I was hoping some of the uni students may be able to help out with a couple of questions regarding course placements etc. I know someone who missed out on a course she wanted and she complained that a number of the places in the course were taken up with positions paid for by footy clubs, overseas students etc.

1. Is it the case that positions within courses are taken up this way?

2. Any ideas on the number/percentage of spots taken up this way? I realise that it would vary depending on the course.

3. Does the ability to pay up front have any bearing on acceptance into a course?

Thanks in advance.

Courses have a certain number of places for HECS students, full fee paying students, and overseas students, IIRC.

The significant majority of places are HECS, although the Nelson reforms will change that.

I'm not sure what you mean by "paying up front". I'll make two interpretations. Firstly, being a HECS student and paying up front. If you pay a minimum of $500 for your semester fees, then you receive a 25% discount from your total HECS payment for that semester. The other interpretation: Being a full fee student. In this case, the entry requirements are much lower than with HECS.

Cheers. You'll have to excuse my ignorance a bit. I would have thought the majority of students are HECS paying. Are we heading towards a situation whereby the ability to pay cash up front is going to be a more important entry requirement than traditional entry scores. Perhaps that is already the case, I don't know. If so, that sucks and I better start saving some pennies.

As far as I know, you still need the score to be able to enter. Paying up front will only bring down the TER a couple of points. I could be wrong, but that is the impression that I got.

Other than that, I know St Kilda have a 'partnership' with Monash No wonder so many of their players have been/are there.

Yeah, there's a few of them at Deakin too. Seen Leigh Montagna and Nick Dal Santo around occasionally, and this semster I was in a tute with Leigh Fisher Top guy.

Anyone who is worried should just enroll at the University of Tasmania, they'll take anyone. In a lot of instances, you needen't have even matriculated.
