(Just posted this on my blog and wanted some St Kilda supporter feedback. That and I am really angry.)

Football has made me angry this year. Actually, to be more precise, the AFL has made me angry the last two seasons.

Firstly was Siren-gate. Now I'll be the first to admit that if everyone does their jobs properly, then Fremantle win that game. But the laws of the game state that the umpire is the sole adjudicator of the finish of a game. Discipline the umpire but adhere to the letter of the law.

Leigh Matthews was reported for belting someone with a clenched left fist in the 1976 Grand Final. He got off because he belted him with a clenched right fist. This sort of strict adherence to "as written" law has been abandoned by an AFL Commission eager to be seen to be writing the wrongs of the past, rather than providing certainty and avoiding dangerous precedents. But what do you expect from a Commission that contains Bill Kelty, Andrew Demetriou, Sam Mostyn & new Chairman of the Commission Mike Fitzpatrick, all card-carrying members of the Australian Labor Party.

Then came numerous incidents involving Steven Baker. Last year it was unsuccessfully hitting a 203cm, 105kg ruckman. This year it was standing still maliciously. Baker, deprived the ability to plead guilty and reduce his plea, won't play again until Round 6, 2008. Ben Johnson, who could have easily killed Daniel Bell, will return much earlier.

Only two St Kilda defenders have ever made AFL All-Australian teams, and both of those were half-back flankers (David Grant & Austinn Jones). No Max Hudghton (in 2006), no Matt Maguire (in 2005), no Justin Peckett (in 1997), no Matthew Young (in 1999), no Jason Gram (in 2006). This year no Sam Fisher, who was omitted behind Darren Milburn, Matthew Egan, Dustin Fletcher, and the greatest and most successful hack in the competition, Darren Glass.

To compound my anger, Nick Riewoldt missed out on a spot to Cameron Mooney. On what planet does Cameron Mooney get selected for anything ahead of Nick Riewoldt, except for maybe an anger management class? Mooney has benefitted from a top notch Geelong midfield, while Riewoldt had to make do with a unadventurous St Kilda side that butchered the ball and generally made Riewoldt's life tough. Still Riewoldt managed five more possessions a game. But then again, the All-Australian selectors almost just selected the Geelong team.

To top it off, Stephen McBurney was named All-Australian umpire, which is kind of like naming OJ Simpson Husband of the Year. McBurney is simply the worst of the new breed of umpires: a chatterbox who never says anything helpful to the players, and has always umpired as if he has no appreciation of how hard it is to play football. He is also the leader whenever Jeff Geischen and Rowan Sawers issue instructions about new interpretations. McBurney has probably paid more "dragging-it-in" holding the ball decisions than anyone in the history of the planet.

Anyway, the only solace I am receiving at the moment is the knowledge that come Friday night none of this will matter, and Geelong and Collingwood will be knocking chunks off each other to become the first Victorian team into a Grand Final in four years.

Hahaha, very good points Punter. I believe the only reason they select the All Australian Team is so journos like Mike Sheahan, Patrick Smith, etc have something to write 10 articles about. It also allows Kevin Bartlett to run his mouth about the selections. I am flabbergasted that a player like Steve Johnson made the side after only playing 15 games. Now correct me if I am wrong but I believe Jonathan Brown played roughly 14 games last year and in most people's eyes he was BOG in nearly all of them and yet the reason for his omission was because he hadn't played enough games. I thought Sammy Fisher was pretty unlucky, but unfortunately it appears spots are picked on reputation instead of facts, that's the only way I can fathom that B Lade and not H McIntosh was selected.

Yes S McBurney is just one of those umpires who is a pathetic weed of a man! He has a head like a chewed mintie and I am very sure he sleeps with the light on, with his whistle under the pillow.

Keep the faith Punter, it's frustrating times but we'll be right. I think we'd all agree that man for man our side is the better than the Roos, so if we all get on the same page and get a pre season into some of our players...we'll be right for a good year next year! Get up em Sainters!!!!!!

As much as Geelong have dominated this season, i'm pretty sure if you lined all the players in league up againts the schoolyard fence then Riewoldt would be picked before mooney based on this years form, and I don't think you would pick 4 or whatever Geelong Midfielders before taking say a Luke Hodge, pretty average I think.

Oh i am FUMING Punter, I have been away on a school camp monday and most of today, with no ability to find out the AA team, and i was dumbstruck to return to Melbourne today to find out Roo and Fish have missed out.

You reflect my veiws exactly about the 07 AA team. I can not belive it! once again the selectors play favorites and pick, not who has the best season in 07, but that which they like the most. Eg, Mooney and Steve Johnson, who missed 6 games at the start of the year, if some one was injured for that lenght of time, they would imediatly be discounted from the team!

PS, I want KB off the selection panel, he is old and has no grasp on modern football!

Sorry to butt in here but why complain about the umpires all the time? You mightn't think that they aren't very good, but that just shows that you don't understand the rules and want to blame the umpires all the time for doing their job.
You might be angry but really keep the anger at your club for not playing proper footy. You do realise that your team played shithouse footy this year. You just gotta hope that they don't play crap next season. And no it isn't because of the umpiring. It is because of the undiscipline things that your players do. They give away free kicks, get reported, and do some stupid things away from footy. Even your club's board seem to be infighting all the time. Court cases after court cases.

Best of luck next year mate

We looked pretty good when we humiliated you at the 'Dome. You were a couple of Buddy junk-time goals away from a proper hiding. Back to your cave.

re-read what he said d**k head, he wasn't saying oh, woe is st kilda, the umpires robbed us, he said Stephen McBurney was a muppet, nothing about st kilda been robbed by the umpires. learn to read W****R

I agree Punter, some of the All Australian selections were amazing. I can't understand how nine Geelong players were slected, yet the Essendon (2000) and the lions three flags never had more than five players.
