what nut thing am i supposed to click on

When you open up the folder on your computer somewhere named Qooty, there should be three folders named data, utils, and comments. There should also be files named Game, Game0, Menu, Numlock, Q, and Qooty

The file named Q will have an icon with a little nut inside of a box.
Click on that one to open it

Make sure that you QBasic file is saved in the C folder, not in program files because it wont work

Can you folks with the path not found error please check inside the 'Data' directory and make sure there is a file inside it named 'Leagues.dat' please.

If its there, then its the 'PATH$" bit that isn't working, which I'll have to fix for yers.

ok, i've got the nut thing open, and when i click enter, i got the following error:

"Subscript out of Range"

260 OPEN "I", #1, PATH$ + "\" + NL$(L%, 2) + "\TEAMS"

IS that the problem everyone else is getting.

The second-last menu option in the main menu (which runs when the program starts) is 'Alter Path' ... it refers to the path on MY computer as to where the Qooty folder is.

Change it to represent your folder (in DOS path format). Include the Qooty folder eg C:\Qooty or C:\Games\Qooty or wherever it is you've put it.

joshem, it can be downloaded from the Sweet FA site, under the question and answer page.

Re the path : Double-click Q.bat and up will come a screen with a main menu. The second-last option on the menu is 'Alter Path'. Select it and press enter, and then enter your own path in there.

ok, i was able to create a league, then i click on the play game option.

When i click on "2" to move down, i get a subscript out of range. this is from the chooset.bat file and This is the line:

640 IF NT$(S, 2) = T$1 and L$(1) = NL(L, 2) then color 10,5

If you've got a league created, then now its time to create a team.

That's on the main menu - Choose SETUP LEAGUE from the main menu using the up and down cursors on your numeric keypad (8 and 2).

When SETUP LEAGUE is highlighted, scroll through the sub-options in that menu choice, using left and right on your numeric keypad (4 & 6).

You will find that there are various options under SETUP LEAGUE, one of which is NEW TEAM.

Press enter when that option is selected, and a small display will appear over the top of the display, showing leagues on the left, and teams within the highlighted league on your right. The right one should be empty at this stage.

Choose leagues with the left and right cursors (4 & 6) - IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LEAGUE THEN THESE WON'T DO ANYTHING. Press enter, and the one league will be committed to the program's memory.

Enter a team name, an 8-digit version of the team name, and then a 20-player team.

If happy, type 'Y' and you will return to the main menu. You now have one team in one league.

You should be able to play a match, now, that one team against itself. (This will pretend there are two teams with the same names for players in it).

NOTE : You may want to change GAME SETUP to ensure no PLAYER STATS are saved, until you are ready to play season matches. Otherwise, goals etc in praccy games will be added to season tallies!

Extra hints : Prompts for Y/N and K/C usually require that CAPS LOCK is on.

Give it a burl ...

IT WORKS!! WOO HOO!!

IM 20 MINUTES INTO THE FIRST QUATER OF MY FIRST GAME ON THIS QOOTY THING AND THE SCORE IS AS FOLLOWS:
HAWTHORN: 7.2.44
ESSENDON: 3.1.19

OH I WISH IT WAS REAL!! HAHA

Cor blimey! Funniest thing about all this is that the error I was EXPECTING is far too high, or far too low, scores, due to different PC speeds.

Glad we got THAT bit right!

There's a few functions in there that might take a while to work out, fluctuation graphs, Configuration settings, reserve and senior player stats, highests and lowests, win/loss ratios, all that sort of thing ... but just ask me the questions as you come across them!

That continuing path error might be due to the difference betwen DOS paths and WINDOWS paths. If any of the folders that QOOTY is held within has a name MORE THAN EIGHT letters long, DOS calls it something different, reducing it to 8 characters.

EG : C:\australianrules might be called C:\austra~1

... if another folder in C:\ before it ever existed with 'austra' as its start, then the folder might be called C:\austra~2

Check it out in DOS. Bring up a DOS prompt, go to the directory (using 'cd [directory name]') and ge a directory listing ('dir').

If this isn't the problem, let me know.

vanders :
There is a setting in GAME SETUP which sets whether users can make positional changes. It is originally set to off. In honesty, I can't remember what keypress invokes it when the setting is on. I could have a look for you, though. I don't use it myself, as, in a random game, the changes should also be made randomly (original setup allows the computer to make random changes).

Alternatively, if you want to make changes PRIOR to playing the game, use the TRANSFER option. This is in the ALTER LEAGUE submenu. Choose ALTER LEAGUE and then use the left and right cursors on the numeric keypad (4 & 6) to find the TRANSFER option, then press ENTER.

Choose your league and team as you normally would and press ENTER. Then use the up and down cursors to select the player you want to move. Press ENTER when selected. Find the league and team again, and choose the player you want to swap WITH. Press ENTER again.

While looking at a team this way, you can press the SPACEBAR to toggle on and off the player stats. At this early stage, though, you may not have any stats to look at!

vanders :

On changing players during a game ... first the setting has to be changed in GAME SETUP, and then during play, capital D works for DRAGGING a player, ie swapping one of the eighteen on the ground with one of the two on the bench.

It looks pretty ugly though, the way I've set it up, and also I think that the clock continues to move on while you're deciding.
