you want to spend. It's simple to do and the instructions to do it come with the PS3.

Mate you're way off here. MGS4 will have a 5gb install. DMC4 has 5gb, 25 minute install. You might as well be playing a Commodore 64 with a tape drive.

Assasin's Creed has a 1.5gb install, Oblivion 4gb. Hot Shots Golf, Lost Planet, GT5P take sup 6 gigs! If you plan on owning and regularly playing more than 6 or so games (that is not counting any movies or anything else you have loaded onto your HD) you will need to buy a replacement HD.

oh ok, thankyou, that was really helpfull, thanks so much

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the firmware and such will take up a reasonable chunk of HDD space?

yep. A brand new untouched 40GB PS3 would probably have about 32-35GBB free space.

I have 20+ games and still have plenty of space on my 40G HD.

Only a few selected games need massive installations, it wont be an issue.

Rubbish.

6 or so install games is what I meant. Apart from that, what is incorrect?

Worst case scenario I guess, but in reality there's plenty of room. I've never had to remove anything and I have most of the 6 you've mentioned. I am about to install MGS, so we'll see how that goes.

This is true. Can I ask how many PS3 owners here have purchased a bigger drive for their PS3s?

I haven't as yet...got the 60gig launch model. So far I have GTA4 and Everybody's Golf that have required installs. Also have guitar hero and cod4.

Have considered a 250g hard drive purely because I d/l a heap of 1080p & 720p content so its a bit of a bitch to keep on dvdr-dl. At this stage I will stick with the 60g but perhaps upgrade if my game installs ever become an issue.

Anyone know where to find these, I have been looking at a few places and all of them are just portable or external ones, can anyone reccomend a place that sells the internal HDDs?

I haven't yet, I got the 60GB model and have approx. 30GB left still, I only want to upgrade as I know I will have my PS3 for a long time and will after time need to get more as anyone would with a build up of games, I don't really ever delete my game data.

External ones are HDs that get plugged into the USB right? So you can have more than one HD?

Yeah, but I don't think you can really use an external one as your main HD for the system.

But what you could do is put all your media onto one and all game data onto another.
