Cant go past frenzal rhomb as far as im concerned, check out their first couple of albums work
but yes get a bit of it all. The old school legends (Dead kennedys, minor threat), the english pioneers (clash, pistols, damned) , the thoughtful (Bad Religion), More modern day legends (NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise) the Swedes (millencolin) and the Dropkick Murphys.
Or have a listen to short fast loud on the J's

The Birthday Party, how have they not been mentioned in this thread yet?
Fugazi
Great list there Spermbird. Just curious have you seen the film documentary, American Hardcore? It's based on a book by Steve Blush and the book is probably better because it goes into more depth but the film has some amazing rare live performances. One of the best music docos ever and essential viewing for anyone vaguely interested in the history of punk.
Ha, i agree with your thoughts on rancid, they have some very good songs but they have some real shit stuff out there.Rancid are one of the most overrated bands of all time. Basically their entire schtick has been to lift various elements of other bands and pass it off as their own. Essentially they're a promoter's wet dream of what punk is supposed to be. They have some catchy tunes, but to me they're completely soulless with nothing that can be claimed as their own.
Frenzal Rhomb are just rubbish and don't belong in the same sentence as Bad Religion, Minor Threat, NOFX etc.
Pennywise were a great band, but they haven't had a good record in over ten years. If you check them out listen to their self-titled and Straight Ahead.
What kind of punk is the OP looking for? Seventies? 80s hardcore? Pop punk? Modern hardcore? Nowadays punk is a pretty big tent...
Here are some bands you should look at:
80s Hardcore
Minor Threat
Bad Brains
Black Flag
90s Punk
Bad Religion
Refused
NOFX
Lagwagon
Modern Punk
The Bronx
Modern Life is War
Have Heart
Cancer Bats
also, if you're looking for an Aussie band to latch onto, check out 50 Lions from Byron Bay... these guys are set for big things.
I can dig that. I can see why people might like them, I just think they're pretty empty after 10 minutes of listening. Jay's a top bloke in my book for sticking it to Sandilands, I just think his band is pretty ordinary. hahaDisagree on Frenzal tho, great band IMO anyway

frenazal are pretty under-rated. better than bad religion and all that.
I tried to just add bands that hadn't been brought up yet, thinking about the stuff that I have in my record/CD collection
I saw the film American Hardcore at the MIFF last year along with the Minutemen doco.
Its a very good film about Hardcore music, the Punk Attitude doco was pretty good too.

I'm not certain if you're being serious but if you are then that's the stupidest thing I've read on this forum. Frenzal Rhomb, who have a few catchy little numbers, aren't even in the same league as Bad Religion. Jay would probably be the first bloke to admit he's not good enough to tune Brett Gurewitz's guitar let alone upstage B.R.
Frenzal have that song about punching people in the face, Bad Religion have Infected, I Wanna Conquer the World, Suffer, Supersonic, Los Angeles is Burning, Generator et al.
