If you are looking for older music, then cant go past legends in Sex Pistols, The Clash, Black Flag and The Saints.
Newer stalwarts include Green Day, Rancid and NOFX.
However, best punk band around right now hands down is Billy Talent

That sounds...inaccurate.

For current bands, you're probably best to start with ones that have signed with Fat Wreck Chords at some stage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Wreck_Chords

Other prominent labels include
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_records
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellcat_Records
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Heart_Records

A quick flick through them I'd start on;
The Hives
Millencolin
Refused
NOFX
Frenzal Rhomb
Strung Out
Anti-Flag
Pennywise
Rancid
Dropkick Murphys
Rise Against

one not listed worth checking out is Dead Kennedys

They should give you a range of different sounds

Cant go past frenzal rhomb as far as im concerned, check out their first couple of albums work

but yes get a bit of it all. The old school legends (Dead kennedys, minor threat), the english pioneers (clash, pistols, damned) , the thoughtful (Bad Religion), More modern day legends (NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise) the Swedes (millencolin) and the Dropkick Murphys.

Or have a listen to short fast loud on the J's

Rancid are one of the most overrated bands of all time. Basically their entire schtick has been to lift various elements of other bands and pass it off as their own. Essentially they're a promoter's wet dream of what punk is supposed to be. They have some catchy tunes, but to me they're completely soulless with nothing that can be claimed as their own.

Frenzal Rhomb are just rubbish and don't belong in the same sentence as Bad Religion, Minor Threat, NOFX etc.

Pennywise were a great band, but they haven't had a good record in over ten years. If you check them out listen to their self-titled and Straight Ahead.

What kind of punk is the OP looking for? Seventies? 80s hardcore? Pop punk? Modern hardcore? Nowadays punk is a pretty big tent...

Here are some bands you should look at:

80s Hardcore
Minor Threat
Bad Brains
Black Flag

90s Punk
Bad Religion
Refused
NOFX
Lagwagon

Modern Punk
The Bronx
Modern Life is War
Have Heart
Cancer Bats
also, if you're looking for an Aussie band to latch onto, check out 50 Lions from Byron Bay... these guys are set for big things.

if we're going to talk about hardcore, i might as well name shipwreck ad, have heart, bane, boy sets fire and hot cross, as bands that should be listened to...i guess botch can be named as well even though they don't really count

say anything - a bit pop punky but wouldn't ever be classified soley as that, still worth a listen though

A few more to add to the list are:

Early UK Punk
Stranglers
Stiff Little Fingers

First Wave US
The Ramones
The Dead Boys

Pre Punk
Stooges
New York Dolls

Oz Punk
Radio Birdman

Early LA
The Germs
X

Second Wave US
Descendents
Minutemen
Circle Jerks
Misfits

Canadian
DOA
Nomeansno

plus the one and only Spermbirds cannot be missed either

That should give you a little more to go on with

Hot Snakes - drive like jehu in punk form, which means they ****ing rule

Great list there Spermbird. Just curious have you seen the film documentary, American Hardcore? It's based on a book by Steve Blush and the book is probably better because it goes into more depth but the film has some amazing rare live performances. One of the best music docos ever and essential viewing for anyone vaguely interested in the history of punk.

I tried to just add bands that hadn't been brought up yet, thinking about the stuff that I have in my record/CD collection

I saw the film American Hardcore at the MIFF last year along with the Minutemen doco.

Its a very good film about Hardcore music, the Punk Attitude doco was pretty good too.

Ha, i agree with your thoughts on rancid, they have some very good songs but they have some real shit stuff out there.
Disagree on Frenzal tho, great band IMO anyway

Forgot about the Descendents and Stiff Little Fingers, another great band is Op Ivy

frenazal are pretty under-rated. better than bad religion and all that.

I can dig that. I can see why people might like them, I just think they're pretty empty after 10 minutes of listening. Jay's a top bloke in my book for sticking it to Sandilands, I just think his band is pretty ordinary. haha :p

I'm not certain if you're being serious but if you are then that's the stupidest thing I've read on this forum. Frenzal Rhomb, who have a few catchy little numbers, aren't even in the same league as Bad Religion. Jay would probably be the first bloke to admit he's not good enough to tune Brett Gurewitz's guitar let alone upstage B.R.

Frenzal have that song about punching people in the face, Bad Religion have Infected, I Wanna Conquer the World, Suffer, Supersonic, Los Angeles is Burning, Generator et al.

Go listen to suffer and say Frenzal is better.

Worst post ever.

You mean Punk's Not Dead? Yeah that was pretty good.

Minutemen doco? What's it called? I haven't heard about it...:o:confused:

bad religion just dont do it for me anyway. theres heaps better shit out there.

Aus Rotten.
Caustic Christ.
Behind Enemy Lines.
Bad Brains.
Chaos UK.
Circle Jerks.
Crass.
Conflict.
Crude SS.
Discharge. (True hardcore. These guys are legends)
Disclose.
Disrupt.
Doom. (these guys might be a bit too heavy for some people)
The Exploited. (overrated but decent)
GBH.
Los Crudos. (great latino hardcore band who sing all their songs in spanish)
Poison Idea.
Reagan Youth.
SS Decontrol.
The Varukers.

Etc etc. Doesnt take much to find some great punk/hardcore bands. I try to stay away from the new stuff though, its rubbish.

I'm not going to say BR are worse but I think you underestimate much of Frenzal's serious content...songs like U.S.Anus, Lead Poisoned Jean, Who'd Be A Cop?, White World, Red Wine And Altar Boys etc address very real and serious issues.

Ultimately their music isn't always about preaching or rebellion but rather what they feel or encounter. It doesn't make it worse, merely a different brand.

I also once remember reading an interview with Bernard Fanning who declared Jay Whalley as one of his favourite lyricist because he was such a wonderful storyteller.

But I don't buy that preachiness or protest is the most respectful form of music. For Christ's sake, Pink does it. Many of the greatest songs from the greatest bands are frivolous in their content.
