I was recently sent a PM (from an opposition supporter) asking me to rank the Adelaide Crows players from best to worst. I thought it might also make for an interesting off-season discussion, seeing as there's not a lot else happening on the board right now.
I'll let you lot decide for yourself what constitutes "best to worst". My own rankings differ significantly from the club's (as revealed by the Club Champion voting). Some of it is based on potential, some of it is based on recent performance, some of it is based on where I expect them to be in 2009.
Here's the list I sent back:
1. Nathan Bock * clear #1
2. Scott Thompson
3. Jason Porplyzia
4. Tyson Edwards
5. Ben Rutten
6. Nathan Van Berlo
7. Ivan Maric
8. Bernie Vince
9. Andrew McLeod
10. David Mackay
11. Simon Goodwin
12. Graham Johncock
13. Michael Doughty
14. Robert Shirley
15. Chris Knights
16. Scott Stevens
17. Brent Reilly
18. Jonathon Griffin
19. Brad Symes
20. Brad Moran
21. Kurt Tippett
22. Taylor Walker
23. Nick Gill
24. Richard Douglas
25. Trent Hentschel * due to long term injury
26. Brett Burton * due to long term injury
27. Andy Otten
28. Patrick Dangerfield
29. Aaron Kite
30. Jared Petrenko
31. Greg Gallman
32. Jarrhan Jacky
33. Myke Cook
34. James Sellar
35. James Moss
36. Brodie Martin
37. Tony Armstrong
Bock & Thompson were a clear #1 and #2 for me. Bock won the club champion and our Player of the Year voting. He was our only AA player this year. No surprise that he's #1. Despite his poor performance in the final, Thompson is still our #1 midfielder and as such he's definitely the #2 ranked player at the club for me.
Looking down the lower end of the list, Armstrong is last because he's the only remaining player on our list who is yet to make his SANFL league debut.
Macca & Goody are a lot lower than people will expect. This is because they had poor seasons in 2008, albeit affected by injury. I'm almost certain that 2009 will be the end for both of them and I'm just hoping that they will both go out in style, not having gone one year too many as Nigel Smart did before them.
The group from 13-19 was hard to split. You could easily shuffle them around in virtually any order and I wouldn't argue the toss.
Some are going to be upset that I have Moran ahead of Tippett. Sorry, but that's the way I see it. Moran's performances late in the season, particularly his game against Carlton, far exceeded anything I saw from Tippett last year. There are strong parallels between these two players, both coming late to the game having grown up playing other sports (Rugby, Soccer & Basketball), both are around the same age (only 4 months difference). For all that, Moran seems to be considerably further developed than Tippett which is why I ranked him higher.
So, feel free to dissect my list or make your own.
