I went for a job interview and a restaurant it was a chinese restaurant.

they told me straight away sorry we only interview people are of same ethnic.
this is bullcrap.

there racist anyone else had any simular stories like this?

when i was in grade 3 a kid my age who was of asian ethnic told me to go back to south australia you crow eater and i said who don't you go back to where you came from.

and this got me in so much s$$$ i got suspended for 2 days and detention that is bullcrap. i was 8 geez
yep im a racist for sticking up for myself

oh and for it i couldn't play cricket or football for my school which recked my cricket career

I could bowl offspin when i was 8, then when i was 11 i had a really good leg spinner, but a day came were i was showing of and i told everyone to come and see me bowl, then i lost it, i couldnt bowl my legspinner and my action was shot.

That fair enough - hiring a non chinese is bad for business. People want to go to chinese restaurant that feel authentic.

They probably didn't hire you because you're semi-literate. Don't get down on that - lots of semi-literate people are unemployed. And Bunsen's half right - hiring an illegal idiot who might well be a relative is cheaper than hiring an idiot who'll command minimum wage.

Chinese people can be very racist. I lived in Taiwan for a couple of years and on the whole loved it. However there were a few times when the racism was obvious. Quite often if I sat next to a Chinese person on the subway or at the movies they would get up and move.

To me, it's not fair enough. I'm of Chinese descent, I came from Hong Kong in 1990. If this restaurant is only hiring people of Asian ethnicity for the job, then that is clearly racism, by the textbook definition. There is such a defense as "positive action", I believe (it's been a few years since I've seen a law textbook) where under certain circumstances, organisations are allowed to specify the race and/or gender of the person that they wish to hire. I'll have to do a little more research on that when I have the time.

In Victoria, it's unlawful to treat a person seeking employment less favourably on the basis of race than others in the same or similar circumstances.

There are some limited exceptions in the legislation around things like hiring a person for domestic or personal services, in relation to genuine occupational requirements (such as dramatic or artistic performance, entertainment or modelling work, etc), or if the employer employs no more than five people including the applicant.

If an employer thinks it has a good reason to specify things like age/race/gender, to positively discriminate, if you like, then it needs to apply to VCAT for an exemption. Otherwise, it's acted unlawfully.

So basically, the thread-starter could have brought a claim for race discrimination against the restaurant. If he could be bothered.

I couldn't play for my school until I reached Grade 4, prior to that I played in a Junior football league, why didn't you apply for Junior football? Surely there would have been a league for you to join?

I really didn't think employers were allowed to tell a person they were not hired because of race, due to it being considered "discrimination" You will find that in ever country there is a decent amount of racism, in fact I can tell you a story of some migrants here that are racist towards each other.

All are from the same place in Africa, but they are in their own little groups and will not allow others in and they verbally abuse anyone not in with that crowd. I have seen racism in both white and non-white people.

I remember seeing a kid from South Korea and another from Thailand get into a racial fight once at school, the only thing that made it amusing was the fact they were both shouting the same taunts bock and forth. Not that racial abuse is at all amusing it's just a bit funny watching two people sharing the same taunts at each other.

Most authentic chinese restaurants you go to, all the staff speak chinese except when speaking to the customers. That could have been an issue. No point working in a kitchen where you can't understand what is going on - it would be chaos.

its funny where the issue of racism is raised it is usually only being pointed at to muslims or those of lebanese descent whereas there are other races out there whom are far more racist and discriminative. every race has racism and its a horrible disease. the issue with some asian joints not employing anyone not asian has been happening since they immigrated here but they arent the only ones.

Sounds like that Seinfeld episode where Elaine went to this place to get pedicure and the Vietnamese runners of the place were mocking her in their language. So then she was telling the story and apparently George's dad spoke the language so he went along and they started mocking again and he caught them out.

He also refused to take off his shoes due to a foot odour and the woman he dated when over in Vietnam was there...good episode.

Uhhh... you have heard of playing cricket for a club havn't you? I'm sure if you have the talent of Shane Warne it wouldn't be that hard to move up in the ranks without the experience of playing Primary School cricket in Grade 3

I'm pretty sure that over here in the UK, at least, there is a loophole in the equal opportunities laws for restaurants, to give them the right to discriminate in favour of people from the culture that they are serving the traditional food of.
