This shark culling thing has me shaking my head. What exactly is the argument for it? Has anyone met a person who supports it?

Barnett and Buswell are almost the definition of dodgy politicians.

Is that true?

Head shaking material.

Supporting might be the wrong word to use, but everyone I've met is at the very least happy that Barnett and Buswell aren't sitting on their bums sniffing chairs and snapping bras and doing nothing while people are getting eaten. They mightn't be happy with the methods but at the very least they're doing something.

All this from a town of pot smoking hippie environmentalists who by rights should be against it.

The anecdotal evidence is that there is a shitload more sharks hanging around down here than there has been, and I tell you what, that's true.

Head shaking material, in my opinion, is the people (oh, I've encountered a lot) who vocally oppose it, yet haven't been in the water this decade, aren't rushing off to protect crocodiles when they eat 12 year olds, and say that if they knew someone who died that they wouldn't want some action taken on the shark. That to me, is utterly ridiculous and something made up to support their point. How many of them would actually care if there wasn't something to like/share/comment on/retweet?

Can you enlighten me as to why these people think the cull will work?

I'm not an expert but I can't image killing some sharks will make any difference. There are a lot of sharks in the sea.

Most people don't think it's a cull for a start. The reasoning is that the ones that come close are the hungriest and largest, so they'll either take the bait and bugger off or have a feed and die. I'm not expert either, that was very simplified as I've had a few drinks.

Someone I know once thought it would be a good idea to have a minimum IQ to be able to legally have children.

There are a lot of people who think that. The funny irony is that they are the ones who wouldn't be allowed to conceive.

He really couldn't see that argument when I told him that. Proved his own point I guess.

I am against it in every way possible. You're more likely to die on your way to the beach than actually being eaten by a shark.

We're swimming in their domain. If you're scared, get a ******* pool and shut up.

Try telling someone to swim in a pool and stop surfing. It doesn't work because they don't compare.

Stop surfing. If you're scared of the consequences, then stop.

I'm not going to be a bank robber, then complain when I get arrested and then lobby government to cull police officers so that I feel more comfortable in what I choose to do.

Pretty average analogy.

I really hate weighing in on this topic because it's so divisive, so after this I'll say no more.

o_O There's a lot more people surfing than robbing banks and they'd be doing it mostly for enjoyment rather than personal gain, strange choice.

People feel that they shouldn't have to be scared of being eaten by a shark, but they're not willing to give up surfing because in the past they haven't felt threatened by sharks, unlike now. A lot of people use the ocean and this makes it safer, but if there's a better alternative then I'm sure most would be in favour of it.

One final thing though, someone who drives would be mad not to be scared of a car crash, right? But they're hardly going to stop driving.

You call my analogy crap, and then produce this? You can't get around Perth without driving. You can quite easily stop surfing if your fears are great enough.

I'm not calling it crap. It just doesn't fit this situation.

If you look at mine that way, driving for necessity, it's not comparable either, but if you look at it from the point of view of someone who drives solely for enjoyment then it is. They're probably not going to stop doing something they enjoy, which is popular, because they could die.

Many people are unwilling to stop going to the beach in whatever capacity, and they want to feel safer at the beach. Something has to happen.

In fact yes, they do. You often hear about people who stop playing a sport/doing whatever it is they do because 'one more hit to the head could be the end' etc etc.

It's beside the point though. As the human race, here were are attempting to play God, yet again.
