Before we get ahead of ourselves.

3 wins against 3 bottom 8 sides.

Although promising and fantastic to get off to a good start, lets not get to excited.

Spot on, REdge. Fact is, you can only play who you play, but I won't be even remotely sure about anything for us until halfway through the season, although if we beat the Doggies in Round 6, then that'll be interesting.

Reality is we are playing at a level we haven't reached in years.

Of course anything can happen from here as we've seen before so I'm sure nobody will be talking flags in April.

****, we're not Carlton supporters. :)

Lol Sydney and Adelaide will be in the top 8 come September. Every year they are ruled out...every year they make it.

We did what a very good team would do to West Coast today. Last year we would have let them back into it and cruised to an 8 goal win. But we kept the pressure up till the end and should have won by over 100 points.

So you reckon if we're 5-0 and a % of 150 we still dont know where we are?

Round 6 is looming as a pretty important match.

No doubt the real test will come against teams like Geelong, Hawthorn, Bulldogs and, dare I say it, Carlton.

However it's still hard not to be impressed with our performances so far. We're still keeping up that defensive pressure that Lyon brought to the club initially but we've now added a more attacking edge to our game as well.

Let's just hope we can keep it going and stay injury free, I honestly think with the way we are playing at the moment we can test anyone.

Nah, I'm not holding back.

We played very good football so far and were simply phantastic today !

You can only beat who you play :

1. We beat Sydney - the team that is responsible for our worst loss in recent years. The final score does not represent our dominance, they were never in it and we should have won by ten goals. Sydney then went on to beat Hawthorn last week !

2. We beat Adelaide at Aami - a place where we were the worst in the AFL. Adelaide never had a chance, we were clearly the better team. Adelaide had beaten highly fancied Collingwood the week before.

3. We beat West Coast - the team that had won five of the last six against us before this weekend. They have easily beaten Port last week and we smashed them today. If it weren't for some very dodgy umpiring and holding back in the second half, they could not have complained had we beaten them by far more than just 97 points.

Yes, it's early in the year and you don't win the flag in April. But you win confidence, respect and fear in the eyes of your opposition.

I for myself am thrilled - why not ride the wave while it's there ?!

maybe (or if history repeats itself - likely)

but I like to party when I can - and it's party time now !

:D

There are no passengers this year - very encouraging. Mini and CJ are going well. Gears is improving each week - although doesn't quite seem to have the belief yet that he belongs (the goal last week and this week should help).

The move of Dal and Monty back to elite level (up with Roo, BJ and Sam F) are welcomed, along with the partnerships of Gardi & King and Milne & Schneider. And Kosi is kicking straight (the curse of Johnny Barker has been exorcised!).

The first two wins came with quite moderate contributions from BJ and Roo - a good sign if they don't play that well and we have solid wins.

The problem for me is that the back-up talls are not exactly belting on the door of the 22, although Max will return in due course (hopefully Goose too). Gilbo is in top form which ensures we don't look at all exposed down back. Smalls seem in good shape with Eddy, X, and Leigh Fish all showing some form in the pre-season. Hope Armo, Jack and Lynch (at least) make the grade - plenty of time for them.

Only caught the King one out the corner of the eye, but seeing Hanson bounce up like a Dennis Commetti "cork in the ocean" makes me think there isn't much in it.

Worried about Kosi - that was late.

anybody got any calls on the reports as i had no coverage.

They all looked pretty minor to me. Kosi's was for a little ruffle of the hair to one of the Eagles defenders, Dal's was for wrestling  and King's was nothing more than a short armed brush off to Hansen (who should have got a nomination for best actor Oscar).

All typical umpiring over reactions. I'd be very surprised if any of them got suspended, probably just fines or demerit points at most.

It's early days.. tho i agree with Arm2Roo, Sydney and Adelaide always do surprise and make top 8,
it was a great win in the first round (13th all time for 1st QTR comeback's in our history)
and the AAMI win was fantastic, great win for those lucky enough to be there
today, game was over at half time and both sides pressure drop off afer the long change...
real test will be R6 against the Dogs, going to be a great game..

Could ultimately care less about who we played, the fact that we seem sharper and harder than last year when other sides are finding their feet and "geling" is a good enough sign that we are, in the very least improving in areas and locales we needed to.

Could not agree more 'Flyboy', how good is it that this year we cannot wait to play one of the powerhouse teams to see where we are at. This time last year we were shit scared to play them. IMO if we had played either the cats, hawks, dogs or power that we would have beaten or at least been bloody close to winning all. Add to that the thought that we have players chomping at the bit to join the party and hurt oppositions with our new found tackling pressure brings a new found confidence to me. I can't wait to play them, wish we had played at least one already.

Was a good win today no doubt. If we didn't win by 15 goals then something is wrong.

In saying that I wasn't that impressed with alot of our ball movement. Missed a lot of targets and just seemed content to bash it long and use our strength/guns to win the ball. If ppl think todays style of game post half time will beat the Cats then you are deluded. Still was good to get the %.

Also next week should be pencilled in. But we never beat Port at Port so forget the Dogs for now!

i am going to support saints for the flag since we don't really have a chance this year, unless we play you guys in the finals, which seems pretty unlikely.

Adelaide WILL make the 8. Wouldn't surprise me if Sydney somehow snuck in too either.

But yeah of course it's verrrrry early days yet.

I think the having the game pretty much sewn up by half time and then proceeded to win the next 2 quarters while not playing at such a level was what was promising as old habits would dictate that we'd have lost both quarters and walked away with a 20 odd point victory. As with anything there is still room for improvement in all areas, but that we are thus far improving on immediate issues (forward line pressure, goal conversion, pressure without the pill) kicking efficiency and ball movement should improve as fitness & confidence improves. But more than anything, they seemed hungry initially when the game was there to be won.

Reality being what it is now, you can't be entirely negative in how the wins have come about, but at the same time you can't be complacent.

!

Shit I was! If we can keep up that midfield pressure, we're gonna be tough for anyone to beat. Our movement was good because we were willing to take risks in order to move it up the ground faster, rather than pause and slow things down. In the past we have been too hesitant to play on and it doesn't usually get results.

i think we would've beaten a powerhouse any of the first 3 weeks with the pressure. only trouble round 1 & 2 was converting the midfield pressure into scoreboard pressure.

LETS KEEP A LID ON THIS GUYS...Its true, were playing better footy than we ever did. Finally Lyons, high pressure hard tackling game plan is starting to pay off.
Number 1 in tackles, Number 1 in defence! And were doing it with out Hudgeton our number 1 full back.
What a testament to Ross Lyon / Silvani and the rest of the coaches!
But in reallity its a really long season...

I must have watched a different game ! I nearly had tears in my eyes at times such was I impressed with our ball movement. A true team effort, almost "geelongesque".

If ppl think todays style of game post half time will beat the Cats then you are deluded.

We were up by 70 points at half time (the bookies were not accepting any bets any more) so who cares about the second half. Unlike the Sydney game, we also won those two quarters and ended up with a very impressive score.

Why didn't you mention the first half (especially the second quarter) ? That was pretty impressive, wasn't it ? Maybe even good enough to beat Geelong ?

Why so bloody negative ?

St Kilda was phantastic yesterday ! Dare to admit it and be happy about it !

But we never beat Port at Port so forget the Dogs for now!

If we can keep the intensity and team work, we should beat Port, the Bulldogs and Collingwood.

If we don't, we may even struggle against Fremantle.

I don't want a lid, I want to see St Kilda continue performing as they did so far this season. I am loving it !

The Saints Are coming The Saints are coming!:thumbsu::thumbsu::) Great win yesterday guys! early days as you say, but if this pressure and agro your displaying continues..the flag is not a pipe dream but a reality..totally enjoyed watching you blokes tackle great footy.:thumbsu: Hopefully us Hawkers can display some of that against the Roos today.
