So I'm laying on my couch and a see something quite sizable run down my hallway......much bigger than a mouse...rat basically

I need some ideas how to catch the little(big) fkr

War has been declared. ..

Rat baits in the roof cavity, garage, any holes in the walls. Seal up any gaps where they are getting into the main house. Fix any dripping taps or leaking pipes.

The baits make them thirsty, and they will generally leave the house to find water and die somewhere else. Much better than trapping them and having to dispose of the body.

be very careful this not the start of rat world domination. They might retaliate.

Gold. Yeah they are crafty little campaigners. I used to use peanut putter, but the current squad have been licking that off without setting the traps off.

Baits are always good, but a mate used them in his house and instead of going after water they all died in his roof cavity, which he only discovered after he noticed the stench.

I've heard of people using cotton to tie the bait to the traps, will try that next.

Tying the food to the trap is a good idea, as well as placing the food underneath.

But those feckers are very crafty.

We had trouble with rats, albeit outside, as we have a veggie patch. We went to a professional pest control company and bought some heavy duty bait, tied it in the middle of pvc tube as we had a dog that we did not want to kill. Apparently rats are smart, but they take this bait back to their camp and it warns the others. (there are always others)

Took about a week, but haven't had a rat for over a year, just saw the first one about a week ago, so put a couple more baits out, seen nothing since.

It was expensive, about $80 for a bucket of these baits, but so far have probably only used about $5 worth, so I think we have a supply for many years to come - worth every cent IMO.

Good luck, I hate nothing more than rats.

My cat snared a mouse yesterday, and ate everything except the stomach. I couldn't help myself, I dissected it to find it Choc full of bait. Smart cat to leave that shit alone! Been eating them for 12 years has probably worked out what makes him crook

TheLoris Are you sure it isn't a possum or any other native animal, like a water rat? I don't think you should be setting traps like that until you can actually ID what the animal actually is.

Who posts videos of themselves killing animals, seriously? I can understand hunters explaining what they actually do to educate others, but that was just a snuff film. How is that entertaining in any shape or form?

Some people are a spanner short of a toolset.

Sage advice from Sooz .. :drunk:
I don't understand why people say "get a cat". Having a pet out of nowhere is a lot of responsibility, it's not like you can just get one out of the blue. Plus some people are allergic to cats. Then there's the problem that some cats are either lazy and useless or get the job done, but leave a mess everywhere. Or worse, a half-alive animal for you to put down.

If you really wanted to get an animal to dispatch a rodent, you get something like a jack russell terrier.

No possums around where I live, but rats are quite common. I've had them in my backyard before, but managed to kill them with baits. Just haven't had them in my house.

Have got baits around the house so hopefully they start knocking those off, as long as they don't die in my roof cavity. Always prefer traps as you get a confirmed victim, never know with baits.

I'd never use baits outside, especially if there are native animals that could get to them. And do you know what kind of rats they are? This country has a large list of indigenous rodents.

But whatever traps you use, please do not get glue traps.

Soon to be dead rats.

In the metro area, so not much native wildlife about, just the neighbours cats, but I throw the baits under my deck and they seem to disappear
