Chris Yarran - Livewire, particularly in the opening 15 minutes. Good to see him snag a goal and lay 6 tackles. Allows us to put in a taller forward line, with him and Eddie ready to pounce.

Mark Austin - Didnt get alot of it but competed well. Good in one-on-one contests, and didnt get beaten by his opponent. Has good agression. Tried to knock Pav of his feet 3-4 times.

Hampson - Super leap, played OK up forward. Average disposal but great mobility and even pressure. Held on to a few which was nice.

Marc Murphy - Superstar. Great brakes. Enough said.

Cameron Cloke - Played like poo so probably wont be in the team next week.:)

Paul Bower- Beat Pav when he was in the forward line and run hard all day.

lol at the positives, the only positives were Yarran, and the usual suspects trying their hardest. While the passengers continue to magically disappear when the pressure is on.

  1. We are missing Grigg, Jacobs*, Carrazzo and Walker from our best side due to injury and yet still lost by only 7 points.
  2. We surrended a home state advantage to a team used to travel and yet still lost by only 7 points.
  3. We gave valuable experience to Yarran, Hampson and Austin and yet still lost by only 7 points.
  4. Robinson played with a mongrel determination in the twos and shall play next week.
  5. If St Kilda beat Collingwood today, we'll still be in the top eight.
  6. Our supporters will have some perspective and accordingly set realistic expectations for the rest of the season. This includes the media hyping us as favourites nearly every match.
  7. We still have 15 weeks to work on our deficiencies.

* I haven't included Warnock because he should at least play a few games for us before being regarded as a messianic ruckman, and for mine Sammy is way ahead of Hampson, Cloke and Setanta as backup to Kreuzer.

we don't deserve to be there

we don't deserve to be there

That may well be b_g but there are 8 other teams that don't either. For all the doom and gloom on this board, we really aren't that good but at the same time, we really aren't that bad. As I said about 'realistic expectations' if we play to our potential we may sneak into the 8. And, as I said, we have 15 weeks to fine tune stuff.

Last night was disappointing to watch, and that's two weeks in a row where we've looked disinterested, preferring to play catch up, and this whole lack of intensity and heart worries me.

I was pleased with the efforts last night from:-
Joseph - kept biting all night like a dog after a bone.
Hampson - athletic, determined, ran til the last siren and for a big man to get down around the ground like that, and to lay the tackles on was great. Will become our no.1 ruckman.
Armfield - having the balls to take a run and try to beat them, instead of just standing there and handballing.
Murphy - just getting better and better each game.
Bower - beats Franklin one week, Pav the next. Good example of someone who just busts a gut and does his job without fanfare and without centre stage attention.
Waite - we need two of him. I think he should stay forward. Play him were he hurts most.
Scotland - gritty, tought and showed heart.

I was disappointed in:
Fev.
Gibbs.
Cloke.
Our lack of defensive pressure and run.
Our lack of forward pressure and confidence to have a shot.

Can someone explain to me why Nick stevens and Marc Murphy were seen numerous times kicking the ball to a two on one/three on one contest in the forward 50 ??? Do we not have any other options up there??

Changes for next week should be interesting.

Hmm I must have been watching a different game to a couple of other posters, cause last night Hampson and Armfield were awful, simply awful and have to be dropped this week.

After this round, we should be sitting in the top 8, and teams above us include Port, Bombers & Brisbane.

If we're already in the top 8 a third of the way into the season, with those 3 teams above us, how can anyone really say we cannot make finals?

I would expect us to finish the year ahead of all those 3 teams, so if we aren't going to make finals this year, than a lot of team sitting outside the 8, and behind us need to start improving dramatically also.

Positives for me-
Kreuzer- i find this kid inspirational. we all knew our rucks had a low chance of winning all the hitouts coming up against sandilands, but kreuzer never gave up. His second, third etc efforts were brilliant. and that passage of play in the 2nd or 3rd quarter , where he ran from half back and just kept running , got the ball, passed it off, got the ball again etc and it resulted in a goal. absolute beauty :)
Armfield-showing why he should be in the team. his run and determination
bower- a great job on franklin followed up by a nice game on pavlich for some of the match.
Judd- lead by example
Murphy- great job
Gibbs- was everywhere in that 3rd quarter :) , i thought he had a great night. made one mistake where he kicked it a bit off, but i think nearly everyone made at least one mistake last night.
Hampson- may not have been outstanding , but he has improved some aspects of his game, his chasing and tackling, instead of pushing someone in the back , was one of the standout improvements.
Yarran- very happy with his game.. nice to see him get a goal.
Waite- nice game, down back and up forward, 3 goals in a quarter -

Austin can play CHB. Allows us to throw Waite forward.

That's a significant benefit.

Bower can play CHB. Has done so admirably the last fortnight. Jamison at FB, Austin third tall, Thornton medium tall/loose man, Waite up forward.

Would love to see the MC persist with that set-up. We have three talls after Fev who look like doing anything when up forward. Fisher has obvious deficiencies hence why he's not in the side. Kreuzer has shown his worth up forward but we need him in the ruck. Waite, while excellent down back, can be covered there and will be invaluable up forward.

Players like Murphy, Judd, Bower, Armfield, Joseph, Kruezer and scotland actually put the effort in! Its so frustrating to see some players actually put the effort in and play with some heart and then u get others that just dont even put the effort in... that what loses it for us. Fev was appauling last nyte... Whether he was injured or not he looked uninterested from the very start and was obviously inthe wrong mind set...

Hampson didn't have a huge match but he showed enough to give him another match. Disposal was average but chased very well, good tackling also. No matter who we played in the ruck would have struggled to get a hitout yesterday.

Yarran started off like a house on fire, positive signs just needs to be in the game a little more.

Austin did a few nice things i thought, perhaps needs to string a few together like Grigg did to get the confidence.

Cloke i'm disappointed in, just really seems to be lacking at the moment. Perhaps Hartlett could come in for him as he was excellent for the Ants yesterday i thought. One of Harts or Austin can have a crack at Cloke forward line position, got nothing to lose there i think.

Lock in Hampson for the rest of the year. I'd imagine he would have met any KPI's he would have had, and he did some nice things.

Not sure I agree on this. Trouble is up against Hightower it's too hard to really judge him.
