This article is about the author's preferred Western Australian state team from 1976-86, including reasons given for many of the choices and an interesting, controversial selection of coach - Mal Brown rather than John Todd, Haydn Bunton Junior or Ken Armstrong. Also interesting is that he excludes players who played one or more VFL/AFL games:

1922 grand final Fitzroy v Collingwood

This being the game mentioned in the last episode of Jack Irish
Fitzroy kicked 6 goals in third quarter

Ahh Le Freake Freake out!
“The sensation of the match came early in the third quarter, after the teams
had rested for more than half an hour. Fitzroy kicked a goal within five seconds, had
three goals in about six minutes and seemed to be fairly streaming away with the match.

It was a wonderful burst of success, and it won the match. From the bounce of
the ball Gale passed it to Freake, who sent it spinning through for fourth goal and
a point ahead. After a short struggle Donellan passed the ball up to the forward
lines. Here Freake again marked, and with an exactly similar kick got fifth goal.

Fitzroy had taken complete command of the game. Next Fergie drove it up to Parratt
who made a very nice shot, but got a point only. They were threatening again, when
a mark by Brown kept them off for an instant. Then McCracken hit the ball from the
crush straight to Fergie, who snapped their sixth goal. Considering how evenly the
sides had battled to that point it was an amazing outbust”
- The Argus 16.10

" They began with a goal to Freake five seconds from the start of the second half
Freake quickly got another and Fergie added the third after six minutes of play
Collingwood fought back well but scoring was even for the rest of the match
and the Maroons eventually proved victorious by thirteen points
Collingwood however threw the game away in the last term kicking two goals
seven some of the misses being easy shots "

Sound dramatic. Does this place still exist?

Found some pictures of the old Gaffney Creek ground.

It is indeed pear-shaped and crammed in between the former hotel and the creek.

I was only 8 or 10 years old when he played but I remember him as a wiry, skinny, very tough halfback flanker. He was relatively tall for that position, fast and agile and had a great mark on him.

Other WAFL fans can probably add more opinions.

Careful, it's strong stuff....

"Owed" To Collingwood by J.O Smith

They're sanguine - very,
That the flag of this year's fight
Will float o'er the banks of Merri,
Crossed with bars of black and white.
We have got a strong impression
That the boys in red and blue
Have learnt a useful lesson
And they've learnt it most from you.
There's a little score to settle
That has long been overdue;
You have got us on our mettle,
And we'll square accounts with you.

The Sandridge footy club played a senior team for two seasons in the Footscray District league between 1991 and 1992. By their second year, the club was already in debt and the league wanted $3000 dollars payed to them by the middle of June.

The club were running out of options as payment was due soon, so two days before the deadline, they tried raising funds through illegal gambling at a hotel in Port Melbourne. Instead of raising the money, they raised suspicion and the cops nabbed a hundred of them.

Needless to say, the club didn't raise the money and ended up disappearing by the end of the year.

Wonder how many were aware of the "magazines and newsletters" section on Trove.

Came across this 1940 article about Marcus Whelan getting ready for a new season in the famous illustrated magazine "Pix":

Good stuff, have been going through Trove newspapers for years and had no idea about this.

No doubt you've heard about the infamous fake match between Geelong and St. Kilda's reserves sides back in 1945. However, recent research suggests that the match did in fact happen. Whether or not it did, what we do know is that an actual fake match got caught 36 years later.

It's early August of 1981 on a crappy day in Adelaide. It'd been raining heavily for most of the week and God had dumped another load on top of St. Ignatius College in Adelaide's east. The home side, Old Ignatians C, get to the ground and wait, but by the time the game is due to start, only twelve players from the Scotch OC C side have turned up and a forfeit win for the Ignatians looks all but certain.

Well, it's the eighth division of the South Australian Amateur Football League. Every side in it, apart from the newly-formed and unbeaten Croydon, is merely a secondary side to their higher-up senior squads. Old Scotch's senior team is mid-table in A1, while Old Ignatians are tearing it up at the top of the A4 table. It's not like many people are going to turn up to watch the leftovers battle it out on a cold, wet afternoon. Scotch OC C would have to forfeit, pay a fine to the league, and move on.

Or they could just not pay.

With full cooperation from both coaches, the umpires, and (I suspect a few dozen) people in attendance, the group decides that their money is better off spent at the nearby hotel where they can spend the afternoon warm, dry, and drinking beers. Then, they fixed a fake score: Old Ignatians won, kicking 18.17.125 to Scotch OC C's dismal 10.7.67, a result that would give the Ignatians the same percentage boost as a forfeit. Fake teamsheets, fake goalscorers, and fake umpire's votes were all filled in. The Old Ignatians phoned the score over to the Sunday Mail, and the umpire sent off his handiwork to the SAAFL. And that was that. No harm, no foul.

For two weeks, the league bought it. And then somebody pulled some threads and the whole thing fell apart.

Needless to say, the league was pretty pissed. As soon as the truth was uncovered, both club's captain-coaches were suspended until July 1982. The league then fined both clubs $50 and stripped them of their records up until the day of the non-game. Scotch OC C lost all their remaining three games, while Old Ignatians C managed an even one win, one draw (with Brighton High OS C) and one loss. The umpire was ordered to show up at the tribunal, but ended up doing a runner. With no chance of staying up, both clubs dropped down a division. They would meet two years later in the A9 Grand Final of 1983, which Scotch OC C won 18.8.116 to 14.6.90.

On a side note, Croydon went on a 35 game winning streak, but after losing their first ever game in A7 late in 1982, the club must've done something bad, because the league suspended them and they never came back.

1. Old Iggies oval would be a foot deep in water in the forward 50 arc at one end - and that was with a light sprinkle so I can see why if it bucketed down

2. Croydon must have merged with West Croydon because 1983 saw a West Croydon win the Div 7 flag
