They are shit because Bono is a w***er and all their songs sound the same...apparently . Yep I'm convinced.

Record amount of Grammy awards, hit after hit for 30 years, heavily influencing other highly rated bands such as The Killers, Coldplay & Keane, selling out stadiums in minutes says they are NOT shit.

The Spice Girls will sell out every concert on this tour in seconds, by your logic that means they're unbelieveably awesome.

Not my logic champ!

But if a performer was shit, would they get a record deal? Would they sell out concerts? Would they have number 1 albums and singles?

If they were shit, what would they have?
Nothing, of course!!!

And U2 are arguably the biggest rock band in the world.
So how can they be shit?

The Spice girls are NOT for me, but does that make them shit?

Your logic sucks!!!

As a slick marketing gimmick aimed at 8-13 year old girls? No.

As a talented group? Yes. If you've ever listened to their stuff it is of poor quality. Ever noticed they only have 2 recognisable choruses? And ever listened to those songs in full? They're not even well written. They have 2 catchy choruses and the rest is based on 25 year old doing silly dances in silly clothing.

U2 are great but just because they sell a lot of records and make millions is not what makes them so. Never bring that up as an argument because for every U2 there's a Britney Spears (who used to at least, sell millions etc).

U2 have a very distinct style of music that means they stand out, however, people fall into the trap of thinking all their music is the same.

They have a lot of veriety, anyone who has listened to the fly, beautiful day and mofo will undertsnad that.

They don't rely on power chords but melodies, and while that Bill Bailey thing does send them up accurately, their sounds are very unique and fantastic, and anyone who's seen them live would know that their live performances are exceptional.

Ok, what criteria do you use to measure a bands credibility?

Originality? Tick
Commerical success? Tick
Distinct sound? Tick
Skill? Depends on your opinion ie. Edge relies on pedals alot, Larry and Adam aren't great, Bono has a good voice
Recognisability? Tick
Live shows? Tick
Entertaining? Tick
Longevity? Tick

Anything else?

You obviously haven't heard him sing live before

singing ability doesnt seem to carry much clout these days with the majority of popular rock bands using monotone and speaking voices (arctic monkeys, interpol, killers) and while they may be decent singers it's more the swagger they do it with that qualifies them as good singers.Bono is easily better than most as far as depth in in voice,he may not be the best singer but he is undeniably the most passionate.Listen to a live Sunday Bloody Sunday and not be touched by the raw sorrow his voice carries.

Well said however don't put the Killers in that group. Brandon Flowers is a very good singer.

As with any band that's been around "forever", it's kinda easy to get sick of them. One can only listen to so much of one band before they tire of them. (One good example of this is Queen.)
Because they have been around that long they have a fair bit of popularity, their really good songs are over played! (Again...Queen!)
Any band is bound to have good albums and bad ones. That goes without saying.
At the moment I like U2.
Ask me in a month and that may change.
But eventually I'll make the circle back to them again.

If you are trying to say he doesn't have a good voice, clearly you haven't heard him live.

I was at the Melbourne Concert and he would be in my top 2 or 3 all time top voices.

Spot on. Especially remember when he launched into Pavarotti's part of Miss Sarajevo, was really taken back by how good his voice actually is.

And to all those comparing U2 to Spice Girls, once Spice Girls release a series of great albums over a 30 year period and still manage to sell out concerts within minutes then you have a right to make that comparison.

Couldnt have said it better!
