Half the team will come up to me and ask what it was missing, I usually just say leg.

I play low level cricket in Adelaide and we umpire ourselves in the Cs and Ds. Given that, it's rare to see an LBW that isn't dead plum.

If the bowler is bowling wide on the crease it's the easiest not out ever, as it is with any batsman batting out of his crease. I usually just say missing leg as well, or that there 'might have been a bit of bat i'm not sure'.

You'll get some teams that will just go up like it's a dead certainty at every half shout and I love saying not out to those sorts of assholes.

Interestingly, I always walk when playing those grades (because I don't want my teammate to look like a cheat) but have never walked in my life while playing with a paid umpire. I figure you guys should earn your money :)

How did you get into it, I'd love to become an umpire even though I've never played haha
Just google your local league/association and add umpiring at the end. In my case it would be NWMCA umpiring. The top result was a link to the commitees emails etc. and I just emailed one of them asking to join.

I'm half way through getting my Level 1 Umpires certificate. I have done the practical part, I'm just waiting to hear back from Cricket Australia(?) about doing the online part.

You'll also need a Working with Children card. Something I've done shit all about.

Probably my one of my favourite parts of this whole experience was meeting Merv Hughes last night. He spoke to the group of us about how he dealt with umpires, Australian and Victorian selection, and being an Australian cricketer.

About your Working With Children's Check, if it's the same here in NSW, it's free if you're a volunteer (which you are). If you needed it as a full time job (like a child care worker or teacher) it's $80 for the full thing. You can apply for it online and it takes about an hour

i've done the online part but not the practical because Darrell(?) gave me the wrong date in the email he sent out.

i didn't meet Merv from umpiring, but i played against his son in juniors last year, he came across as a massive flog.

Did junior umpires also get an email about upfront payment before games?
lolno?
must have been some teams dodging payment and having some bevs after the game, but the team managers in juniors are pretty good, they make sure we get paid.

When I used to play, we never had professional umpires, it was all umpired by volunteers. The only time I had a professional umpire was my U14 Grand Final, however my U12 GF was not professionally umpired.

NWMCA Seniors has 11 or so grades with 4 games in each grade each week. The top division needs 2 umpires per game. This all means lower grades (8 and beyond) are usually self umpired.

VTCA only has one umpire even for top tiered games, besides finals, which i believe all games have both.

We do not need to pay tax on what we earn, as umpiring is considered a hobby and not a full time job.

I know it can be done online, just can never be bothered.

Yes, it's Darrell. I was at the pratical session at the start of the season.

I've actually met Merv a few times. I used to play footy with his oldest son.

Darrell was saying that done umpires had to wait up to 40 minutes after the game to be paid. And in some cases, the club had to go to the bank to get the money. We have been told that we don't have to start the game until we are paid, and if one team hasn't paid before the 30min forfeit deadline, the game is awarded to the side that has paid.

i usually don't get paid until after the game, but if i take them off for rain i'll take money as soon as we're off in case it's called off and they just leave.

I started a retail job this week, and got abused by a customer on my first day of training. People are, in general, shit.
Sorry, but I think my story will outdo general abuse.

I was working at KFC earlier this year in Canberra and I had the responsibility to get the customers into seperate row (which is uncommon) in a foodcourt. So I had to leave my station walk around to the customer side of the stall. So once I've organised these people into four rows, I get back to my station and this girl that was originally in my row, but later moved says to me, in front of co-workers, my boss, and other costumers 'Imma cut you'.

I did almost 7 years in retail. 99% of people are fine. You just get the odd arseh*le who thinks he or she can abuse you because your job is customer service.

I was as nice as I could be to frustrating customers all the time, but if they ever crossed the line into actual abuse (called me or another staff member a name etc) then I went to town. It's pretty satisfying calling a customer a ****wit and telling them to get the **** out of your shop because you aren't serving them.

They sometimes complain but if they've been genuinely abusive your manager should always back you up.

It's times like this where retail workers should be able to tell customers to go **** themselves with no fear of retribution or backlash.

When u playin as Derby in career mode and u 2-1 up against Chelsea til the 90th+164 minute and Oscar scores a header which bounces off the posts like 6 times before going in

Then u playin against Cardiff and cruising at 2-0 up and they turn into Barcalona at the 80th minute and score two quickfire goals like its Neymar-Messi-Suarez

Yeah I'm sitting like 16th on the table didn't need those 6 points anyway, FIFA.
