Where is all this stuff of $800 per game coming from? James may have talent, but not to the tune of $800 per game. Where is that figure coming from? Speculation or fact? For $800, I would have the expectation that a player commanding that sort of money would have at least some degree of AFL background. Let me see, I have $800 to spend on a player, James or Paxman, James or Paxman..... yeh James wins, get serious! Whilst both clubs have a bit of money at the moment, it would be better spent getting two ex VFL players rather than one from the RDFL. I have watched James play, and he is not a $800 player in the EDFL. There are a number of medium size defender in the EDFL that would carve him up!
Believe the dollars was closer to 400-450 than 800. But again, thats only rumour, more believable than 800.. Got my info from a source around the Riddell FC...

Ive been reading this site for a few weeks now. I do wonder where some of you blokes get your info from. For once and for all Meldrum is not playing at Macedon. He is playing again at Romsey.

Couple of things to throw into the mix.

Ben Talbot to Gisborne next year.
Steve Burlack to Romsey next year. (Apparently pretty close to Romsey Coach Kevin Fitzgerald.)
Kevin Fitzgerald will most likely coach again.

Majority of Romsey senior side will not leave the club. Infact unlikely there will be any major goings.

Well, this post has been blown out the window... A majority of the Romsey senior side is gone are they not??? Carroll, Meldrum, Morgan, Cox, Commerford.. Would be tipping that is a fair chunk of the side gone...

Even that is in my humble opinion over priced. Don't want to knock the player (James). He has some ability, and would get a kick. Realisticly, if I was recruiting for a club, would not go beyond the $150 - $200. For $450, I could pick up an ex SANFL or VFL player with senior experience.

Agree Deef, do think that it would be more like $250-$300 for James IMO though. But that would be a flat rate of say $200 and balance performance rated(Goals and Goal Assists). Would be pointless to get a player like him and play him anywhere but Full Forward, he has been tested in other positions and had nowhere near the influence he has now.

I dont know where the figure has come from, i was simply replying to a quote. I agree he is not an $800 player, but not many are!
But as far as medium sized defenders carving him up i dont think so. He is 5'10 playing key position. He is extremely quick, deceptively strong and rarely loses 1 on 1. In a stronger league he would be ideal as a half forward or even a pocket because he requires the oppositions best defender not 2nd or 3rd best. Give me some names of midsize defenders and i'll tell you how well they would stack up. Lets not also forget that James played CHB & FB in premiership sides at Sunbury before returning to Riddell and he humiliated Mick Werner in his last couple of years at Gisborne when he was kicking double figures every other week.

I think so. In a stronger league he would be playing on a flank, and would encounter players like Budge & Tate at Greenvale, both with VFL experience and good players. Tate tough, quick and Strong, Budge quick and very good overhead. Strathmore, Cant' think of the guys name, Italian, would counter him in all areas. Jarrod Morrison, lefty, quick strong gutsy, again with VFL experience. Keilor, start with David Opar. Young kid super quick, needs a bit more strength, but if he can cut Joe Misiti out of the game sure he could do the same with James. Kevin Witchello, if you want pace, did the 100 metres in just a tad under 11 seconds as a junior. Taller than James and strong. And if those guys failed, which they would not, throw Travis Gluschenko at him. Strong, quick, has done the 20 metre trial at Ess and Cannons at around .28 seconds is around 6'1", and has played on AFL players ranging from McGregor, to smaller guys like Cassissi when they were boderline AFL/SANFL. Don't really want to go on with other teams, have made my point. None of the above would be playing CHB, or FB.
Easy to say he does not lose a 1 on 1, but different standard of football and player.
I have not denied his talent. But it is relative. In a stronger league, he would not be the same dominating player, and not a player that I would pay mega bucks.

carrol has been in talks with sunbury lions and kyneton
morgan has apparently signed with keilor but a club in south aust flew him over there to talk about playing for them
meldrum has also been linked to keilor and gisborne but is waiting till wednesday as to where he is posted as a copper before he makes up his mind
cox has a bad back and cannot play footy again

Yeah all good players in their own right but it is too easy to just highlight their strengths and say they would destroy James. Once again you seem to have ignored the fact he was a key player in Sunburys premiership side/s playing as a CHB and FB against much bigger names and sized players. The way in which he demoralised Mick Werner also highlighted not only his class but his football nous.
How much have you seen of him Deefer? I too had my doubts but he just has so many strings to his bow. If you play him tight he simply breaks too quickly and no matter how quick you can sprint 20m it wont help when you've been pushed off balance and are giving up a 1m start. If you play him from 5m in front (ala Micky Martyn in his heyday) he will stand on your head. He has an awkward kicking action but his conversion is phenomenal.
I agree he would not be so dominating in a better league.
I agree he is not worth anywhere near $800, (but theres plenty of others who aren't who do get paid that amount).
But i strongly disagree that he would be carved up by medium sized defenders in EDFL!
By the way, out of all those players you mentioned how many of them could play FF, FB, CHB or HF and be more than competent in all of them?
Now that is the sort of player i would like to have in my team and i would be prepared to dish out a bit for it. Probably around the $400 mark...

Carrol would be good for both Kyneton & Sunbury but if he has any sense he would go to Sunbury becasue Kyneton will be weak again and the bigger grounds like Tony Clarke will suit him much better.
Meldrum would be good for either side but his ego might clash with the many other large ones at Gisborne.
But who is this club flying Morgan to SA? They must be crazy. He has all the tools but he is very much a wide receiver and not the type of player you would want to be paying too much. He would be a good player in a strong team but not vice-versa. Remember it was only a couple of years ago that he couldnt crack it in Gisbornes seniors because he didnt possess the hardness McGuane demanded.

i think you may be right about morgan about not liking it hard. I have since read on the rdfl forum that he has been on the gold coast and offered an assistant coaching role at some club and also a job in a local gym he has until xmas to let them know.looks like we will find out soon.

I have seen enough of him to suggest that he is a super player in an ordinary league and a probably good player in a lesser comp. You make various points about his ability, on the assumption the others are dumb footballers, and would not know how to play him. Yes he might have had a day out on Werner, but Werner was at the end of his career. Saw him play his last game at Keilor, ordinary. How many could play key position, three have, two at a much higher level. Which then poses the question.... how much have you seen of them if you have to pose the question?
I guess bottom line is you have your opinion, I have mine and they differ. Don't think either one will convince the other, so really do not see much value in continuing the debate. Only way it would be proved is to have James move to the EDFL, then we would see. But it won't happen. If you want to respond, will give you the pleasure of the last word.

Just some Facts on Lee James

He spoke to Greenvale several times. He was offered exactly what he was on in the RDFL and not one cracker more and the chance to play A grade Finals Footy.

He declined. End of story.

They are the facts

I cant believe some of the stuff that is coming out of your mouth Deefer, honestly it is a joke, in all honesty i would like to know exactly who you are because you sound like the greatest know it all moron going around.

Kevin Whicello is not as strong as Lee James, that is a stupid comment, i doubt you have ever seen Lee James up close or really see the bloke play footy.

Deefer why do you think the EDFL is such a superior league??? its streets behind the DVFL and doesnt even register on the radar with the EFL. And if you ever wanted to compare leagues like the O&M and GV to it most of the lads running around in Essendon would be out of there depth greatly.

I know i was trying to get Lee up to Tatura only a few weeks ago because i know he is a guy who has some fantastic football ability and i would think he could make a jump from Ballarat standard to the GV preety easily. He is very quick and very strong, has a great mark and a huge leap and for me a guy standing 184cm is a good height for either a FF or FP in local footy weather it be at GV level or EDFL level.

He has natural ability and thats something that any side can work with, of course the improvments can be made but he has the tools to work with and would take a jump in standard of footy fairly easily.

A quality person as well, he is commited to Riddel for this season but i would almsot be 100% sure he will move next year and if im still at Tatura i will be knocking down his door to get him to come up.

cheers

Said I would give you the last word, but not when you get personal. Now lets analyse what you said.
I have seen James play, and have stood next to him on a number of occassions. Have you done like wise with any of the players I have mentioned? If you are playing at Tat, how can you watch the EDFL/RDFL/DVFL etc and make a value judgement? My playing days are gone and I do travel around.
The comparison has never been EDFL versus any other comp but RDFL, so why introduce other leagues?
He is not at Ballarat standard. He is at RDFL standard. BFL was a few years back.
What is he 5'10" (178 cms) or 184? See your earlier post. Think he is closer 178. Big difference.
Have never denied he has ability. Just questioning the hype around the perceived status he has in some minds.
Never questioned his personal qualities. Accept your statement that he is a quality person. Have absolutely no reason to think otherwise.
Would not mind getting him to the club I am involved with. Sure he would add value, but not at some of the $'s being mentioned. That has been the crux of my logic.
I make my statements about the respective strengths of various clubs and comps, from first hand attendance at games. Can you say the same?
Welcome an open debate any time, but not when people have to resort to personal insult.
Again you may have the last word.

Deefer this year i missed football because of a chronic foot problem so i did get to see alot of footy as i have mates playing in alot of the leagues in Melbourne and Country.

Firstly the EDFL is not a fantastic league, its scrappy, conjested and not overly skillfull. Strathmoore and Greenvale are the obvious standounts and could hold them selves in most other leagues.

Lee James was a key player at Sunbury a few years back, possibly when the BFL was at a higher standard than present. He could go forward, back , take a grab and kick a goal, also the guy is lighting quick, saying he is not BFL standard is almost comedic.

You like many others have your own opinion on Lee but obviously people other than your self rate him very highly else he wouldnt have been chased by larger clubs in stringer leagues. I just cant see how you can possibly judge the guy the way you do for someone who sees alot of football. Its like saying Dean Lupson was a crap footballer because he was dirty?? it doesnt make sense.

cheers

Guys this is a thread for the rdfl not just 1 player lets forget about all the crap going on in this thread has anybody heard about centrals i've heard that they will be losing at least 6 senior players from this year

Has Lancefeild had anybody apply for the coaching job for next year

Read back a few pages - Tigers landed a coach. Formerly from Melton now resides in Heathcote I'm lead to believe (from a Lancefield source I work with)

Deefer (or is it duffer?). You were discussing James etc with me and i agreed to disagree after your last posting but then Tige19 made some further points (similar view to me) and you have become confused as to who you are arguing with.
For goodness sake at least look at who is posting the comments. I think its fair to say you've lost this argument, now lets move on!
