Recruiting Targets Summary

Would like to keep O'Shea as he is contracted and I rate him highly. But pick 21 would be what we'd want which you wouldn't agree with.
As for Butcher take him for your pick 56 and have fun.

i actually think OShea is probably worth pick 21 but i agree i dont think our club would part with pick 21 alone for OShea

would you look at someone like siposs or simpkin in conjunction with say a pick 56 for butcher? siposs is smaller and given you have some great talls coming through in mason shaw and mitch harvey, you have height covered, siposs could be that third tall swingman depth who can play HBF or HFF with an elite kick

the knock on siposs has been his tank but i think burgess could work wonders on that ;-)

hi guys, sorry to intrude but i'm wondering what the deal is with butcher and oshea? ...
O'Shea is a good grab if you get the chance. Mature player, yet young at 22. 58 AFL games. 12 games this year but locked himself into our top 22 in the latter part of the year after fighting his way out of the reserves.
Butcher is offered as 'sold as seen'. Is a strip down and rebuild project, one that was beyond us.

hehehehe in all seriousness though, what player would you be looking at for him/or a ball park pick?

If we could get a 2nd rounder for Butcher i'd take it.

whats the price on each of their heads if they are on the trade table?

i think butcher is probably gettable, OShea less so given the end of his year
Both worth more to us than in a trade.
If O'Shea keeps developing at the same rate then he is about 2 seasons away from being worth quite a bit.

Butcher is probably boom or bust with no in between, due to his never ending bad luck with injuries.

Not debating that.
Pittard and Youngy off limits.

i would agree with Pittard, but Youngy isn't on the same level as Pittard. Young has serious troubles long term getting a spot in front of Boak, Gray, Wines, Ebert, Hartlett, Wingard, Polec and White. Cornes is really his spot in the midfield rotations but he'll be in a dog fight with Amon, Newton, Moore, Colquhoun. Young played 14 games this year, if we can get away with selling a depth player i have no worries there. Youngy wasn't even an emergency this finals series.

For mine players like Pittard and Impey should be off limits.

Would have said yes to Siposs in the Primus era but not now.

I rate Young very highly, he's a monster for a 21 year old. Young might find it hard to crack a spot. But as soon as there an injury to 1 of our mids I reckon he's 1st in.

There is no way we will be trading O'Shea, Newton & Young in the one off season. Thats one way to lose your depth and go backwards.

Butcher for your No. 1 Draft Pick??
I think that's pretty fair

Edit - Pick #38
I interpreted this article to mean that Butcher is unlikely to be traded. Not saying I agree or disagree. Just sayin'

"Hinkley last night reaffirmed his commitment to young key forward John Butcher...“I am happy with how John developed in the second half of the season,” Hinkley said. “I’m patient with blokes like that.”"

losing one will be a necessary evil but i don't see a world where we lose 2 or more. one player will be used to generate value or a pick for the Ryder trade and if Lowden were to come through that would be settled with picks only.

I am not so sure about that. IMO he has been ahead of Moore, and only missed out on the final series as he was carrying an injury, not worth the risk of playing him in the finals when we had similar players that were fit. ... He is into surgery now and will be Mickey Mouse for 2015 ... Grief! He is still only 21!!! SOOO much upside & potential, with heaps of time to become a permanent midfielder.

Agree. I can see Young replacing Kornes sometime next year.

Also Stewie and Clurey can easily take O'Shea's place if the was traded to Saint Kilda (as they are both the same size as O'Shea) ...

also recently O'Shea bought a house in Melbourne and their is talk that Richo likes him so a trade for the Saints pick 21 would be possible especially if we loose our pick 16 to Essendon for Ryder

As Oscar Wilde said To lose one young player is unfortunate, to lose two looks like carelessness. And to lose three is a **** up by your list manager.

Or something like that anyway.

Yep - list manager for University in the VFL 1892.

the safest one would be Youngy .....

O'Shea is linked to the Saints which could get us pick 21 - in the 2nd round (and he could be covered by Stewie / Clurey)
Newton is linked to the Cats which could get us pick 33 - in the 2nd round (and could be covered by Youngy / Amon)

Hate to lose O'Shea. If he can fix his tackling, added to his speed, fitness and intercept marking he is going to be a VERY good player.

oshea is already a very good player. is elite in the intercept marking category. gives a great deal of run. can defend. just lacks in a couple of areas and while if he had those sorted it would be nice , but we would also be talking about an all australian if he had the other areas of his game up to the level we want.

i said from day one in the pre-season when it seemed he had a minor injury that was holding him back , and it appears he has gone for a minor surgery/clean out that he did have a minor thing holding him back slightly this year.

is still very young. is only going to get better. very important in our game the way him and pittard seem to gang up on teams and i think a lot of our great movement starts with those two in our backlines.

contracted. i wouldnt trade oshea for front row seats at a fabled hawkins/grande scissor session. too important and too much to come from this kid.
