Yeah I got a copy through work, it's a bit 'meh'. No New Race or Aloha Steve and Danno. There is What Gives but the band sounds a bit half arsed and Rob Younger sounds old (he didn't age well at all). I reminds me of the really poor live album The Saints put out last year. Just go back to your jobs as doctors or animators or whatever you do now lads.

i saw them on the Australian leg of this tour and was a bit taken a back by the quality of the recording. They sounded much better in Australia. Naturally I bought the CD though, as it's my life's work to own everything Radio Birdman do:D
I saw The New Christs two or three months back, and have heard a copy of live work he's done this year in Europe with some French musos and believe me Rob Younger still rocks fine live, so I think the CD was an off night.

Just indulge in everything that the New Christs release instead. Last year's "Gloria" is brilliant.

Only know the New Christs from the Do The Pop and Born Out of Time Compilations. Might have to check out Gloria.

Tend to agree with Mr Bojangles that Live in Texas is nothing special, but not the worst either. I like the covers.

Nothing has ever come close to seeing Birdman live at Nottingham Rock City in 2003.

Saw them a few years ago at Beck's veranda Perth Concert Hall.
Pale imitation of a former great band. Must have been an off night for them, mainly interested in signing poster's and selling T-Shirt's. Even though Deniz Tek was on the money. Excellent guitar work.

While you're at it, make sure you grab "Divine Rites" (1987-ish), "Distemper" (1989-ish) and "Lower Yourself" (1997-ish) - the latter two are definitely in my Top 10 Oz albums of all time. All three of these albums are even better than "Gloria" IMO. Just cannot get sick of them ... even after 20+ years of high rotation.

I'm hearing ya'. The gig they did with Wayne Kramer and the Powdermonkeys as supports back in the late 90's at The Palace was feckin' amazing.

Was there too. Very average, The Volcanics- were way better, followed them even tho Birdman was the headline. Signing while they(Volcanics) played was just lame.

Thanks Ghost,

I will invest in these albums soon. Always been meaning to buy a copy of Distemper but never got around to it, so look forward to listening over the summer break hopefully.

That 96 gig rates in one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Could have been hotter though :p What was the temp inside the palace that night 50 degrees?

Charlie Owen still rates his playing on Distemper as some of his finest work.......and he's not wrong.

I reckon we might have had this conversation somewhere before Leapster, but Timmy Hemmensley's refusal to stop playing that night despite having the curtains drawn on him and whilst the bouncers were having kittens was truly a glorious rock'n'roll moment.

And yep, probably in my top handful of all time too.

Stunning. Charlie's work on "The Burning of Rome" is a guitar masterpiece.

In fact, I'm damn well gonna go and listen to it now.

The Ghost is very wise; all-seeing.

Saw them in 2007, wouldn't bother again.

Radio's Appear as mentioned, is still your friend.

Deniz Tek is releasing a new compilation through Citadel Records in March.

Playing the Espy on April 2.

He will also be appearing on the Australian Mood on RRR sometime this month.

New Radio Birdman box set in the works too.

I don't reckon the album's as bad as some are making here. Pretty stripped back and raw - cool covers of the Kinks, the Who and Blue Oyster Cult. By no means essential but still worth checking out.

As for the New Christs, I've found their later stuff a bit too much - in terms of the best songs on their albums tend to get lost amongst some filler - an unfortunate side effect of the digital age. Distemper is a full-on classic though and in my top five albums of the 1980s.

Also really like the Visitors, Tek's first post-Birdman project. More Doors/Blue Oyster Cult in sound (eg more keyboards). More moody than full-on.

So which of Tek's solo work is the best?

His stuff on the Citadel compilation or his stuff post Citadel?

Anyone going on the 2nd April?

The Outside album was great and I think that was on Red Eye. Kent Steedman from the Celibate Rifles was on second guitar, Pip Hoyle from Birdman on keyboards, Nik Reith from the Rifles on drums and Jim Dickson (New Christs, Barracudas, Passengers, etc) on bass.

I do intend to go on the 2nd but we need to sort out a babysitter (my missus is a huge Birdman fan).

What he said! Outside is great. Dozen on Ice should be an all time oz (alt) rock classic. I played that track over and over when I first got it.
Also saw that tour with the backing band that Rusty mentioned. Best I've seen Tek play without Birdman (and that includes the Visitors gig a couple of years back, and that was great).
