There is no need for pride at all. It isnt your achievement that you were born to black ethnic people white ethnic or a ethnic that has more plenty of tones.

Wasn't sure whether to put this in here or the Aussie day thread, but I'll in here so I don't get carded.

Wrote a status on facebook today, and the phrase "Invasion Day" was mentioned, and "Australia Day" was not. Facebook however decided to group it in with everyone elses Australia Day posts. WTF?

It's hard to get around the fact that it is the date Australia was effectively invaded. How much significance you place on that event is up to you, but it is that. I go back 5 generations in Australia. I had 5 relatives (on both sides) killed at Anzac cove. Another was killed at the Somme. My lineage almost traces back to that damn fleet. I can completely see why that date is a problem for some, and, perhaps, why I am completely ambivalent towards Australia Day.

My status was about the aboriginals flag burning and what not, and it was probably dumbed down a bit for facebook audience. Could be considered racist in nature, but I'll wear it.

"Are the aboriginals in this country every gonna stop playing the victim? If you don't like it, move to Arnhem Land and live without the poisons of the white man like electricity, hospital, mobile phones and VB.

Invasion Day. What a joke. Since aboriginals earned the right to vote and land rights, the tent embassy is no longer relevant."

It got me the most likes for ages, and from some aborginal and part aborginal mates of mine which helped me feel like it was worthwhile.

bullshit.

i'm not overly militant on either side, fairly apathetic towards the whole issue really.
i don't subscribe to the whole invasion day crap and as far as having a tent city for 40 years, well **** me even they could've got a job in that time.
what i don't agree with is the overtly w***erish display of patriotism from ****ing bogans on this day of the year. ffs, 16 and 17 year old kids draped in the australian flag while drinking breezers, carrying on like they built this country, give me a ****ing break. some of these (you) little shits need to pull your heads in and have respect for anyone with more life experience.

RACISM The most inappropriately used word on BF.

That is one of the most offensive, patronising and thoroughly misguided things I've read on this board for a long time. "earned the right to vote' did you even think before you typed those words?

Hardly. It was very impulsive, since I had just finished work dealing with some people of aboriginal descent that still carry on like they are second class citizens but do nothing constructive about it (hence the VB remark). But in my head it sounded better than "given the right to vote".

History suggests that when one group is suppressed for significant periods of time, a change in attitude by these people takes many decades (demonstrated by many countries in Africa) and they often expect improved lives to be handed to them on a platter. Even in South Africa, where the majority of the population is African (black) or coloured, you are generally far better off being white than African, coloured, or even of Indian descent, nearly 18 years since the first democratic election. Of course this is mostly through white financial power during apartheid, but some of this is because many Africans do not reach their full potential, partly because many do not know how to gain a high level of education because none of their family has done so. Instead a quicker and easier money-making option is turning to crime or drugs, more specifically nowadays, tik. Without myself having great knowledge on the social implications, one could suggest that this may still be the case with Indigenous Australians.

You only have to see the influence previous generations play in determining what one becomes. For example, if I selected 100 of my distant and close relatives, probably 2 would have gone to University, and relatively few more to Years 11 and 12. Probably because it isn't/wasn't deemed important.

On a side note, nah, troll is the most inappropriately used word on BF.
