And prematurely at that. :thumbsu:

That was a Graham Cornes/Robert Shaw-era away game.

- Don't play particularly well, but find ourselves up by a sizeable margin during the third quarter.

- Stop completely while the opposition pile on goal after goal.

- Reawaken about 10 minutes too late, shank a goal and stem the tide.

- In the neck and neck war of attrition that transpires as the final quarter drags on we blink first and go down by anything from 1 to 4 goals.

An accurate summary of how we are playing - sadly. :(

Even if Sydney win all their games, and we lose ours, we would have to be belted, and the Swans would have to belt the opposition. The best they can hope for is equal wins, but our % will hold top 2.

Not quite true.

Fremantle - St Kilda and Melbourne are still a chance dependent on their games today and tommorow. Sydney can not go any higher than 3rd now.

Our position is more precarious than yours due to % - however a win tomorrow and we are guarenteed a top 2 position.

don't take the top two spot as a given.

tell me how, mathematically, sydney can't get 2nd?[/quote]
A Simple Explanation for you.
For Sydney to get 2nd they have to win 15 games and have better percentage than Adelaide and Adelaide must lose all games. With 2 games to play and Sydney having won 12 games, they can only win 14 games if they win both. So Mathematically they can't get 2nd.

Have you looked at a premiership table lately?? We are 3 wins ahead with 2 to play!!

That now wont be an issue but the comfort of having 2nd place secured is vastly overshadowed by the fact we are likely to go into the finals in losing form.

Yes, can't lose top two spot now even if Mebourne will all their last three (unless they win each by some 15 goals and we lose the last two by 15 goals) but the bigger issue is our form. Hopefully, the showdown will give us the focus and form we need. Not good having sown up you finals berth and top two berth and just coast into the finals - it ain't a switch you can just turn on.

Look no further than Collingwood in 2002. Going into the finals they had a period of **** form, then they nearly won the whole lot.

All it takes is one good game to regain form, but the Bassett, Heart, McLeod, Johncock and Burton type defence/rebound you had earlier on in the year needs to be found again. One missing is fine, but one missing plus a couple underdone/injured makes it a lot harder.
