Let the facts tell the story
Wednesday, 8 August 2007
Essendon high performance manager John Quinn today hit back at suggestions the side was not fit enough and that Matthew Lloyd was too heavy.
This morning’s Herald-Sun ran a back page story with former Essendon runner Peter Power making the claims in a letter he wrote to the paper following the Bombers’ loss to Hawthorn.
Power, who was last involved with the Club more than 15 years ago, claimed "it is apparent that Essendon does not do enough hard, gut-running fitness training." He added that Essendon "generally get run over in the final quarter" and that Matthew Lloyd "should lose 5 – 6 kg of muscle as he appears to be too top heavy."
Quinn described the comments as wrong and plain ignorant.
"I’m not really sure who he is or his relationship with the Club but I think the supporters deserve to have some facts put in front of them," Quinn said.
"The only teams with a better last quarter record than Essendon this year are Sydney (12) and Hawthorn (14). Essendon has won 11 final quarters so far this year. The team outran last year’s Grand finalists - West Coast and Sydney - to win by a point."
Quinn was even more astounded by the suggestion Lloyd was top heavy.
"Matthew Lloyd weighs less today than the did the year he kicked 100 goals," Quinn said.
"He is also coming off an injury that took him out of the game for a year and I think a lot of people are forgetting that is the case. But he has worked exceptionally hard on his fitness and he is quicker, has better endurance and higher strength levels than any other time in his career.
"The fitness department of Essendon Football Club, will continue to do the job to the best of our ability and let those people who have some semblance of the facts, make judgements on that performance. Not the likes of people such as Peter Power."

Not much said about this episode one here as far as I can see. Solid response from Quinn and the club. I thought Power used to be fitness manager not just a runner although I may be mistaken. I gotta hand it to Quinn this year in turning around our last quarter results. That was a shocking area last year.
