Sounds like a real good pick - in theory. Big question is this - when he steps up to the AFL and every player he comes up against is bigger, quicker and stronger than he is used to, and he is no longer an outstanding athlete but just another footy player, how is he going to stand up? Its a real problem we've faced time and time again (Prendergast anyone?), and its not particularly promising that issues with his kicking style are already being highlighted...
Still, its not a bad pick with number 51 - speculative, but you could do a lot worse than take someone who at the very least will be physically up to modern fast-paced football.

so why didn't we take him with our pick 35.

Where did you have Grigg rated Gilly?Very simple answer to that, because WH and team had Austin ranked inside the top 20![]()
I get the feeling it was a great draft for our recruiting team and they would be chuffed with the way it panned out....
Austin, ranked in the top 20 taken at #35
Benjamin ranked inside the top 30, taken at #51
Anderson rated much higher than #67
Hampson arguably the second best ruckman in the draft after Leuey
Not much more needs to be said about Bryce
and that other guy....... Steve Briggs?

they could go for a few more forwards in the preseason draft more scoring power more decoy to take pressure off fev![]()

Clinton Benjamin reminds me a lot of Jarrad Oakley-Nichols (Tigers, Pick #8, 2005).
Only Benjamin is faster and slightly taller.
Also, Judging by what I've seen of Oakley Nichols so far - I wouldn't mind betting that Benjamin has better skills also![]()
I wasn't bagging you.I had him 30-40 as well. The thing that dropped him down was that most of his possessions he seems to get from playing very wide of his opponent and he will have to be more accountable at AFL level. I can easily see how some recruiters would have him top 20. A lot of the blokes i rated above him i suspect have more talent, but less tools to make it as pure mids in the AFL...e.g your Collards and O'Brien's who slipped as we know. Grigg has the potential to be a versatile midfielder int he AFL and that is obviously what we were looking for. Pace, good attitude, height and knows where to run to get the ball. We obviously think that we can work on the defensive aspects of his game. I am not unhappy with this selection, and it always gnawed at me that i didn't quite rate him, yet i always felt that he might go to an Essendon or the like and become a very good player.
And i will add i am one of these mug draft watchers that is prepared to acknowledge my limitations and defer to our team who can actually speak to these kids, speak to their coaches, do the psychological profiles, watch them over a number of years, have access to their draft camp results, etc...
