SAM LANDSBERGER assesses the top 10 VFL prospects for the national draft.

AHMED SAAD
Northern Bullants

Position: Small forward; AGE: 21; HEIGHT: 180cm; WEIGHT: 75kg
Similar to: Eddie Betts

In 27 games Saad has become one of the VFL’s elite. With impeccable balance, burst of pace, strong hands and a knack of finding goals he is hot on Kevin Sheedy’s watch list.

Coach Darren Harris: “He’s one that has to be looked at because we’ve seen the effect of small forwards and every club needs them. He needed to improve getting outside 50 and applying pressure and he’s doing that.”

Patrick rose from port melbourne is an even better small forward, might want to take him instead.

Didn't read the article, but Saad will probably be heading to GWS I'd imagine. He's a good player though, no doubt.

As I said earlier this year I hope we give Wheeler a chance. Can when the hard ball and a good taclker and loves a goal.

Mohr sounds like a good one to look out for as well.

Duscher for me , can play mid and also as a forward , very balanced rounded player , good skills on either side and can take a good contested mark .
Would be a significant up grade on all of our smalls within contested footy, bar possibly Foley , and wouldn't be far behind him and would have him covered in skills , forward work and contested marking !

reckon we should look and recruit strongly from wafl, sanfl and vfl side to complement our young side.

looking for:
inside mids
ruck
small forward
defenders

What does everyone think about Nick Carnell? I think he could be a possibility for the rookie list at least. He's around 23 and a fairly good size for an inside midfielder.

I'm suprised we haven't had a look at him before (I dont think) with permission to train with Richmond? Perhaps they see something I don't see.

Thoughts?

Just read this article on the Herald Sun website. Surprised that out of all the players highlighted, the OP picked out a small forward...

I like the sound of Mangan, Mohr and Wheeler based on the short write up they each received in the article, but would have to watch a bit more VFL before I could really pass an accurate judgement.

You would assume recycled players are going to be late round or rookie draft selections. We have plenty currently that wouldn't be missed if delisted, so we should be able to clear enough room to give a couple a chance, you would think.

SAAD is the first player listed in the article, he wasn't picked out...

Every time I see Carnell play, I think 'We could do so much worse.'

If we had the chance to get Saad then we would. The next best would be Wheeler, considering he's in our VFL team we would know him a bit more. Should also consider Stockdale for depth down back or he could surpass some of our players, Gibson to replace Tuck and Batsanis to replace Nahas or Edwards.

IMO may not be quick and clean enough at AFL , Willie Wheeler IMO may also be the same , shows some potential as a tricky small forward , both are certainly alot better than other small / medium listed players we have !
I have no issue bringing in players from SANFL , VFL or WAFL , however they must , IMO , be only listed to fit a need, be well rounded and at the expense of fringe one dimensial players.

what about looking into Tim Mohr, he is the best key position backman in the VFL, be crazy to overlook him, 195cm and 98kg, so AFL ready.

Yeah, I agree. This guy goes in HARD all the time. Everytime I see him play and compare him to the Richmond players, he's generally better than most of them. His skills generally aren't too bad. He's not what you'd call quick, but he's got good speed for his stocky sort of size.

I reckon he'd be well worth the punt.

Like you said GldGoldy, Mohr would have to be looked at too.

Reminds a bit of Foley, but not as quick. His lack of pace does worry me.
Put it this way...I have doubt that Macdonald willplay a senior game and we gave up pick 50 for him so I can't see how picking Carnell with pick 70 or a rookie spot would be a complete disaster.

Willie Wheeler bound for AFL

THE story of Willie Wheeler is fast approaching its defining chapter.

Will the Victorian Football League sensation from Avenel, near Seymour, be drafted?

Wheeler has all the attributes to play AFL footy. He's 19, explosive off the mark, tackles hard wins his own ball, and can kick goals.

He showcased his talents playing for the Murray Bushrangers last year, collecting 41 touches and laying seven tackles in a breakout match against Bendigo.

Pretty good article/interview here:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/willie-wheeler-bound-for-afl/story-fn53khop-1226096860330

I didn't realize he was 176cm, He doesn't look that short when he is out there.

I thought he looked small but not 176cm... We could do alot worse IMO.

He is an inside mid who can kick a goal. He is slight though and gets too easily pushed of the ball. His skills can be a bit iffy asweel IMO.

Definantly worth a rookie pick IMO, a footballer not an Athlete which I like.

Needs to put on size through the core.

Many on here complain about the size of our players (Nason, Nahas, Edwards, Webberley, Hicks). What does Wheeler have to provide that these guys dont? Arent our small bodied players already constantly getting best-on for Coburg? Im all for giving the kid a chance, but you cant just pick him up because hes performing consistently... we need to take into account what weve already got, and the time we have invested into developing those players.

Isn't Gourdis the best key defender in the VFL??????? So everyone says!!
Not when he's giving the umpire the bird (and costing his team a 50m penalty in the process!) :D

I don't generally watch much of the VFL (will have to start), but he had a pretty ordinary game on Saturday and some are saying he's a potential delistee come years end (not based on Saturday's game, of course). And here I was thinking he might be part of the future...

Wheeler is a really good prospect, clears it effectively, can kick goals, really worth looking at. He tied with Shaun Atley for best a Murray U/18, can't believe no one gave him a go

Carnell too is a good prospect, would add a lot of fight to the tigers side, as he does most weeks at Coburg. Has his 100th for Coburg in a few weeks, and has been pretty good all year

VFL players should always be considered i reckon, if they're constantly matching it or bettering the AFL players at their level, it should be a good indicator they deserve a crack at the big time

The vfl will not help us much look at miller browne webberley all look good at the level but r crap afl players so many other examples so i hope we dont load up on these vfl spuds through desperation.

why would we be geting more small plays we need big strong men with c..t in them mangan sounds right same with mohr plays who dont give up and fight big big big
