I have never seen touched or read whats on the premiership cup.

Can someone tell me if.

1. Each season the premiers are given a premiership cup or are they given a replica?

2. Is there a perpetual cup that is kept by the governing body? If so does this cup have all the names of the premiers engraved on it? If so how far back does the current cup go?

did they have VFL or AFL or AFL/VFL engraved on them?

Good question.

I saw it in the Footy Record during Heritage week last year. I think there were 9 of them in total, they "looked like" the current cup but I dont recall what the actual printing was.

I'll have a look for it at home tonight because its still in the magazine rack I think.

And last year they made a bunch of replicas to replace flags from earlier years and we got one then, so nyah undies. :p

That buggered up a great footy trivia question.
Question: Who has the most VFL/AFL premiership cups?
Answer: Hawthorn 9. They never started awarding a cup until 1959.

I used to win money with that one :)

Iv'e had the pleasure of holding the 2004 premiership cup, and it is very real. A new one is made each year.

Which, at something like $10,000 a pop, is the most disgusting misuse of AFL money.

True, but the AFL only paid for 1 cup per club for those entitled to them (I believe 7). If clubs earnt more they had to pay for the rest themselves.

Also the ones given out last season for pre 1959 had on them

Victorian
Football League
19??
Premiership Cup
Won By
????????

Since 1990, they replaced Victorian with Australian.

Fair enough, and thanks.

Still $70,000 - count it - $70,000 and for what?

The issue is not whether they had the "A" or the "V" on the cups, it's the misuse of money to satisfy the egos of some clubs.

When those premierships were won, cups were not given. Tuff. Even allowing a club to make a replica now, even if they pay for it themselves, is wrong.

Just reading the article again now (I've got it in front of me) and they were;

Five clubs received cups for individual years, being;

Collingwood (1927,1928,1929,1930)
Essendon (1949,1950)
South Melbourne (1909)
Footscray (1954)
Fitzroy (1944)

Richmond and Geelong received a cup each representing the years they won premierships;

Geelong (1925,1931,1937,1951,1952)
Richmond (1920,1921,1932,1934,1943)

Four clubs indiciated that they would order cups for the individual years (Collingwood,Essendon,Brisbane(as Fitzroy) and Sydney (as South Melbourne)

Carlton and Melbourne would be presented with cups at a later stage.

And as was asked before, they all say Victorian Football League.

I don't mind if they just add a plaque to our 2004 cup when we win this year. Actually it'll make it easier for us, the trophy room at Alberton already takes up two floors.
As for the engraving it follows the old VFL format and so says "this way up".

As soon as it comes to Freo I'll let you know Skip.
Good one purplesoul :) In fact the 2004 AFL trophy will be at the round 1 game when Freo hosts Port Adelaide. Port are taking the trophy over so that their WA fans can see it.

Collingwood and Essendon have opted to pay themselves for the other ones.
