Here is my summation of our recent draft picks. Drafting is a difficult job but absolutely vital to the success of a footy club. W=win J=Jury still out F=fail
After each F or J I have listed alternative picks. No recruiter can get 100% success.

I think our recent drafting performance has been excellent. However 01 and 02 was questionable at best. This years draft is a beauty and we need to hope we continue our success. One criticism I have of our drafting is that we havent taken any local players. We were primed to take Mclean instead of bradley several years ago but Melbourne thwarted our ambition on that one.

I still think watson was/is a win, he has provided some ball getting ability this year and when he decides to kick a little more often then he will start to become more damaging. The other part he needs to learn is defending his man, hopefully this is a learning curve and his education goes into hyper speed to more he plays. he is doing very well for a 40th selection and yes i know that was father son.

2001 was a terrible draft for us they should have traded one player to get inside that top 10, any club would have given us a top 10 selction for gary moorcroft, heneman or bolton such was the status of the essendon players at that stage.

2002 was ok at best would have liked schammer i dont winderlich is much chop, just because u have pace doesn't gurantee you of being a great footballer, sam mitchell has a lot to say to that.

I was just looking at that the other day...2000 wasn;t much better than '01

2000
17, James Davies
27, Ted Richards
32, Sam Hunt
47, Jordan Bannister
63, Marc Bullen
74, Michael Davis

uhh!!

I remember being so hopeful about James Davies after all the controversy - but then nothing. Shane Harvey stills bothers me the most...rubbish!

But like you foj1 - Im happy with the last two years.

We're definitely feeling the effects at the moment of our 2000-2002 drafting run.

2000
17, James Davies - delisted (Kerr at 18)
27, Ted Richards - asked to leave, traded (Mcphee at 39)
32, Sam Hunt - delisted (Hyde at 40)

Is anyone else still laughing that Sydney gave us a first round pick for Ted Richards? I am, so I'll say that he was a win for us.

I anticipate we will finish lower than I originally thought with the news about Lloyd's injury. If that is the case then this years draft will be critical. Essendon has a reputation for drafting the best player available for our first round draft pick. Do we stick with that or focus on obtaining another quick onballer?

Another quick onballer...not so much a ball carrier, but an in n under player in the mould of a Daniel Cross...in saying that, if we can release Lovett-Murray and McPhee permanently into the midfield/wing...another half back would be nice also. We could be looking at Shane Birss or Farren Ray from the doggies...they might be getting itchy feet by this stage with difficulties getting into the seniors!

The core of our current problem , the drafts from 99 to 2001 havnt yeilded enough consistant players of AFL level. Thankfully the last 3 drafts have seen us get some good players .
