Rate our list, identify list needs.

Rate our list, indentify list needs.

Hawks recruiters do it as follows - rate players from 1 -5. 1 being the best 5 the worst. 4 is seperated into 4a and 4b. 4a is fresh debutants in the early stages of career and 4b (trapdoor) players on signifcant decline.

Also identify list needs. Do we need more tall forwards for example. Are we short a rating 1 backman?

Could also put an * next to prospective premiership players and a # next to possible.

We should bump the list this time next year and see what has changed. Where we have improved or regressed.

Enjoy.

List Needs

1 Midsized genuine defender rated 3 or higher
1 Ruckman
1 Tall Forward rated 2 or higher (step up jacky boy!)
2-3 of our mids need to step up to 1, foley took a step back this year from 1 to 2 in my opinion, tuck is borderline 1, cotchin could be a 1+++++ ;)

Underlined are players you missed.

Positives

Many of our players are possible and probably improvers due to their young age and experience. Found it hard to find absolute duds (5). Most guys who are low rankings are very young.

In the key forward department we have no rating ones but as a positive they are all young and could get to at least rating 2.

Depth in midfield
Key position depth in backline (although Polak inflates the figure)

Negatives

Obvious lack of depth in forward line, in both tall and small department.

Lack of a big high rating backman.

Relying on some of the plethora of mids to realy step up.

Match Winners are ageing - Brown and Richo are only real proven match winners.

Short a ruckman who is likely to fill Simmonds shoes.

Didn't see Collins in there so I added him to the small backs...

Of the 15 4a's I'd expect 6-10 to be rated as 2's and 3's by the end of next season, with Cotchin the likeliest to go to a 1 rating. Strong likelihood that at least 2-3 of the 3's will improve further to a 2.

List needs:

Ruckman, perhaps a specialist small defender with size and pace if we don't think a player like Collins or midfield overflow is going to eventually address this issue, more quality midfielders and ball carriers.

I don't really think there's a lack of depth (in terms of numbers) anywhere, but the ruck lacks depth on the quality front, arguably the small defender does also.

Most importantly, the stacked midfield section is going to yield players who spend most of their time forward or back and are only playing 20-40 minutes on the ball (or floating to contests while playing on a flank).

Throw Cotchin, Tambling and Connors into the small forward mix fairly permanently and it oozes class and capability.

You can do similar for the small defenders.

Beyond the KP's, ruck, and a couple of forward and back specialists, the rest of the side should be fit and hardened midfielders - capable of being rotated through the centre, but mostly played as a hard running rebounder, wing or a lead-up half forward delivering inside-50.

Summary
I know not many agree with me but I still believe that we need to target both a KP forward and defender in this years drafts. It doesn't have to be with pick 8, we can use 26 & 58 to get them or even add one through the rookie list if need be, but I definitely believe that getting them would really help out our list moving forward. I think this would allow us to move Moore into where I think he would play his best footy and that is a rebounding HBF.

I also believe that is we did this, it would also give us freedom regarding where we play Schulz, as I still believe he could be a very handy tall forward, but with Polak going down he is restricted to the backline unless there is no match up for him. With Richo moving up the ground in his roaming role I think we now have the perfect opportunity to play Schulz, Hughes and Riewoldt as tall forwards from the start of next year.

I believe we are going to have to bite the bullet and show some faith in Graham & Pattison as ruckmen and start giving them more responsibility. Simmonds is nearing 30 and wont be able to carry the load on his own forever, these 2 really need to step up and show that they can carry the load come 2010 and beyond.

As much as people like to suggest we have a pretty awesome midfield unit with Tuck, Foley, Deledio and Cotchin leading the way I think we are yet to see the last 3 really shine. I believe that they have a lot more improvement left in them. Deledio and Foley especially, they tend to still go missing for large parts of games and it shows. That is why I only gave them a 2 rating instead of a 1. Tuck became a much more consistent performer in the second half of the year and I believe he is our number 1 midfielder at the moment in part because the reasons mentioned above regarding Lids and Foley.

I believe that if we add another top line midfielder to this group with pick 8 in the draft we will have the makings of a great midfield come 2010, however there will still be a lot of improvement to reach the potential this group shows. Until then I still think we're a little skinny in terms of real class.

All in all I believe we are pretty close to where we want to be as we enter our window of opportunity. Just a bit of fine tuning in the next 2 drafts and we'll have a list that can take us places we used to only dream of.

The numbers are ok just a lot of our list is speculative. Our forward line does rely on some of the mids going through there. Not such a bad thing. Prevents small forwards drifting in and out of the game and mixes up the backline.

Small backs - Tambling could be recast. Raines could come good. JON 5000 might, Matt White may be valuable in the backline. Has played there before. He's a junk yard dog and will scrap, and provide run and carry. Anyway there are options.

Good thread...for when the list is finalised. So I'll leave my ratings until then. The one thing I will say is that I noticed a lot of people rated Riewoldt similar to Hughes. That suggestion is way off in my opinion.

Quite a few holes still in the list. We need a CHF and a CHB immediately. Tall order, literally. Our midfield is still 3 players short that possess genuine quality. We need 6-8 mids that can get the job done. We have 3 - Foley, Lids & Tuck. I had Cotchin at 3 as he's still pretty new and he should fill 1 spot in that void. Out of the rest i can only see White stepping up in the immediate future. The rest seem neither here nor there at the time being. If Edwards puts on a decent amount of weight, maybe.
Our small backs are good runners but average stoppers. It wouldn't surprise me if we pick up a utility with our 2nd pick. Teams these days need at least 1 good swingman and ours are both veterans.

We need one more class midfielder, that is tough/ clean with disposal/ and quick/hard running.

A Forward with the potential to kick regular bags and make the most of opportunities like a Fevola.

Lastly and when the midfield is right a ruck that will give us first use of the ball.

If Rance can come along our back line will be very good. Thursty, Moore and McGuane are very important to a possible premiership.

Lynch at 26 could be the man. 191 cm, quick and athletic. I also like Mat Broadbent. 190 tough mid half back with good skills. Ryan Shoenmakers would be handy but pretty sure he will be gone. Keen as mustard to get one of these guys if we don't take Vickery and Roughead is gone.
