For the last few months I've been playing Super Mario 64 for the N64 (yep, I'm up with the latest releases all right) but although I love the whole exploring worlds and working out the challenges etc, the jumping challenges and levels where one wrong move off a cliff might undo the last 10 minutes work drives me absolutely batshit insane.

There a few N64 games in a similar genre I've heard good things about - the Zelda series, Banjo Kazooie etc but do they also have the same reliance on frustrating jumping challenges?

Goldeneye is the perfect example of what I'm after but I actually played that back in the day so it's played out.

Would appreciate any and all comments!

I meant as in N64 games, sorry.

Good luck finding any mate, let alone having anybody recommened them. Cash Converters, Trading Post and Ebay are about your only choices!

If you loved Goldeneye, check out Perfect Dark, it's spiritual successor. Wish I never sold my N64 stuff....

Oh Ebay is good for buying them. I'm just I guess trying to scope out games people may have played in the past that I can then buy down the track.

There's a good second-hand games store about 10 mins from my place too.

You can't go past the Mortal Kombat & James Bond games. Mario Kart was great fun as was the Zelda gams

I still have my N64 stored somewhere. But the only problem with the N64 is that the controllers deteriorate easily and it won't be long before you need to buy a new one ( and as far as I'm aware they don't make N64 controllers anymore.)

My N64 controllers are fine. Just don't be rough with the anologue stick. PS2 controllers are far more brittle in my experience.

N64 is my favorite console because I love platformers, my favortie games are:
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (my fav of all time)
- Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mark (both action/adventure games more about puzzle solving then jumping problems)
- Goldeneye 007
- Perfect Dark
- Super Mario 64
- Banjo Kazooie + Banjo Tooie (platformers)
- WWF No Mercy (best wrestling game ever)
- Donkey Kong 64 (platformer)
- Conker's Bad Fur Day - funny platformer
- Mario Kart
- Mario Tennis
- Lylat Wars (also known as Starfox 64 - a scrolling shooter. I.e. you fly a space ship/plane thing and shoot things)
- Pokemon Snap (very underrated game. Sure it was a cash grabbing game to cash in on pokemon but still a very good unique game based on taking photos).

Lenny, if you've got a reasonable pc you could try emulation instead of having to actually track down the cartridges on ebay. I downloaded Project 64 for my nephews after their N64 crapped itself.

The game roms are floating around on the internet and the vast majority of them seem to work as well as a real N64. I actually ended up playing around with a few of the games myself. Destruction Derby 64 is probably the best game I've played. A hell of a lot of fun. :thumbsu:

Most of the games actually look better on the emulator as they can run at better resolutions and on computer monitors that are most likely better than your average mid-late 90s tv that you played the hell out of the 64 on.

How do you go with a controller though? I don't think I've seen a PC controller with the button on the back (the Z button on the N64)?

You use the keyboard.

X = A
Z = B
Arrow keys = Up, Down, Left, Right.
C Up = Home
C Down = End
C Left = Delete
C Right = Pg Down

You can of course change the keys.

Also with Project 64, the makes have been working on a new model which allows you to play online against other people across the world. This won't be out for a while though.

I believe there are adapters to connect your N64 controller to your pc, but I didn't bother with that solution. I bought a Logitech Joypad from JB Hi-Fi for about $27 (http://trgovina.partners.si/images/LOG5316.jpg). It's fairly sturdy and is basically a complete and utter rip off of a Playstation controller (there's also a wireless version available for about $60). You can allow for it's use in the Project 64 options area.

Edit: As for the 'Z' button, I use 'R2' (in Playstation speak), but you can configure the buttons any way you like.
