It is important to make sure that you get fitted correctly if you want to improve. I believe I saw that you're 23? so hopefully you will not grow out of the clubs you get. Simply head down to Ray Drummond or somewhere similar and ask to have a hit into their nets and mention your situation (beginner, looking for clubs, etc.) A lot of the people that work there will be able to give you handy tips regarding your swing as well.

There is no obligation to buy their clubs and if money is a bit of an issue, I'd suggest asking them to fit you then have a look around ebay for some good quality second hand clubs similar to the ones they suggest.

As mentioned in the other thread, golf can be a very handy social skill to have for corporate / charity days as well as being a hell of a lot of fun. Good luck :thumbsu:

Very good point. I am 6ft 4 so id rather not have tiny clubs. Will find a drummonds and try get their on the weekend. Thanks. Say those clubs are a good size, is the material good, will the last? As I said, not aiming to be tiger woods, just a hit of golf once a month or so.

My mate got those woodworms when he first took up golf. The irons are reasonable. He ended up breaking his driver in the first few weeks though.

I guess they would be an alright set to start with, but I think you would want to upgrade if you start getting into it more.

I didn't realise that you were tall, that reinforces the need to get fitted. I'm 6'6'' and until about 8 months ago was playing with the set i got when i was 17 (have grown about 6 inches since then) and the difference is amazing. Being a taller guy, you will definitely need longer clubs to allow you to stand taller at address.

I have heard good and bad stories about the woodworms. My opinion would be to avoid the cheap and nasties as much as possible as I find you usually get what you pay for in golf equipment.

Yeah if you are going to play often then maybe try get your hands on a reasonable set.

As Yaz said if you get yourself fitted that is ideal, even if you just find out a rough size you need and try to get clubs close to that size.

Golf clearance warehouse has pretty good priced stuff if you want to buy new clubs.

Speaking of golf, knocking off early in a few minutes to have a round with all the big wigs at work.

What a great reason to leave work early :)

Also try www.golfclearanceoutlet.com.au , and they have a store in narre warren too.

Being the height you are it is probably worth getting fitted, but if you're going to spend a bit make sure you keep playing!

You definitely need club fitting. You're probably looking at shafts an inch longer than standard and heads bent 1 or 2 degrees upright.

You'd be wasting your time buying off the rack.

Get a couple of lessons with a club fitting session thrown in. Well worth it long term.

Once you get the clubs which suit you, play as often as possible for a couple of months. Lessons are worthwhile, not just to become a better player, but to get more enjoyment from playing, because you have a higher level of competence. A warning though, you are flirting with a dangerous addiction. The addiction manifests itself most often after you've gone through 17 holes of shit play, and then pull off a monster drive on the 18th, or chip in from off the green. It is this one shot which will convince you to go back and play again. The beauty of the game is that you can just turn up at a golf course and play with whoever is waiting at the first tee, as long as there are no more than three others in the group. If you have your golf clubs with you when you travel, you'll never be short of entertainment and companionship anywhere in the world.

The other reason to play as much as possible early on is to learn the etiquette of the game. Most people with whom you play will be happy to point out what is required. This etiquette of which I speak is not just about good manners, but also about the safety of yourself and others.

It is a fine, but fraught thing you are taking on.

This is exactly what happened. Only played 9 holes but did shit all day, on the 9th, a Par 5, massive drive straight down the guts. Managed to get my first par of the day on my last hole. That is why im going back :p

i've looked at those clubs too Quiv, i figure for a couple hundred it's not a bad investment if the irons are ok

golf is all about that 1 magical shot you hit out of 120 all day!

If you're committed to playing fairly regularly then, finances permitting, you may as well 'invest' in a decent and well fitted set to start you out. It's worth it and will make playing more enjoyable and will hopefully allow you to improve at a faster rate.

Shit i'd quit if i only hit 1 decent out of a 120, hell i'd neck myself i think if i shot 120 :D.

my favourite store in Melbourne http://www.golfclearanceoutlet.com.au/

May have to have a hit one day with you mate now you are over this neck of the woods.

How will you fit them on the back of the bike?
Im sure there is a way I could manage strapping them to the back seat. Other than that, I get my brother to play as well and take his car, or take the GF's car.

Just get one of the 'backpack' bags with the fold out legs. They're very popular.

If you want quality for money, then I'd go with Tommy Armour. I own a set of Titleist AP1's, as I am quite serious (although shithouse).

My Dad bought a set of Tommy Armour's from the clearance place in Huntingdale for under $400, and I can say they are just as good as my Titleists.

You will get a shitload of use out of them, and they are durable as.

I put a bit of money into a set of golf clubs (made up of Nike and Taylormade clubs) and I couldn't be happier. I have heard bad stories about the cheap brands on ebay and stuff like that so I would stay away from them.

It's certainly a sport that you love to hate. I love playing the game but I am hopeless at it, still doesn't stop me from getting out there regularly though.

Okay, thanks Hand.

At the moment, id say my budget is about 400 bucks. Any recommendations for price that or should I save a bit more?
