Ranking the draftees

[Kildonan]

I have decided that in order to do a mock draft, I would be best served ranking the draftees.
Rather than make it overcomplicated, I am dividing them into Talls, Mediums and Smalls.

Hmm... good idea to sort them by height/position..

Irrespective of the player, what sort of height / position should we recruit with pick 9 and pick 27?

I guess with all the hype about our first pick, nobody has really raised a fuss over st kilda's 2nd and 4th round pick?

I think the first pick should be for midfield.

If you see above, you'll note that Harvey and Thompson are likely to retire after 2007 season. Blind Freddy can see that the 180-185 cm height one is the most impacted. With X Clarke still give a consistent 22 games a seaon and Birss being an unknown at the moment, its an area in need of critical replenishment. Recruiting in that height range is a priority in my opinion. Taking the running / endurance type runners is important given the player's history of running out of legs at critical junctures.

With pick 27, st kilda should take a defender. Again, no surprises here, Ross Lyon has also mentioned needing another defender, and I defnitely believe there's a need for someone to do the work on gorrillas. Many fail to notice that 2006 was the best ever injury wise for st kilda's defense. In 2004, 2005, at times 3-4 1st choice defenders not playing. In 2006, however, all were available except for Maguire's injury late into the season. I think Hudgton has been outstanding playing out of his division. Penny's loss was huge, and despite that the team's performance has been more than admirable. Sam Gilbert might start getting some more game time towards the end of 2007 (as a possible replacement for hudgeton on his retirement), but more as a 3rd tall initially. This still means a defender needs to be nurthered to be the #1 full back for the next 2-3 years.

Of course, having couple of tall rookies for ruck positions should be good as well.

I'm going to redo my mock draft with the updated draft picks.

I find that this is easier for me by breaking up players into general categories and determining a rough order within these categories.

Then I try and anticipate the different clubs needs.

I then simply run through the lists for each clubs' picks.

Well.. I was 50% close... we did pick up two players in the 180-185 cm range with our first two picks...

I am guessing Jarryd Allen is our new "3rd tall" defender.
