CARLTON forward Brad Fisher will return to the field in the VFL this weekend just 14 weeks after having LARS surgery on his knee.
But the battle-scarred Blues are treading lightly ahead of four more tough rounds before their mid-season break.
A handful of loyal Blues fans who turned up to watch an open training session today had to be content with precious few players stepping out on the track.
Coming off a bruising 50-point loss to Hawthorn, most of the senior list confined themselves to the gym as they prepare for Sunday's match against West Coast at Etihad Stadium.
"It's usually a pretty light day anyway,'' general manager of football operations Steven Icke said to explain most of the senior list staying off the track.
"We're just mindful of managing a few blokes over a pretty tough month.

"The Hawthorn game was physical, we had a six-day break and a trip to Port Adelaide before that and after this week two more six-day breaks ahead.
"Only a few guys went out for a light run and they'll step it up a little later in the week.''
The Blues also hope to bolster their stocks with Andrew Walker (collarbone) and Shaun Grigg expected to return. Ryan Houlihan (hamstring) also will play if he gets through a fitness test later in the week.
Fisher, 26, partially tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the opening NAB Cup match against Sydney on February 20 -- just 95 days ago.
"He should play in the VFL this week this week, which is great news,'' Icke said.
Fisher follows in the successful footsteps of Swan Nick Malceski and Port's David Rodan, who both made similarly swift and successful comebacks after LARS surgery.
After the Eagles this week Carlton meets Melbourne at the MCG, North Melbourne at Etihad six days later and then Fremantle at the same venue on June 19 before having a welcome 12-day breather before tackling the second half of the season.

Brad Fisher - may return for Round 9. Ok then.

Playing VFL this week, not far off
They had that round 9 text in there from when he first did the injury and haven't updated it or some reason, but thats pretty accurate i thought.

The Icke Shuffle?

McLean's improving outlook is well-timed as the club looks to rebound from a heavy loss to Hawthorn, with Brad Fisher and Andrew Walker also making bold bids to return to the senior side in the coming weeks.
"McLean was a chance to play last week," Blues' football manager Steven Icke said on Tuesday.
"But we just held him over for another week and if he gets through all the training this week then he's up for selection.
..
Walker was initially ruled out for seven weeks after he broke his collarbone against Geelong in round five. His return would be well ahead of schedule, but surgery to insert a plate onto the bone has sped the process considerably.
He has a history of shoulder problems, which Icke said the club was mindful of, but his superior fitness had put him in a position to press for selection.
"I think if he's right to go [physically] and he's confident and our medical staff pass him [he'll play]," he said.
"From a conditioning point of view he's not lost any of his fitness. He's a great aerobic athlete so we won't have a concern about his fitness levels - it will be whether he can sustain the physical contact to play.
"We'll do a full battery of tests to make sure that both he and us are convinced that he's ready to go. We won't pick him unless he's right to play."
...
Fisher's good news is bad news for rookie defender Simon White, who not only suffered a knee injury at the weekend, but also comes off the senior list to accommodate Fisher.
Ryan Houlihan is set to resume from a hamstring strain, but Chris Yarran (thigh) is unlikely according to Icke and Kane Lucas will definitely miss this week's clash with West Coast.
I think one of either lachie or irish will need to go back to line up on kennedy this week, he will be too quick and strong for thornton.
I would just about be tempted to play thornton forward this week and see what he can offer. He is a pretty good mark and a good enough kick.
I was thinking Thornton could go to Lynch and they could crab walk there way around the ground. .. That leaves Jammo free to go to Kennedy. ..
Can AJ go with Le Cras? He seems like a good fit but Le Cras plays pretty tool and may require JR?
Gotta start Irish and Hendo in the forward line and try to get on top early. ..
