Question Re Fox Footy

The world is changing. At a guess I’d say the average impressionable kid these days is more likely to get into a sport via social media than broadcasting. It’s all about the ‘gram.

I think it happens earlier than insta - in the early years whilst they still have human rather than digital parents. So what their parents are watching is crucial and then got to hold them.

I've wondered why there hasn't been more focus on this.
Short-sighted from AFL imo. Yes they get more money from the broadcasters now, but with less eyes there's less interest, essentially hurting their own product.
There won't be less availability of FTA games, just no Saturday FTA games.

There will also be no change to the number of games broadcast for free under the new deal, with an average of at least three live matches per round on the Seven Network and 7plus.

The major changes to how we watch footy in 2025 are:

  • An increase in Thursday night games (23 in 2025, up from 14 last year)
  • An increase in games on Sunday nights AEDT/AEST (Rounds 1-6, 8 & 12-14)

Might need an Upgrade with your Modem
Not necessarily, I have a good modem and get 110 mbps on NBN, and still get quite a bit of buffering.

I don't get any buffering on other streaming services.

Oh boo hoo, all this whinging about Kayo/ Fox footy and no free to air Saturday. Fine if you don’t want to pay for it don’t but that’s your choice so don’t complain about your own choice. Also it’s cheaper to watch kayo than it is for a club membership where you don’t see all the games unless you travel interstate, which makes it more expensive plus finals and grand finals. It’s how the world is going with the streaming, I love not having ads and having decent commentary rather than the crap you get from 7. Worth every cent.
I grew up in an era when they showed around 6-7 games a week on free to air TV. There is the danger this could down Rugby union, cricket and even soccer where Footy becomes a sport for the rich and less people become attracted and watch footy overall.

I have Kayo but where AFL used to be a sport for all, it could slow become a sport for the rich. (to watch and play)

I watched the replay last night and it kept going blurry.
Couldn’t work out if it was me or Kayo.

I think the same. Runs the risk of becoming a private school sport with the public schools all favouring soccer. It's more than just tv though. It's money and space. Kick to kick or jack in the pack or whatever you want to call it is dead, as 6 kids with a soccer ball can put together a much better game than that. You can only really play footy now as part of a club and it's not particularly cheap.

Yep 100% agree. It becomes a sport for specific niche. I lived in WA, when you go down after school and have a kick of the footy at the Oval. I could easily see a world where, kids grow up querying what a footy goal posts for or are. It would have been second nature for me to come down and have a kick and just have casual fun.

We can only judge this in about 3-5 years time but from my observations what we noticed about cricket is crowds generally dwindled out when the game was put specifically behind a paywall. And in cases of people generally didnt know matches were on in their own home time mainly due to lack of marketing.

Im in a fortunate position to have a job to pay for bills and at times pay for luxuries. But I do feel for the 10 to 17 year olds where some parents are potentially making a means to meet. Whilst I don't expect things in life to be free, kids then lose that ambition of seeing their heroes on a 'weekly' basis. I grew up watching my core players (again being based in WA) every week on free-to-air.

Sorry, when was there 6-7 games shown live FTA? It wasn’t that long ago that prime time games were shown on delay.

And how do the little poor kids watch premier league etc? Any kid with an internet connection can nerd out for free on footy until their heads cave in

Where did I say "poor kids." I don't think it's tv that is causing the shift but it can help to arrest it - basketball and soccer are much bigger global sports that get referenced continually on the international world of social media. Plus they're much easier sports to have a muck around game with. I haven't seen a single footy at my school this year. The kids are soccer and basketball mad. Footy needs to use all the tools it can - and free to air tv is one of those tools where AFL can have an advantage - they need to milk it.

i watched footy in the mid 90s. So not sure which era you started following footy.......

I’m looking for cheap Kayo.

Ok
So with Saturday football now exclusively on streaming, I need to sign up again.

I resent paying for footy on tv. I still feel entitled to watch it for free. It’s part of our Australian identity.

Kayo has sent me ZERO retention offers, possibly emboldened by the Saturday thing.

All I want is AFL. Couldn’t give a damn about the rest. Will cancel end of September.

Anyone got any coupons or ways to get it for less than $25/month?
It's not the only way. I watched in HD from Kuwait and the stream was sensational. Of course, it's not always so good, but if you can't bare to give Murdoch a single dollar of your hard earned, then plenty of people here can show you how.

There is an app where you pay 130 bucks for 12 months you get all subscription channels i.e Netflix apple TV foxtel kayo etc

My brother in law and a mate has it

Buffers occasionally I just cbf doing it

Maybe you haven't seen any footies at school because you have been on BigFooty?

A bit earlier than that. You may recall that a great deal of mid-90s prime time footy was on delay.
There was. Another significant thing was in a state like WA and SA, showing a local teams game was mandatory, so on the odd week , viewers would not be able to see certain teams.

Does this include Bein Sports, Stan Sports, Optus Sports...........it seems like more sports are being spread out. Remember a year where you could watch: EPL, A-League, AFL, NRL, Big Bash, Tennis (major tournaments), NBA all in one umbrella (Kayo). Seems like nowadays, sports are spread out which often costs more if you subscribe to alot.

It already is a private school sport.

80-85% of the players come from a private school background.

But the local primary schools don't play AFL any more as the school curriculum is more about diversity and inclusion and less about sport and recreation.

Kids don't do "kick to kick"at every opportunity the way we used to.

Cricket also very much now is a private school sport. I mean I look at the core of the WA state team and most of those guys are from the boy school association. Cricket being a slightly more difficult sport to set up in terms of facilities and all.

But I think the key indicator for me is, drive around your local public park and see what the young kids are doing. Im in Sydney now but you rarely see an AFL ball being kicked around.

Basketball and soccer are very much in the same boat for me. You can play it with a little bit of space .

That's been the the way for ages, but it's not because it's been like rugby union in Australia and only really played at private schools, it's because the private schools scour the local leagues and offer scholarships to the best players not in private schools.

It's got nothing to do with DEI - kids are simply more into soccer and basketball and they play that instead of kick to kick.
